Subject: Team Fortress 2 hats/hat economy get even more ridiculous

A few days ago the TF2 team has announced them RETIRING hats. After a certain date, some time after 2 weeks, these retired hats (the original 9 for this time) "will no longer be sold in the store, randomly dropped, unboxed as unusuals, or acquired through crafting." If you somehow still own a crate that gives these off normally, you can still get them past the date. They will still be tradeable too. I suspect the main reason for this is to get people to buy the stupid hats on the store. People love buying scarce stuff Though this will make the economy interesting. I bet the original 9 hats will now never be used for crafting again much like vintage/genuine items Full Post http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=9714

I wish I was surprised.
But I'm not.
I uninstalled TF2 a few weeks ago cause I realized I hadn't played it in so long. It was kind of sad, but eh, that's life. TF2 took up a lot of time, and I enjoyed it for a long while.

Just a shame they never bothered to do anything for the console version in the way of new maps etc.
Never really got into the PC version this time round.

Oh, they did for the PSN version.
But XBL was insufficient for the task.

XBL wasn't "insufficient" for the task. Microsoft didn't want to give Valve any control over xbox live.
Valve can suck a fat one; Crap servers for Left 4 Dead, Portal 2 being a let down and that piss poor Counter Strike remake really put me off them.
This inane obsession with TF2 and hats is infuriating, it's easy to do but it's not episode 3 is it Valve?

Thats because its literally impossible to do it for free. Valve wants free updates, the other people say they have to charge for it

speaking of L4d, anyone with a decent pc/connection should hit me up, occassionally me and my buddies run a heavily scripted L4d mode I made which is basically "thousands of zombies chase you through the map while you run as fast as you possibly can"
tons of fun

By control you mean "they like releasing free updates for the game and MS doesn't like that unless the game is Mass Effect 3". Well it's free on Steam and PSN.

Thats rather unfair isn't it? It is a free game after all and Valve have now made more money from TF2 from item sales than they made from the base game. I have spent the grand total of £0.00 since the game went F2P and I have access to all the content and I have crafted all the weapons that I am interested in (and I still have a vast stock pile of random crap). Episode 3 has certainly been worked on in the past (as has episode 4 apparently) but Valve were clearly unhappy with it and didn't release it. It will see the light of day eventually but do you really want HL to become a tedious treadmill game like CoD or do you want a genuinely great game when it is eventually released?
The real reason for artifical scarcity of these hats is that valve is constantly experimenting with the economy of TF2 as well as their real money economy. I think that the aim here is to try to see if they can introduce a 'currency' item, one that will have a relatively fixed value.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

There's a difference between what Mass Effect 3 has (free DLCs) and what Valve wanted--which was to continually release patches without Valve being charged for them. There is a cost for patch certification and testing on the 360 and PS3 which Valve wanted removed for them or they wanted Microsoft to be required to package Steam for the Xbox 360.
Well it's free on Steam and PSN.
Yeah, it's free on those because Valve controls the certification and testing process for the game. Anything that goes wrong is on their heads, not Sony's.

Which is exactly how it is on the PC, so there's really not much of a difference to Valve.

As much as I love Valve, their console ports are generally speaking absolutely pants. The Orange Box was a mess on consoles, especially PS3, and Team Fortress 2 for consoles got NO updates at all. No hats, no weapons, no MVM, nothing. It's like Valve thinks that consoles aren't worthy of their effort. The thing is, I know they CAN do good ports, as the PS3 version of Portal 2 was brilliant (aside from the lack of a map creator). So it's obvious they really don't care.
They aren't as bad as Bethesda in that respect though. After all, look what happened with Skyrim on the PS3. Grr.

You are propably right on valve thinking consoles not being worth their time. Gotta respect smart devs. Microsoft has said that consumer must pay for dlc and even when valve offered to buy dlc for everyone microsoft denied. Also msoft certification is not QA. It's closer to blackmailing.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

Wow, talk about sweeping statements. Whilst I will agree with you that Microsoft's policies are absurd, the Xbox 360 is not the only console in existence. Gabe himself said that the PS3 has great potential for games, which makes their attitude that "lowly consoles aren't worthy of our godly attention" even more grating. Especially considering, from a financial point of view, consoles are probably more profitable due to a larger player base.

Given that Valve are releasing thier very own console I think that they do pay attention to them.
As for poorly ported games on console just think about how many there are for PC.

My beef is with shoddy ports full stop, not just from PC to console. Like Rage for example, which had a terrible PC port (although the PC community's response, complaining about how games should always be made for the PC first and how those dirty console gamers only deserve ports was rather stupid).
