okay GW just put the new grim hammer dwarfs up for advance order, i love the models and the stats are pretty good.
I was wondering if any of you would take them. Now the erebor dwarfs can take spears or pikes im not sure, but i would
support the grim hammers with spears and pikes so there most likely going to win the fight and kill someone.

You cannot get spears/pikes in an Erebor army. You also may not support two-handed weapon dudes. Your best bet is surrounding the n00bs with your dwarves or mounted allies.

You can actually get spears for Erebor dwarfs and you can support two-handed weapon guys, its in the new rulebook

probably not getting them- overall style is nice, but I don't like two-handed weapons in the rules, so I'm content to sit back and wait for some shields or, even better, spearmen before I splash out on more of my beloved dwarves.
I'm also hoping for dwarven crossbows, but that's a slim chance and not really related

Same as a dwarf warrior with strength 3, defense 6 and fight 4 yet they cannot take shields or bows and for a model with that amount or armour they should be defense 7.

how many points are they? If it's 8, fair play. Any more, too pricey.

well theyre two handed weapons are special the can use bash or piercing strike. With piercing strike if you win the fight you get +d3 str but if you lose the fight you get -d3 defence. If you have a banner and spears supporting them you can do alot of damage

Ol' Blighty

Bash doesn't seem that useful to me, and piercing strike's available for regular dwarves.
There's only two units with spears in the entire dwarf army (vault wardens, where they're much better with the shieldbearers) and a character (Mardin?)
so spears aren't gonna be great as a turning point until whenever they come up with the models for Erebor warriors (which I will, incidentally, buy a few packs of)
Bottom line for me, they're regular dwarves with two-handed weapons for 3 more points. If they had a special rule or two, or higher fight or defence, then they might be worth it. As-is, they're better against heavy armour, worse against light, which isn't worth the 11 points- I'd much rather run 12 dwarves with shields (D7) than instead be able to run 10 of these guys.

Also you could spend the points on better things. These models in my opinion are probably just for show to keep in with the Hobbit theme.

Tough Tyrant Guard

They're not the same as regular dwarves - they also have throwing weapons. Regular warriors from the Durin's Folk list in the Free Peoples can't take those, and I don't think the Hobbit ones can either.

Heck, if you consider them a two-handed warrior with a throwing weapon then it's a cheaper upgrade than it is for Freep rangers, though they're a bit less accurate. I don't know - my throwing axe rangers always seem to get massacred anyway.

They're worthy of some consideration beyond "2h warrior with a useless special rule" though.

I'm not sure 2h warriors are a great throwing weapon platform as it is. My take on 2h weapons in general is that due to the duel penalty you usually want them in a supporting role to murder things in a fight that someone else is probably going to win. In many cases that's going to mean you can't deploy the throwing weapon because you're charging into a combat (eg. Gimli charges Balrog, throwing an axe, then Grim Hammer charges Balrog and is unable to throw axe and becomes overcosted 2h warrior).

If you were going the other way around (say a Warrior and a Grim Hammer charge a foe, the Grim Hammer can probably charge first to get a clear throw, then the Warrior piles in afterwards) then it would work, though.

I guess the other problem with mixing them with Freeps book dwarves is they'd be a different contingent, right? So banners wouldn't apply across the contingents?

Anyway! Neat model, maybe I'll pick some up if I decide I don't have enough dwarves one day.

Two-handed weapons are about as good as one-handed- better offensively, worse defensively, so it kinda balances out.
So a throwing axe still isn't worth the points- Iron guard are only 4 points extra for basically the same thing but with one-handed and two attacks.

Well all models have hand weapons, so you assume grimhammers also have one handed attacks, if that's what you meant.
