Hi guys just looking for peoples general opinion, are you guys looking forward to star trek into darkness? I've seen the trailer and it doesn't look as good as star trek, that was released a year or so ago.

And what do you think of the game coming out in may! I'm really looking forward to that

And does anyone play star trek legacy anymore? I have it on xbox but can never find a game

I'm looking forward to the movie.

The game will probably be bad but I may try it anyway.

No one played Star Trek Legacy ever but I love that game. I don't own a copy but I should pick up one the next time I see it.

You judge movies by there trailers? Also most movie based video-games tend to be pretty bad so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

JJ can keep his silly remake universe. I'm sticking to the Prime.

Man, I'd love if someone made a new Star Trek Starfleet Command game, preferrably set in the ~STVI era. Game mechanics felt really nice; proper sci-fi naval combat.

No and no. The last film was riddled with plotholes, lense flare, and a poor plotline. The dialogue and acting were the only saving graces of the film for me.

Only Star Trek game I enjoyed was the old RTS Armada. Decent enough game.

What sort of potholes?

And JJ put lense flare in on purpose, I thought it made it look a lot better :3

I am curious about the game in so far as the co-op is being pushed, and I love co-op, but it is a movie game, so I am skeptical about it being all that good. Taking a wait and see approach.

I will be seeing the film for sure, as I don't hate change or fun.

Stuff like how that cliché leather villain knew when Spock would show up when he entered the anomaly after he was pulled through, for example.
Why the Tal Shiar would go "lulz let's turn a mining vessel into a warship and leave it in command of a maniac". (and even for the Tal Shiar bit you'd have to buy a comic book; that stuff wasn't touched in the movie at all)
Why said maniac would want to kill the ancestors of the only dudes who actually wanted to help his people.

And let's not even go into supernovas eating entire galaxies.
A physicist was also quoted for saying that "red matter broke the part of her brain that does science". There's technobabble, and then there's lazy writers.

Apart from the plot holes there were also just lots of silly details that just "felt wrong" to me, such as the interior designs (bridge = Apple store, engineering = brewery with water slide), why there was an Orion at Starfleet Academy (okay, we all know it was fanservice; still goes against Orion background), why a Vulcan Academy teacher would apparently have no problem with having a love affair with one of his students, or how said Vulcan was perfectly willing to exile a fellow officer to certain death on an ice world just for speaking out rather than just throwing him into the brig. And why exactly did we have that silly car chase at the beginning? Guess it was absolutely necessary to show how this Kirk was a "rebellious badass".

Also, I seriously cannot get used to the bridge crew looking like some sort of High School football team.
They basically turned Star Trek into a mix of Beverly Hills 90210 and Batman. Eugh.

Rant over. Don't get me wrong, I was actually entertained by the movie, but to me it definitively was not "Trek". The sole relationship it had to the original were a bunch of names. The characters felt wrong, the looks felt wrong, the story felt wrong, let alone the absence of any of the spirit the original had. I also do not really see the magical revival this movie has supposedly (at least according to some outspoken fans) brought to the franchise. Where's the TV shows? The novels? The computer games? It's been, what, two years now? The way I see it, JJ's rape of the brand was more like a nail in the coffin (and this makes me afraid of the planned Star Wars movies), and I have a feeling the next movie will score worse in theaters as a lot of oldschool fans now know what to expect rather than being curious. I for example won't be seeing it in cinema this time around.

Wow thanks for your opinion Lynata. I did notice a few things like spock not just putting him in the brig, but I think this movie is not really aimed at the original fans and i imagine like myself, the younger generation want cool space fights and people being sucked into the void!
Or at least I do anyway..

And now that you mention it the bridge does look a bit like an apple store..

Naw you're right, maybe it really is a generational thing and it's simply not "my Trek" anymore. It's just that I kinda feel that they could have achieved just as much whilst simultaneously honouring the original if they had just went with a different name and their own franchise - this way, it kinda feels as if the only connection is an established brand, as if someone was scared the product would not be able to stand on its own legs.

I'm very sceptical and an outspoken critic of reboots/remakes in general, as I feel they tend to "violate" the original creator's vision, so for what it's worth it is not just a Star Trek thing. I also enjoyed watching the new BSG, and still maintain that it abused the original and I would've liked it more if they just went with another name. So to me, the "let's take an established name but make it completely different!" approach tends to have the opposite effect of what the PR guys supposedly intended.

Same about Total Recall, Judge Dredd, RoboCop, etc pp ...
Hollywood needs to get its act together and stop raping my childhood!

Essentially, what this guy said:

"Don't go off and say, 'I have my own artistic vision.' Okay, good -- so call it something else. Don't ride the coattails of the people who came before you to launch your own artistic vision."

The visuals just put me off. I've only seen the photos, but that was enough - not what I'm used to from the comics. Dredd too skinny, the sets looking more like a modern construction site rather than a MegaCity... I dunno, it just looked ... cheap to me. Like a direct-to-DVD release. A low-budget production.

