So my friend and I are attending the BAO 2013 GT and in conversation yesterday, we were thinking about costumes. We're bringing Space Marines and thought it'd be really cool to get a suit of that SM armor you see in cosplay videos from conventions.

They seem to all be scratch built (no surprise there), but there must be someone somewhere who would take a commission(s). Looked around some Bing results, but no leads.

Anyone who can point my buddy and I in the right direction, it'd be greatly appreciated.

The biggest deal is that the costumes are expensive, and due to IP issues cannot be sold.

You can only make these things for personal use sadly.

Well, gak.

Thanks, I hadn't really considered the IP issue.

They can't make you a set, but they can tell you how to make your own.

maybe you could contact the guys in Cali that have the how-do video and instructable.

They did thiers using vacuuform molds and probably still have the forms.

Perhaps they would be willing to help you on some level.

Go to 504th.com and look up Shawn Thorssen. He goes by Thorsoli or something very similar. He's the one that did the full-sized Dark Angels marines.

They have painters' stilts in the boots, the arms are so long that they have a special rig in the forearm to be able to close the hands, and a typical person's eye level is about neck height. That means you're wearing the helmet like an awkward hat.

He did use vacuuform molds, and he has a step-by-step lay out in his blog and on the site.

Sorry... That's 405th.com, not 504th.

That's not actually true... the copyright GW has may only pertain to miniatures. Even beyond that, I believe the custom-made suits can be considered an art piece.

Anyway, you should try to contact this guy. He does good work.

The biggest problem is that you need to find stuff to make them, and it's going to be time consuming and possibly expensive, depending on what you use. Depending on the materials, it could be easy to accumulate damage, and you'll need to develop a system for making repairs, because just patching the damage isn't aways easy.

You'll also need to think about whether it's worth doing, because it will be cool, but also intensely nerdy.

GW will not have a problem with you making it for your own use.

As a discussion grows in length, the probability of a comparison to Matt Ward or Gray Knights approaches one.

And I take it that getting the costume made for free, but paying the person who made it for another service would be fraud?

Im making a commisar costume. The pattern and the materials alone are costing up too 100$ of dollers(granted, my aunt is getting really into it.
But also think how you might have to shape the mold or the plastic from the costume. You might need thing like vaccum seal.

I believe you can discretely pay them for the materials and "borrowing" their machines.

Unless a profit is being made selling someone else's IP it is difficult for someone to file an IP infringement suit.

GW will send out Cease and Desist letters till kingdom come of course.

For a suit of PA the materials themselves arn't super expensive(compared to what you are getting anyway. I'd say the market value for a full size suit of PA would be upwards of $$4-5000) but its the equipment needed to make them that could really set you back.

If GW allowed people to sell suits of PA you could make serious buck. A couple suits would easily pay for the equipment and everything past that would be pure profit.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

It appears that GW ought to consider issuing a license.

The problem with that is that GW become culpable for people wearing what are in fact huge health a safety risks. Step onto a road and you cant see the car coming behind you. Have a fire, cant run fast enough, or exit safety doors.

Their policy may seem absurd, and usually is, but on this occasion they have to leave it as 'personal use only'.

Again, thanks for all of the help. I'm in communication with a fellow in SoCal who seems rather legit. It won't be at BAO this year, but expect to see someone in PA at a GT in California in the not-too-distant future.

He means he doesnt buy the armour set, but he buys a spanner for $k and gets the armour free.

Technically this is legal, but only if the sale is seen as completely separate from the exchange.

So either the cash needs to be handed over separately first, or the armour. If one is held back for the other then it can be argued to be one trade.
