GW Rules Interpretation Syndrom. GWRIS. Causes people to second guess a rule in a book because that's what they would have had to do in a GW system.

I know, that's what I told my store owner who got me playing trolls... I still want to use Mulg as a Mountain King body...

There is someone working on it here: http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?132225-WIP-King-Mulg

His work looks good so far but that base looks tiny for that model.

Warmahordes for me. Malifaux became really stale after book 3 and some real bad looking models. It was high up for a while but has totally died in my area for the last year or so

^^ What he said.

But on a side note, you really can't go wrong with either system. Both are fantastic.

I'd be more impressed if you had used a shot of the model like the people you quoted did instead of pretty artwork.

On a more serious note, I also have 4 complete Malifaux crews, even though I only played the game two or three times...

Sounds like you may have already gone for Warmahordes, but I find the two games draw very different people. IMHO your choice should depend on what you want out of the game.

WarmaHordes: This game is set up for organized and tournament play. The rules set is tight, there is significant effort to balance factions and it is a very unforgiving game for new players. You will win or lose most games based on the survival of 2 models (your warcaster/warlock and theirs) and quite a few games can be lost by moving a single model 1/2" too far in one direction. The missions are very strategic and straight forward and games tend to be a couple turns of positioning ending in one spectacular feat + charge which either wins or loses you the game. If you enjoy a competitive minis game with chess like qualities (including chess clock timed tournaments), then this is a good game for you.

Malifaux: This game is set up for people who like rpg qualities mixed with their minis games. Every figure has a ton of special rules to make them very different. This is not like Warmahordes or Warhammer where there are standard units that vary slightly from faction to faction. An individual model can have a dozen special abilities, none of which you've seen before. This leads to a lot of character and background for each crew, but makes it difficult to keep everything balanced and to learn what everything does. The missions are encourage movement and specific goals over just smashing your opponent. No one model matters that much and you can win even if you master is killed (or your whole crew for that matter). I've found Malifaux to be a fun game with people who approach it as a fun game. If you play competitive people with Hamelin or Pandora, it becomes far less fun. If you play minis games to unwind after a week at work and enjoy playing with/against new figures just to see what they can do, Malifaux is a good game for you.

Lastly, all of the above is irrelevant if you don't get along with the people who play in either group. First step would be to go to your flgs and talk to the people in both groups. If you wouldn't want to spend your Saturdays with either, than the other game is for you.

I've played both. I play Warmachine/Hordes regularly and I've managed a couple games with malifaux, mostly demo-level stuff with some pieces someone in our playgroup brought around.

I'm by no means an expert on Malifaux, so what I say about the gameplay is mostly first impressions: It struck me as a solid engine and the card-based resolution mechanic was a very cool way of curbing random number screw without making everything static. The wide variety of abilities made individual models seem like they have some nice choices to make. The cons were that in general the list building struck me as narrow and very matchup dependent so much so that they made it the last step before a match. I can see the merits in that, but it was one of the things that made me pull away from investing in the game at the time.

Warmachine/Hordes is solid from a gameplay perspective. The rules are very tight, very clear and there is always a "Correct" resolution to complex interactions. The terminology is also very well defined but there is a lot of it. In many ways it feels a lot like MTG in that the rules are very precise but can sometimes hinge on technicalities that aren't apparent in your first few matches. The overall balance is very good, and even things that aren't competitive are at least workable, the game has remarkably few totalturds in terms of performance on the tabletop.

The system basically demands a competitive mindset and you'll almost always lose even in casual games if you aren't actively monitoring the board state and playing things ahead at least 1 turn your mind. You also have to be aware of what your opponent's models do and have a good idea of how rules will play out even if you've not faced against them before. In all but really small points games say 25 and under, experience is a huge factor in how things play out. In small demo-sized games there are few enough moving parts that even a fresh player can beat a vet just on dice or matchup, once you're in any real sized game facing someone more experienced than you will be a huge uphill battle.

As for looks, that's strictly a matter of taste. The general model quality is about the same, so it's just a matter of art style. I personally vastly prefer the Warmahordes style, it's kind of very over the top and loud for the most part. Some of the stuff is really seems like it could have been ripped right from an animated show you'd watch on Saturday mornings in middle school. Malifaux seems to really aim for this darker/sexier look and really both parts of that kind of make me roll my eyes.

I love how this became a, "let me show you a cool model" thread for a bit

Both games are great systems, I get my dice itch from WM/H, but Malifaux is my main game because I love the combos I can do with the models, and I love the style of the world, it's very grim and dark without being Grimdark.

Chongara, the things you say about monitoring the board in Warmachine holds true for Malifaux. Since you randomly flip for strategies, and you keep secret schemes (or announce them if you want), you're always actively trying to play the objective. I stepped in as a ringer a few weeks ago during an event I was running, and my Strategy was to get more of my models on his half of the board than he had on mine. So I picked a decently easy Scheme to help with that (pick a terrain piece in his deployment zone and get a model in base contact with it), and then I chose my standard Kidnap scheme where I picked three minions and had to try and kill them by the end of the game. I only succeeded on the terrain scheme because I miss positioned my troops and over looked where the things where that I needed to kill.

Granted we only got to turn 3 and I was wearing his line down and would have crossed over had things continued to go my way.

Like I said I had a WM/H Demo game with the PG a couple of days ago and it was really fun. Liked the style of the universe, models were really cool, easy ruleset that I grasped fairly quickly, good balance. Of course he let me win, but it was still really fun. Haven't heard back from the Malifaux guys about a demo yet, so I keep leaning towards WM/H, as does the poll. Even if it isn't by much.

The only thing I really didn't like about warma is the lack of interaction during turns. With each turn the other player watches and does nothing. It kind of put me off.

For example in warhammer you have armor saves, in malifaux you have flips (and back and forth activation). In warma/hordes you just watch and hope your def/armor is good enough.

That is probably the one thing I don't like, because I can sit there and watch my army just get crumpled due to a hot streak... but I can usually survive it.

Would you be willing to do one over Vassal? I could give one using Skype or Google+ Hangouts and the official Malifaux Vassal module.
