I just played a game against bots and didn't really have much of an idea what was going on (also didn't help that I was using a tracker pad and not a mouse ).

Dota II actually predates LoL.

Dota was at first just a game map in Warcraft III, which became popular enough to become its own game, Dota II (like Natural Selection).

Unlike Natural Selection though, I don't really see the appeal of Dota. Both Dota and Dota II always appears to attract jerks for some reason.

Mobas in general attract jerks

Its not that the game itself is bad, most Mobas just have a HUGE punisher for dieing

You die, the enemy gets a butt ton of gold and XP. And teammates hate it when that happens

True dat! If you think people get frustrated over tiny plastic man, you sure will be surprised how some pixels will affect others. A single death (even not your fault) or stealing somebody's else kill will result in half an hour of bitching, verbal assaults, threatening and whining. "noob" and "your mother" is like 90% of their vocabulary.
However, I personally found Dota 2 players heavens above LoL's and the original Dota. At least when it had fewer players. Now it's beginning to go downhill I think.

MOBA games are good if you are competitive and have a thick skin / are able to ignore internet tough guys. For casual, relaxing game play I'd skip those.

Also, as soon as Dota 2 leaves beta stage, unlike LoL, will be true FTP with all the heroes available.

I just stick to Coop Bot Easy Mode

Sure it may not be the most challenging, but less angry people

Funnily enough it isn't.

The strategy elements are fairly simple (you dont build, or command huge armies) and you have this very interesting hero (a chaharacter you control in isometric view) gameplay in a "attack while you defend" -tower defense game.

Dota 2 is the first and only moba I've played and it has quickly become one of my favorite games.
