Hey all! I once again turn to the collective insights and experience of the Community here because I find myself having a "dilemma".
I've got a Jump Pack Librarian and have run Mephiston to deadly effect (what fun he can be!)
But I was trying to determine if there was a good way to run one of the other non-Special Characters, like the Captain and the Chaplain.

I know the Chaplain has suffered a little in the way of AP4 on the Crozius, but that isn't a huge issue even if I happen to be fighting other MEQ armies as I guess I could always give him a Power Fist to handle anything in need of a S8 slap.

The Captain I know has a literal ton of options and available wargear, but is there a really good way to use him as a wrecking ball, but won't necessarily compromise his high Initiative? Of course a Thunder Hammer, Power Axe or Power Fist is the best way to get AP2 but slows him down considerably, whereas the Power Sword or Lightning Claws only stop at AP3.

Am I missing something? Anyone care to share some of the HQ's they've had good luck with?

Thanks!

Our most effcient HQ is the Libby. I prefer him on the bike so he can be where he needs to be. I run shield of sang and blood lance. However, most people love prescience, I'm sure someone is going to say how awesome it is.

Have you ever thought of giving meFEASTon his on Redeemer for extra extra lulz. I promise the look on your opponents face will be priceless.

You're right about the Infernus Pistol, I wasn't very specific I guess. I was leaning more towards melee uses. The Pistol is nice though with the BS5.

I've honestly never thought of putting Meph in a Redeemer...but I am now haha!
I'm not really opposed to a second Librarian, as I already run one with a Jump Pack and have used Prescience to bolster the accuracy of the x4 Plasmagun Honor Guard he runs with, but I'm not against using the Codex powers or the BRB powers either.

Anyone have any luck with Captains and/or Chaplains?

Thanks for the replies!

I've fought against a BA terminator chaplain. A lot.He's a right pain the a**.

Str 6 + I5 or so = the ability to hit monstrous creatures at initiaitve and hurt them. I play Eldar. Str6 = Instant death for me. The ap4 doesn't slow him down till you get to marines.
The guy I play who has B/A doesn't take daft choices, so there are probably more reasons this works too. I'm just the guy getting hit in the face with a crozius..

Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.

Captain in TDA with Lightning Claw and a Chainfist will run you 165 points. With dual close combat specialist weapons you will still get the +1 attack and will be able to either kill with AP3 Lightning Claw with reroll wounds or double stenghth AP2 armorbane chainfist. And you will a have a +2/+4 armor/inv save.

Tycho is a good buddy for the sternguard. He makes the squad quite lethal in HTH. I've had him punch 3 terminators to death before!

Mephiston is now a train wreck to me. Yes, he's really good against most meqs still, but teqs stop him cold. I'd still use him if he were an IC, but he isn't. So epistolaries it is!

What about running a regular Captain? Does anyone do that anymore? Lol

If so, what do you use and what are some units you use him in?

Thanks!

The regular captain unfortunately doesn't bring anything special to the table. A reclusiarch is better in nearly every situation. C:SM captains getting relic blades is pretty nice. We don't get them.

Unfortunately, in general, BA HQs kinda suck. It's why I buy cheap ones.

I think that statement can be extended to all armys, although with a huge generalisation (please don't provide examples of ones that don't, I'm well aware they exist).

I think a Reclusiarch or Librarian are the best options for BA HQ. Probably leaning towards the Librarian. Those divination powers are great, and so are the BA codex powers. Plus at 100pts you can't really go wrong. The captain, as has already been mentioned is rather pointless.

Focus less on the HQ, spend those points on things that will help BA shine (read priests).

That's good to know. I don't have super detailed knowledge of other armies' HQs. I think IG HQs can have heavy weapons though? Maybe?

Yeah the CCS is fantastic, but the other choices are pretty poor.

I've lost too many marine HQs to Nob powerclaws to consider them truly good.

Lol last game I played I snap shot a MG while my vets were falling back which happened to hit a Reclusiarch, who then failed his LOS and was instantly killed. Full wounds too. Couldn't help but laugh.

I like Librarians for marines. I know they're not as good as rune priests, but they're cheap and with some good rolls on the psychic tables you can get a really awesome force multiplier.

Eh, it makes more sense than shooting a unit and the guys at the back dying first.

No, I agree completely. In a battlefield with super deadly weapons, I guess it makes even more sense.

I usually go with a Reclusiarch with jump pack, no other options. It's a relatively cheap beatstick, that greatly multiplies the DC I always put him with - but will do very well with most other assault units too. I hear a lot about the usefulness of Librarians, but I find mine die all too quickly with no access to an Invuln save (and no, I will *NOT* let him cower at the back, this isn't IG dammit...)

Unfortunately there is no reason to take a Captain over virtually any other HQ. Unless that Captain happens to be Tycho, but that's another matter.

Unfortunately, the captain is by far the worst HQ in BA. He lacks the good options of a C:SM captain and adds nothing to your force other than a mediocre CC threat. Any other option is a better choice. With Librarian being the overall best of the generic hq's as they provide a decent defensive or offensive force multiplier effect depending on the powers chosen.
