Hi there, In this week’s newsletter we return to the perilous confines of the Zone Mortalis with four fantastic new scenery tiles, two interior detail kits, and a 6th edition update to our free Zone Mortalis Warhammer 40,000 expansion. Read on for more! Zone Mortalis Tile EtaRealm of Battle Zone Mortalis Tiles In a galaxy beset by war, any building or corridor may be pressed into service as a strongpoint. Abrupt corners and shadowed alcoves typify the interior workspaces, while the narrow corridors and indeed larger internal rooms can be sealed off by great plasteel blast doors. These cramped and narrow corridors form the most savage arenas of combat conceivable; battlefields that the Codex Tactica Imperialis refers to as ‘Zone Mortalis’ - the fatal ground. Blake Spence has designed four new Realm of Battle Zone Mortalis tiles: the Epsilon Complex, Eta Complex, Theta Complex and Zeta Complex, each measuring 1' x 1' (300mm x 300mm). These detailed hollow resin tiles are fully compatible and interchangeable with each other and with our Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma tiles; conveniently available together in the Realm of Battle Zone Mortalis Set, allowing for a near-limitless variety of terrain set-ups. These new tiles add huge potential to our Zone Mortalis range, creating new tactical challenges for players as well as fantastic opportunities for modellers. The Theta Complex, in particular, is especially useful as a diorama base as well as allowing large rooms to be created in a Zone Mortalis gaming table. Our Studio team are already talking about using these new tiles to create attack craft hangars and shuttle bays, among others... These four new terrain pieces are available to pre-order now for despatch from Friday 25th January, and you may recall that we recorded a video to give you a closer look at the Zone Mortalis scenery with the initial release of these fantastic scenery tiles last year. Scribe StationZone Mortalis Containment Tanks and Scribe Station Daren Parrwood and Blake Spence have also designed two resin interior detail kits for use with the Zone Mortalis tiles. The Scribe Station and Containment Tanks both form detailed and characterful additions to the wall sections of a Zone Mortalis tile, and are perfect for developing the theme of your terrain, and for use as primary objectives in your games. Both of these detail kits are available to pre-order now for despatch from Friday 25th January. Zone Mortalis Warhammer 40,000 Expansion In addition to a fantastic scenery range, the Imperial Armour team also released a completely free Warhammer 40,000 expansion, allowing you to set your own games in the desperate and savage confines of a Zone Mortalis. These rules cover a huge variety of environments, from subterranean bunker complexes under bombardment, to the decks of great warships in the midst of void engagements, making for uniquely tense and exciting scenarios. You can download the Warhammer 40,000 6th edition Zone Mortalis expansion from the Forge World website. Is it my imagination or are all of those (admittedly very nice) tiles warped ?
I would have expected them to fix that before doing photos

I don't think they are, I believe that this is just some minor barrel distortion from the camera lens.
Like in this image the concrete at the front of the image appears to be curved, while lines further back appear straight.

I think Panic is right, either that or they are all warped in the exact same way...
Nice looking tiles anyway, didn't bother checking the price but they are good to just look at without needing to uy the things.

I think they are warped: You can see from the shadows that all corners are above the floor, while the middle seems to be on the floor.
FW is known to sell smaller resin parts warped and shrunk. I don't think any of their larger tiles will have a quality control preventing that.

I think that those containment tanks look like fun. They could have some sort of Tyranid specimens in them, or Tyranid EGGS! That would make them good objectives for my Tyranid games as the bugs try to get the eggs back.

Sorry to be negative, because they look really cool, but if there's something I need even less than the very expensive Zone Mortalis tiles, it's completely empty, very expensive Zone Mortalis tiles.
I would rather spend my money on FW vehicles, and print out tiles from the PDF's of Sci-fi corridors that you can buy from other companies online, like Fat Dragon Games or Dave Graffam Models.

So... who's the target market for these meant to be? Have they assumed that so few people would buy them that they stuck on the silly pricing (or maybe its just the silly amount of resin in use)? How many of these tiles would one need for a complete board, and could they be used outside a specific ruleset? They'd work for events, but I don't suspect that people would be bringing these along to regular gaming nights.
Personally I dislike the tiles as they appear to be made as some sort of adaption of the Space Crusade rules for 40k games. By this I mean that the corridor sections are oddly spacious (read Tv Tropes: Oddly Spacious Sewers). The issue is the lack of smaller corridors and rooms to detract from the larger ones, so the tiles just come across to me as a series of cargo spaces or the like. The size of the tiles and Forgeworld's questionable quality control's probably leaving a wide margin for those large surfaces to warp (even at their thickness) unfortunately. =/
Some diagonal walls would be nice too btw. ...But who's buying these thing's in the first place to care?=)

The HH rules use a 4' x 4' table.
Each tile is 300mm x 300mm (ie close enough = 1')
Therefore you will need 16 tiles.
If you go fo the blank one, it'll only cost you £320 but the board will look a bit dull.
For a spangly board, the cost goes up to a measly £400.
I'd rather have a titan or a small infantry HH force.

I think you would buy one of these to lavish attention on. And you could have some gorgeous battles over debris-strewn corridors and I like the idea they suggest of making hangar bays.
Of course you could only do this sort of thing if you had a lot of time and money to kill, so this is really catering to the millionaire warhammer market haha

Perhaps instead of trying to sell a a few dozen sets of these for $650 apiece, next release they should just make one, and sell it for $100,000.
Clear resin does seem promising for future releases though.

They're nice and all, but I just find them too dull and undetailed for the price. Other companies produce similar kits for a fraction of the price. The only people I see buying these are those with more money than sense (ok less sense than the average wargamer) wanting to buy a flashy board, ie buying the kit because of the nametag, not its quality. Perhaps in future Forgeworld will produce an addon kit with things like reactors, debris (broken doors for example), stored vacuum suits, containers and the like, youknow, things you could make in an afternoon. At least that would make these kits a bit less dull and cater for those who don't want to just make them themselves. =P

With prices like that its more like Warhammer 401K!
Saying that, I would like to see a ship's interior made out of this... With earthshaker batteries at the side and a hanger in the middle, maybe a few more tiers with a bridge and an engine room.
But like I said... 401K.

How big is your setup? Automatically Appended Next Post: It's a pity they didn't make that scribe station without all the guff on it. They could have had modular bits to go into the cubbyholes making them customizable. As it is every station will have the same piece of parchment hanging off it and the same busted up servo skull.
I'm loving the look of these things though, especially those containment tanks.
