Subject: Current Citadel Paint Range - Goopy, Globby Soup Issues

I've been painting extremely regularly over the last month (got a Ravenwing squad that's stubbornly refusing to be finished), and most of my basic paints are the current Citadel range. I have, consistently, been having issues with the paints turning to goopy, globs of foul smelling messes. It has happened on a number of colors so far, though the metallics seem to be more likely to do it.
Since starting up again in late November, I've lost at least a half dozen pots like this. They separate, start smelling foul, and part of the separated chemicals start to harden and turn goopy. I keep paints stored proper side up, in a temperature controlled room that sits at about 70F most of the time. When painting I pull paint out of the pot onto a palette and then close and stow the original pots. There are times that the pots that have gone bad I've opened maybe one time (Auric Armor Gold, specifcally, did this). A couple times I've been able to shake them back to usability, but usually I have to toss them.
Here are the paints I've had issues with:
Skull White (went bad today, prompting this post)
Ceramite White
Brass Scorpion
Auric Armor Gold
Ushabti Bone
Ironbreaker (this was able to be shaken back to usability and the smell faded once it remixed)
Imperial Primer
Balthasar Gold (also was able to shake back to usability)
Gehenna's Gold
How common is this for other people? Am I experiencing a normal volume of this, or should I start switching out to another brand entirely as the pots fail? When getting back into the hobby I went with 'the old standby' when choosing paints and picked up Citadel. The P3 paints I've picked up so far (Morrow White to replace the GW whites, a couple different shades of gray) have been very good.

There is not much you can do. Some of my old Black Lid.pots are like this (granted, they are 5 Years old) but I find a drop of water or thinner sorts them out into useable form.
Unfortunately, it is almost certain GW has designed the paints this way. Reduced shelf life, meaning you either have to use the whole pot faster (thus getting through more models and having to buy more) and therefore buy more paint as well, or wait for it to go bad, thus losing your money on the pot and then buy more. £££

Yes, this is what I hate more than anything about GW paints. They intentionally make them so they dry out easily. How do I know it's intentional? Because some 15 years ago they had paints that DIDN'T dry out and they just keep changing pots every few years to yet another pathetic design that lets the paints dry out. I still have some paints from 15 years ago that even now are closer to "brand new pot" consistency than ones I've bought in the past couple of years.

I think the difference in consistency between the P3 and Citadel of similar colors is telling. It has to be intentional. The Citadel whites (Skull AND Ceramite) have been utterly worthless, with no amount of thinning making them usable. I got maybe thirty minutes of painting with one of the pots before it started to harden while just opening it infrequently to refill my palette. I've had better experiences with Michael's store brand white acrylic (which is $0.50 USD a bottle, twice the amount per bottle).

I have noticed the shorter shelf life. I have several hex bottles that are still going strong from 15 years ago. I buy Cote D Arms paint, which are the same paints as GW from long ago. The only danger there is that the paints from CDA aren't as 'thick' as the current GW paints, so require some technique to get decent results.

Are you leaving the pots open the entire time you use them? That might be a problem, especially with Ceramite White which dries quite quickly. I'm not really sure, but I figure even though the bulk of the paint won't dry, the thin stuff around the edges will dry and start globbing up your paint. Try opening the pot, removing the paint and then closing them again. Ensure that the sealing surface is clear. I know GW pots are bad, but I haven't had any go off THAT quickly (though admittedly I haven't used a lot of the new paints).

I used Flah Gitz yellow only once when they released the new paint line. When I went to use it last week, it had separated. There was a thin, watery portion , and all the pigment had hardened in to a useless glob of crap. Had to throw the pot away. I haven't used any of the other new paints, since I still have plenty of the old stuff.

Nope. I typically paint using a dry palette, scooping a small amount into a cupped portion, mixing with a 1:1 water:paint ratio and then closing and stowing the paint pot. This is the reason I posted as there is nothing I can think of that I'm doing that is causing the issue (obviously, it's still possible, which is why I'm asking). This is the exact thing I had happen with my Auric Armor Gold. One use, then done.

You could just have a bad batch, since I've been using the new paints and they seem fine. I've had the new whites for a couple of months and there haven't been any SHELF-LIFE: NO LIFE CONSEQUENCES.

The only colour I had a similar issue. is Leadbelcher. As soon as I leave the store and get home, the paint separated from its fluids. "Lets shake it then..." was my first idea. Shook it for a few seconds, nothing happened.......shook it again for a minute, nothing happened.........shook it for two minutes, nothing happened.
I opened the pot and what do I see? The fluid was completely seperated from the pigments. The pigments were stone hard. I got back to the store and they replaced it immediately. Back home, same problem. Then I went with my buddy. We both bought Leadbelcher. We got home and started painting. His paint worked like a charm but mine was STILL solid, for the third time! I have never used Leadbelcher because of this problem. What black magic is this?

My leadbelcher (3 pots so far) also seems to separate _really_ fast. In fact all the silvery metal ones do.
Let it sit for a few minutes and it's already started to separate.
I had problems with Ushabti too. New pot stored cool and dry, completely separated. Shaking helped but it's now very slightly chunky.

iv had this with balthazar gold and ceramite white. there is a thick layer of flow improver or some such thing sitting ontop of all the paint/pigment. what i usually do is tip it to the side so that crap flows to one side, then i scoop down into the good stuff, throw it on the wet pallett and it's good to go. I never shake any of my gw paints.
there was actually so much flow improver or whatever it is seperated out sitting ontop of my balthazar gold that i just drained a bunch of it off. It had no pigment in it whatsoever. no loss.
