Hi guys, just ran out of my last of Delvan mud. Too many zombie, alas.

Anyone know a good substitute now that Delvan isn't produced? I heard the changed the formulae when they switched paint generations.

I collect:

Grand alliance death (whole alliance)

Stormcast eternals

Slaves to Darkness - currently Nurgle but may expand to undivided.

Agrax Earthshade. And is a precise match *that* critical when you paint zombies? really?

Well no, but I use it on a lot of things. Zombies just happen to be on my painting table at the moment. A precise match is not directly "needed" but if there is one or extremely close I'd like it. Especially if it is cheaper than Agrax (I would have to send 2 hours just to get to the game store, pick some up, and get home.)

Agrax is pretty close, although I have found myself using the new sepia one a bit more where I sometimes used Devlan, depends on the colour it's being applied to.

one of the things I heard was that Agrax dried to a more glossy finish like the old inks, instead of the matte of the washes.

Haven't had that issue myself yet, at least on pale blue, which was what I used it over most recently, from experience so far the finish on the new washes can depend on what colours you are using them over, and how much you apply. I haven't had any problems with overly glossy finishes when dry myself.

I've found in a pinch The Army Painter Warpaints Strong Tone works for Agrax Earthshade. They're a bit cheaper and come with more in them. I use them for airbrushing my Iron Warriors vehicles. The Dark Tone is also a good substitute for Badab Black, and way better than Nuln Oil.

40k Iron Warriors: 7500 points
Renegade Guard: 7000 points
30k Iron Warriors 9500 points

Super Wash D Brown by Coat d'Arms? That's an identical to Agrax. It's cheaper but bigger (18ml)

Vallejo makes a umber wash that is pretty close to delvan mud:

The Coat d'Arms wash is good as well. Though I like their super shader line better than their wash line.

I second the Army Painter. I ran out of Devlan Mud half way through my Skaven Clanrats and you can't even tell the difference between which ones were washed with which.

I'm a bit wary of the 'ink' descriptor - does it have the same flat matt finish as Devlan Mud?

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”
