Hey folks. After playing games recently with my mates (they play Eldar, Dark Eldar, Space Marines, Dark Angels, Chaos and Necrons mainly) they have come to the conclusion that Tau are apparently under priced for what they bring to the table. I couldn't help but laugh and ask why.
One example was that even though Firewarriors have a rubbish stat line, the strength of their pulse rifle isn't show in points, i.e. Firewarriors should be priced more than a 10pts, which I personally find ridiculous. I'm aware there was a post discussing Firewarrior price in a different forum index, I'm more curious as to how people feel about them as well as the other 'under priced' units in the codex.
Another example of Tau being under priced was that because Crisis Suits have 2 wounds and can potentially fire two weapons a turn that they should be more expensive. Yet again I found myself laughing at this as a naked suit with nothing is 25pts with a mediocre stat line bar their armour save.
Personally I find myself saying 'No - they definitely need a points decrease in general' when comparing to current codices, as much as it may seem bias coming from a Tau player.
I think :
Crisis Suits should have base value dropped slightly as well as some of their weapons/support options
Stealth Suits need a major decrease
Firewarriors need a point or two decrease
Kroot need a major point decrease
Vespids need a major point decrease
Pathfinders need a slight points decrease
Piranha needs a major decrease
Hammerheads are debatable although railgun should be cheaper, however some upgrades should be increased
Skyray needs a points decrease
Broadsides are debatable as they are incredibly efficient for what they do

This is not an opinion:
Your friends are either screwing with you, morons, or idiots. Though I'll give your Eldar friend a pass.

This guy has it right, tau is Codex: Overpriced.
Don't try to tell me that broadsides need to be cheaper, obliterators are better in all respects and only a few points more.

I genuinely wish they were screwing with me (no pun intended) but I'm afraid they are idiots and morons
And no excuse for the Eldar player as he is the one that also plays Necrons

I would argue that Tau are probably one of the three weakest codices in 40k at the current moment (I still think it's better than Eldar, and BT are somewhere in the bottom 3 as well). The only things in the codices that ARENT overpriced are arguably Crisis Suits and Broadsides. Fire Warriors would probably be balanced (or slightly shy of it) at 8 points. To me, the problem isn't solved by cutting costs, but by making entries in the codex worth their price (for the most part, I still believe that the only way to make Stealth Suits, Vespids, and all every vehicle that isn't a Hammerhead or Tetra cheaper).

is the guy who plays Necrons the same who complains about Firewarriors?
Lets do a quick comparison between Firewarriors and Immortals, arguably one of the best Troops in the game.
For 7 points more the Immortals get the following:
- +2 WS
- +1 BS ( we can get this too for 2 points and making the unit not scoring, great deal right?)
- +1 S & T
- +3 Ld (+2 if we pay for the 'ui tough)
- +1 AP and auto-glance on 6s
- and most importantly Reanimation Protocols
And now let's look what they loose in return:
- 6" weapon range

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too! |

Except for the part where Obliterators don't get a twin-linked S10 AP1 weapon. You know, arguably the best anti-tank weapon in the game. There are quite a fair number of semi-bad to outright horrible units in the Tau Codex; Broadsides are not among them.

Broadsides need a bit of reworking. They are 80 points ppm just to be able to move and fire them, and with no built in Invul save or mark options.
They also suffer from being stuck with only one primary weapon and two secondary weapons that are somewhat lackluster on a tankbusting unit.
That being said, they are a twinlinked railgun. It's an awesome gun. People tend to focus too much on Tau's +1 guns that they forget some of the other details about them.
|
I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."
"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Agreed
Due to some rubbish toughness (not that im bitching about it ) it doesn't take much to instagib broadsides and suits considering the vast quantity of S8-10 weapons now available to a lot of armies, something which I feel my mates and some people forget.

The problem with broadsides is that if you drop the price, there far too spamable, and you can't raise the cost as that makes them naff, my solution would be to make there upgrades a little cheaper, they are more than worth the 80pts in 6th

Broadsides are amazing for what you get, a price decrease would be a bad idea. I don't think broadsides are as much as an issue compared to other units in the codex.

I don't think you'll find many people who argue that the Tau are in the bottom tier of the current codices.
Rather than making suits cheaper (I don't mind their cost) keep them at the same price and make them *BETTER*. Giving them +1 toughness (T5) would make a world of difference.
I don't know what to do about firewarriors... With changes to 6th ed and being able to move + shoot to full range, if my FW are within 30" on my turn, then they'll be withing 24" on yours. Rather than make them cheaper, give them back what was meant to be their big advantage: 6" of range over "normal" small arms. Make Pulse Rifles 36" range.
IMHO just these two small-ish changes would instantly make Tau a viable choice for tournament lists again.

i havent faced any tau but every list i see tau players post, it seems shockingly light on numbers to me. They arent hordy, but neither are blood angels and i still tend to face only ~30 or so less BAs than i have Orks usually....which when im fielding over 120 models in a 1500 game thats sayin somethin.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

Hell no to the 36" range lol, but I totally agree about making suits cheaper, but not the base cost, buff all suits to bs4 and cheapen all upgrades, this would improve them enough whilst keeping them at an elite cost, as we should all remember you pay for the option of taking options, this is something gw consistently does.

Why? Why does this sound any crazier in 6th than a 30" weapon sounded in 4th (when the codex was released)?
