Two questions came up in a recent game:
1) I charge a unit from behind that is in contact with a quad gun. Can the quad gun be fired on overwatch at the charging unit?
2) How close to an Aegis defense line does model need to be to claim the cover save? A unit was set up 8" behind the line, and claimed cover. At that far away, I would think the unit they are shooting at should also be able to claim it as intervening cover.
Thanks guys!

1. Not sure on exact wording, but I don't think there is a restriction on firing it in overwatch.
2. TLOS. If the model is 25+% obscured, it gets a cover save.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Yes, it can be fired on overwatch. It is, effectively, just another weapon that model is using.

1) As above
2) 25% obscured, just like all other cover besides Area terrain. I could be a bajillion inches away and still get cover, I could also be right next to it and not get cover. You need to see if it is blocking the view.

Interesting thing with ADLs...the cover works both ways with TLOS. The BRB may say "behind a barricade or wall" but makes no distinction from front or back. I had that come up recently and, by TLOS, my opponent's Sternguard got saves from my four plasma gun hits.

Thanks guys.
So my follow-up question is; how close do you need to be to the Aegis wall to get the cover save, but your opponent does not? Does at least one model need to touch the wall for the unit to fire over it without penalty? Or can you set up, say, 4" behind the wall, claim it as cover but say you can shoot over it at a unit 12" away?

Again, use True Line of Sight.
There is no set distance for this. Try it and see.

We cannot help you with this. Use TRUE line of sight - actually hunker down and see. Experiment a bit.

That's fine, thanks. I just wanted to know if I was missing something in the book that specified that a model needs to be X" away from a hedge to claim cover and still shoot over without penalty or something. I've got too many rule systems floating in my brain, I sometimes get them mixed up.
Thanks guys.

If a model is firing from right next to the wall, the unit they are firing at which is not right next to the wall would not be obscured from the model's actual eyeball view.
Imagine holding your gun in a thin window with your head in the window peering out. You could see a tank or monster in full unobstructed view until they were really close.
So the unit being fired at would usually not get a cover save from the Aegis Line unless the firing unit was not within say, 1" or 2" of the wall. We play it if you fire from within 2" of the wall, and the target unit is outside 2" of the wall, no cover save for the target; that reflects 'coherency' with the wall and works out to be quite fair.
