Is there a faction that has a warcaster that can get into and survive in hand-to-hand?

Ehh... sort of, not really. I mean any caster you can to about 15+/21+ can probably survive a round in contact with moderate-above average melee threat say a run of the mill P+S 18 heavy. A few others can pop their feats to basically be invulerable for a turn, Saeyrn & Terminus come to mind immediately. However no caster in the game is really going to be able to consistently take a pounding from the likes of a Collosal, a Bronzeback, Mulg, The Avatar, Butcher etc... and expect to walk away. For the most part casters want to kill the heck out whatever they engage and then assuming it hasn't won them the game either sprint, teleport out of the way or get re-screened.

in a game defined by the mantra that everything can be brought down by something else, then no, im afraid not. there are some insanely hard nuts to bring down - Butcher, Borka, with IF and caming/transfers, Terminus, eSkarre, or McBain on feat turn, but everything can be brought to heel with the application of axe to face. nothing is invulnerable in this game.

Just for clarity's sake- McBain can't effect himself with his feat. It's restricted to non-warcaster models. What makes him difficult to kill is the same thing that makes trolls in general hard to kill the Tough special rule.

There are some that like mixing it up, such as butcher, but it's generally advisable to have a plan to get them out of there as something out there can kill them.

Whatever caster you have, there is something that can kill it. An enraged bronzeback Titan, the Avatar on 4 focus, any heavy with the right buff, and even the toughest of casters can be brought low. Even an unbuffed heavy can, with some lucky rolls, take out the heaviest of casters, and if your caster is concentrating on pure survival, he's not buffing the rest of your army.
That said, some (as mentioned pButcher, Karchev, feora, terminus and others, every faction has a few) can be made extremely tough, which makes playing them close to the front much easier - you still have to be mindful of the threats to them, however, and try to keep charge lanes to them blocked off, but you don't have to worry about that lucky boosted shot or CRA from killing them.

Casters are like the King in Chess, who also has the power of the Queen.
The Caster is almost never comitted to the fight until very late game as most units are capable of killing them.
And even if the caster is comitted it will usually be a game winning charge, or one which entails very little risk.

Speaking of late game charges. Had a friend who was running pgaspy against my mohsar. He kept hitting me with that wretched...I don't even remember the name of it, a sort of ranged magical attack. Anyways, I had a stalker jump him and do some damage before he died. After that, it was looking pretty bad for me, as even though pgaspy was near death, mohsar was in the same situation, only without the same sized army. I charged gaspy with mohsar, and actually managed to hit and wound. Mohsars corrosive weapon managed to kill the damned lich, regardless of his terrible CC skills. It was great.
