But you need to see them coming before they charge, i.e., you must be in range to shoot them. But they move fast and will be able to bridge the gap between the two armies quickly, especially in pitched battles. In the other two scenarios, you might have two rounds of shooting, in pitched battles eventually only one round.
Gee if only sternguard had an option to put them near a target on turn 1...

It would take around 150 BS 4 poison shots to kill 3 units of 5 nurgle spawn. That is assuming they have no cover save and you roll average.

You know they can't hurt AV 12 right? A single dread or sentinel will tie them up all game, and costs much less than 540 points.
Hell something like a blood angels dread will rip them apart in a few turns.

Dark eldar will laugh and thank you for the free pain tokens.
Eldar will brutalize the Spawn with Doom and massed fire.
Other Chaos will pelt them with plasma, stab it with plague knives and charge is with zerkers fearing no overwatch.
The new DA will slaughter them with maces and plasma and salvo 4 bolters.
It may work if you charge orks to deny their FC, or feed them to Dreads and other things that rely on causing ID, but Spawn, while useful are not a catch-all amazing unit.

Take a space wolf ally.
Cast prescience on punishers.
Now punishers reroll misses with their 87 S5 shots.
Or in the new DA codex, take a bike unit with a rad grenade launcher. Hit them with that then blast away.

Manticores and rad grenade launchers are probably the most efficient means of doing the job, but dreadnoughts will handle the problem as well if you can manage to get them into melee.

Yes, but who runs Dreadnoughts these days?

Well, you have to keep them back safely. Chaos armies tend to field Havocs or Obliterators who can target Dreads asap.

Spawn are incredible in 6th given that the opponent cannot ignore them (movement maybe too good for spawn...). Spawn demand a response and put most units on a tight clock. Very pleased that they are feasible in this 'dex.

Seriously for less than those points you can buy a twelve man firewarrior squad with a tetra.
Whilst one on one a spawn will reach the tau line (are they fearless?) Lets look at 3 teams of fw/tetras using proper focus fire
t1 36 bs5 = 10
t2 72 bs5 = 20
Thats two dead squads before they reach you, once you factor in tetra weaponry and overwatch its easy enough to dispatch the remaining squad after they eat a squad of fw.
Its perhaps not the best way to dispatch spawn but its not unrealistic to actually be running this in a list.

Well, the Chaos army may run two HQ's on bikes (steeds, jaggernauts) each of which leading a squad of Spawn and so can soak up some wounds and stay alive via LoS.

I run spawn spam. They are underwhelming against MEQ armour. Basically, the units get naturalized by tarpit. Yes they have volume of attacks but 3+/2+ is a good save.
Nobody wants their DEVs or LFs tied up in combat, but other than that. I'm disappointed. Run from the Dreads and Terms!
If they could roll rending, I'd be a fan.
Meanwhile I have 15+ painted Spawn...

Running a hq on a bike wouldnt work, a steed might but then you are changing the original problem. Im sure that if you add the points of those hq to the tau army they could happily dispatch those lords and pickup a vp along the way.

Well, Spawn ignore difficult terrain, the Biker Lord does not. So he will have to test.

perhaps you should playtest against them first before dismissing them. A lot of people have this opinion but they are significantly under rated in today's meta.

As i understand it a lord on a bike gets a coversave due to jink, you can elect to focusfire the members of the squad who dont have a coversave and ignore him completely.

Only if he "flat-outs" which he wouldn't be able to do with the spawn.

Biker models get a 5+ jink save with normal movement. And they can flat out with spawn, so long as you obey the coherency rules -- movement restrictions are always per-model in 6th edition.
As for the cheapest solution to the spawn problem, the Rune Priest takes the cake. Jaws of the World Wolf will kill half the models it touches.

Ah, didn't know that, never used bikers.
So yeah, you can "focus fire" the spawn that are moving the same speed as the Lord. Kinda silly, but he can't soak up their wounds.

Forge/mauler fiends, defilers, soul grinders are all pretty popular. Lots of people like their ironclads too. Blood Angels can put a tough melee dread in an assault vehicle. Lots of armies like to field a drop pod dread with multi-meltas as a suicide tank killer. He could easily be put on counter spawn duty if he doesn't need to alpha strike anything.