Given that I never went to see it just based on the images they released, it's not as good an example as the other ones, but it still fits to my general dislike of reboots.
For some reason, I actually liked the Stallone movie, though - yes, it was cheesy, but it just "looked" right. Maybe this (me being "pre-printed" with an existing impression) is why I am more sceptical of any attempt to remake it than if I had never seen another Dredd movie before.

Oh, and my remake scepticism extends into the video gaming sector as well - latest example being X-Com. Just like the new Trek movie, the demo of the game was actually entertaining and fun ... just not what I had hoped for in regards to this title. I think my impression is often tainted by unfulfilled expectations. Somebody tosses a name and it automatically conjures ideas on how it "has" to be, etc, rather than judging it based solely on itself. The "how it could have been" weighing more stronger than the "how it is". Psychology is a funny thing.

Lynata... Your flat wrong, dont usually.like to be this forward, but as a big judge dredd fan I can say the new movie did a bloody good job of getting the feeling of the world over, watch it,then come back and comment.

Your missing out

Maybe I will indeed - I tend to be sceptical against opinions from people who never actually checked something out, so me feeling so prejudiced like this is something that sort of surprises myself. I guess the publisher of that movie just really failed to appeal to me with the material they released, even if I would've actually enjoyed the movie. That, and that I've just been "burned" by so many bad remakes in the past where I *did* bother to watch it. Always a possibility.

Here's the deal, I'll give it a look once it shows up on Netflix.

On the new Star Trek: I liked it. Basically it was really cool but if you stop and think about any part of it for more than 5 seconds the plot really falls apart. So y'know, just don't think about it...

As for Dredd I don't even know what your talking about. Like the new movie isn't honouring the original Stallone movie or something. Pretty sure that's a good thing. As for it looking low bidget, well it is a low budget movie quite frankly and it was amazing what they accomplished with limited resources. Most people who read the comic and have actually seen the movie liked it.

Some of the 'plotholes' weren't plotholes but "buy the prequel comic" incentives.

You can say what you want about the new Star Trek. He has Benedict Cumberbatch playing the villain. That immediately makes it worth watching. Not the film. Just those bits.

Imagine a Sin Graph of quality. The highest points are with Cumberbatch, the lowest points are without him.

I'm looking forward to "Into Darkness" even though, in general, I am totally uninterested in Star Trek. I watched a few episodes of TNG and thought it was pretty eh, and that's it.

But I really enjoyed the last movie, despite all the lens flare (which, seriously, stahp, it was so much worse in Super 8 I cringe to even imagine to what heights it will reach here). I think I'll see it in theaters, which is more then I can say for the last one.

The game - no. My understanding is there has never been a good Star Trek game, right?

PS: Dredd was awesome.

you so wrong, LENS FLARE IS AWESOME! It really makes to film seem more real, I watched the behind the scenes footage afterwards and all you see is JJ hanging onto one of those tracked cameras batty slapping it to high heaven, just to get the lens flare and vibrations just right :3

Star Fleet Command Series

Elite Force Series

I've heard good things about Bridge Commander and Klingon Academy but never played them. I recall the 25th Anniversary game being a decent point and click adventure title.

@Lynata, you forgot to mention the horrible kobayashi maru scene where Kirk didn't do anything clever, he blatantly cheated and did the equivalent of waving his sack in Spock's face. It was juvenile and stupid. It was almost as stupid as making a cadet on probation the first officer of the flagship of a massive interplanetary fleet and then promoting an O0-O1 to an O6 in command of the most advanced starship in the fleet and 400+ personnel of which 99.9% are more experienced and qualified to command.

It's just bad writing.

That's always been part of the story. It's in the Shatner movies. It's canon in both universes.

In the other films (and books) it is said that Kirk reprogrammed the machine to allow him to win, not get someone else to do it for him. The point of the story was to show both his cunning as well as his technical aptitude. I don't like the laissez faire attitude, and it didn't really seem to fit the situation or the character, as exaggerated as it was, but my real problem was that he didn't do it himself. Even if he was a bit of a cowboy, Kirk was also supposed to be insanely smart and extremely skilled.

Wasn't it the Orion fanservice girl who shouldn't have been in the Academy in the first place?
And I agree, JJkirk's attitude really put me off - I get that "cool and edgy" is totally in these days, but ffs. JJspock wasn't much better, sadly. Which is a shame, for I think the actors themselves would've been capable of a closer portrayal of the original characters, if the script would have called for it.
I guess that most people either love the original Trek or the remake, but not both, for either interpretation has its merit - they just speak to different audiences.

Ahtman: If you get a chance to do so, check out Klingon Academy. Brilliant game - it's a bit weird in that the ships really move through three-dimensional space rather than facing each other on a "horizontal plane" like we're used to from the movies/series, but the battles themselves were intense! You could practically dismantle enemy ships piece by piece, ripping apart their hull meter by meter, blowing off their engines, etc. Plus, it has an extremely cool tie-in story with the story of the 6th movie, and they got the original actors for the cinematics:
