Subject: Tau or Eldar Flier?

Plummeting Black Templar Thunderhawk Pilot

Hopefully someone can help me out!
I am hoping/planing to get a flier for my Tau and Eldar (run them together) from Forge World but I dont know which flier to get.
Is the Tau Barracuda, Eldar Nightwing Interceptor, or the Eldar Pheonix Bomber better?

I don't know tau.
But Nightwings are cheap intercepters - couple of shuriken cannons and a couple of brighlances. The downside is if the pilot coughs it loses a hull point and it only has two. But it can evade like a ninja.
Phoenix Bomber gets 6x st5 ap3, 2 x str 8 ap2 and 6 str 6 ap6 shots. With Strafing run and also a good evade, with 3 hull points.
Both get vector dancer too (as well as tissue paper for armour)
I'm going to buy two nightwings to go with my phoenix.

Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives. |

Barracuda is pretty meh for the cost. more of an anti-ground assault craft than AA and it really doesnt put out the damage it needs for the points.
Pheonix is downright bad for the cost. flying bs5 pulse laser is nice, but av10 and only a 3+ jink is meh. 225 point cost is a relic from way back in apoc 1. cost shoud have been dropped.
Nightwing is crazy good. 145 points, good weapons, 2+ jink, and enough shots on its weapons to still do something at bs1. With vector dancer getting rear armor on other fliers is easy and mine have rarely ever died despite my enemies trying.
go with the nightwing. personally, i really dont like the look of the forgeworld ones so i converted mine from the razorwing.

Forget the Tau airforce for now, at least until they get a new flier.
The current ones are in the realm between "meh" and "who will pay for this?"
Donno about eldar though.

Phoenix is decent, but expensive; it's primarily a ground-attack aircraft, in this day and age the six small blast templates that ignore cover are actually fair weapons.
Nightwing is a fairly powerful cheap air-to-air vehicle; if you're getting any flyer at this point, it's probably the way to go.
Barracuda is cheap and has five S7 anti-aircraft-capable shots; it's by no means the best thing ever devised, but it's workable.
Also consider Remora drones; they have AA-capable Markerlights and you can get a lot of them. If you're facing lots of aircraft and have an absurd amount of money to blow on Forge World units taking a couple of Remoras and a couple of Barracudas is a decent way to deal with them, since AA-capable Markerlights synergize well with AA-capable Seeker Missiles and more Markerlights/Seeker Missiles is always a good thing for Tau.

I second this, Remora drones are awesome.

Have you people even read their stat-line in Imperial Armour Aeronautica? they cost freaking 110 points and all they got to fire is a markerlight, a range 36 burst cannon (S5AP5 assault3) and two seeker missiles.
No threat coming from this thing, not even to light aircraft.
There is no justification to bring this, even if you KNOW your enemy is bringing jets.
If it costed HALF of what it does today, THEN I would run a squad, and only for AA reasons.

You mean garbage. Remora drones have always been insanely overpriced, and when the Barracuda got a point drop to only slightly more than the cost of a Remora with massively better firepower it was the end of the Remora. There's no reason to ever use them in a game, just paint the pretty model and hope it gets better rules someday.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |
