Hello, Dakka.

Usually, I frown upon these kinds of threads, but I'm at my wits end due to indecisiveness.

I've been given a wonderful opportunity to start a new army, but I consistently lock myself in a deadlock (it's been well over a month of me trying to decide on a new army!).

Thus, I'm looking for some help here.

Some Info:

I already play Orks, so they're out.

No Chaos Marines or Necrons.

The local players in my area play: Space Marines (vanilla), Space Wolves, Tau, and Imperial Guard

I'd prefer a somewhat low model count army (mostly due to a budget).

I'd prefer an army that's a bit more challenging to play.

I like speed, if possible.

Any input? (Please state why you think I should pick a certain army as well).

Thanks in advance!

You could play jet bike eldar. Fairly low model count. And takes a lot of working in unison to be good.

GK Terminators. Not Draigowing (although a unit of Paladins is optional) but Terminators. Low Model count, bit more challenging than Paladins (less survivable), and quite different to most other armies.

Failing that, Mechanised Eldar. I hear that's quite challenging to play with.

Take advantage of the new release of Dark Angels.

If you go with either Deathwings or Ravenwings you'd have a relatively low model count, and when you have the money expand into the core Dark Angels.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

I like the idea of this. Possibly 4 squads of foot sloggers backed by 2 Dreadknights and led by a Librarian?

Then again, what makes these guys better than Deathwing?

Eldar!

1) Certainly a low model count, they are made up of Small/Elite units. You can run a Jetbike/Mech list which can be very effective with under 25 models

2) You prefer a challenge? Then forget Grey Knights. GK are very bland, and IMHO one of the easiest armies to play. Eldar are like playing 40k on Hard mode. It takes a good bit of skill to make Eldar work, but if a player who HAS that skill can make an Eldar list truly sing.

3) Everyone loves playing against the guy who brought Eldar (They're so rare these days!)

I agree with the Eldar suggestion(s), from what I've heard they're rather challenging, and obviously fast.

If you don't detest playing vanilla marines, try white scars, played according to fluff. That'll definitely be a challenge.

"And they shall stammer"

3000+ pts Chaos Space Marines
~500pts Imperial guard

What would be a typical jetbike Eldar list around 1500/2000 points?

Space wolves drop pod army, speed, agressive, competitive.

Do yourself a favor, and don't do Eldar. Not until a new codex at least.

Dark Angels or Grey Knights sound right up your alley though. You can do a nice, elite army, with lots of room for future expansion. Elite armies are generally take more skill as well, since mistakes are often more punishing.

I think you should pick whatever you will enjoy spending countless hours painting and staring at sitting on a shelf. I think thats the most important decision to make.

I'd say this. You can find that speedy, elite eldar is everything you're looking for, but then when you start, you can't stand painting so many bright, smooth, clean and solid colors on skinny little models, you'll hate it. How aesthetically pleasing an army is to you should be as big a factor as the type of list you want to play.

I'm thinking that I'll roll with Grey Knights.

Here's what I'm planning on:

Librarian

3 Squads of 5 Terminators with 1 Psycannon and a mix of Halberds/Hammers

4 Paladins

Land Raider (for Libby and Paladins)

Vindicare

That was rather offensive of you.

I built a list based on what I like. I like Psykers, Terminators, and the Vindicare has always been a love of mine.

I thought the 1,000,000th visitor prize would give away that fact that this was a joke.
