So this just occurred to me the other day. Apologies is this is something everyone knows already, I scrolled a bit, though I might have missed any recent related posts.
If you bring an Astropath, it gives you +1 to your reserve roll AND re-roll to outflank. If you're bringing Vendettas or Valks, the Astropath is a must have, imo.
When you come in with your Vend/Valk, use SCOUT (outflank) and go all the way up the flank to the enemy's board edge and come in your 18" minimum, ending in contact with the enemy table edge.
Now when they come in with their fliers (unless they are IG, and as clever as you are), they will pass you to reach their minimum 18". Then just turn and shoot them down. If they enter in hover mode they lose skyfire, so you're pretty safe from their fliers using this tactic. Try to take out their quad gun turn 1 with a Leman or something, and you'll have the sky to yourself.
Yeah, sure it can go wrong in a number of ways, but it sure beats putting your planes out as easy targets for Storm Ravens and Dakka Jets.
Thoughts?

Scout has no effect on a scout move. Scout still confers outflank.
Only an errata could change this.
And there is no errata of it.

They can just come in diagonal basically from their corner. you don't have to go straight.

I'd rather have my flyer come on after my opponents, and then shoot theirs down, even if that means it possibly not making it on board turn 2.

Sure, ok. They come in at an angle and nuke your Vend/Valks. Then they turn and melt your tanks, kill your HQ, shrug off your plasma and use your severed head as a hand puppet. Imperial Guard is fun!

Umm... flyers can come in at any angle... they don't need to scream in perpendicular to the board edge, so this advice may be less than useful :p

I do like getting a +1 on reserve rolls and rerolling table edge. I also( MotF) like screwing with my opponents reserve and table edge roll, too.
I just can't feel good about spending the 30/60 points for them all the time. As with most IG lists, I feel there's something better to spend
those points on.

MOTF is always worth his points. Only leave him out if you're playing against someone you know won't have reserves or be outflanking. They're great at countering flyers in particular - 2/3 of the time it'll come in on the board edge you want it to.
