Ideally it would fill the base, with a bit of overhang from the head (but an upward overhang so as to not interfere with model placement too much)

You could always go lazy, and have him with his legs pulled in, and just a little snout and eyes showing. Then it is just a big rock/shell with a gun on top Fills up the base with no awkward overhang!

In that case, Wehr, you could probably use an actual turtle shell
Might not actually be a bad place to start, and then just sculpt the head, legs, and tail!

What if you got one of thows little lawn statues of a tortoise, and then scratch built the cannon that goes on top?

If thows dimensions are correct, that looks like it would be approx the correct size... I think. I would diffidently be the most adorable engine of destruction to ever grace a table top.

Thanks for all the input folks. As I say, I really want to scratch sculpt the whole thing from an armature but these are good suggestions. Working from an appropriate sized base is a really good idea actually, once I've chosen the location of the feet it'll kind of build itself since I'm working from references. Cyp, that second image is probably going to play a fairly big part in the pose, I think it works really well for the job. And if it all goes horribly wrong I'll do what Wehr said and just do the shell.
Any thoughts on the weapon? The art doesn't work for me massively but I'll copy it if that's specifically what you wanted from Heath?

Gotcha! Thanks for the input it's super helpful, the more guidance from you guys the happier I am, I like to 'stick to the script' with my projects but I've never benefited from having the designers 'in the flesh'.
I was a big fan of the Ottomans when I played AoEIII so I'm vibing this concept pretty strongly now. I'll keep accurate to the art as much as I can but I might consider trying out a few different options in places.

Don't forget the Hamster Berserkers please. Those models would really need a non-metal casting.

Our ultimate goal is to have all of the Warband Units in plastic, including the Heroes. But that will ultimately depend on the success of the initial releases.

Aye, you might need to help kick-start production of everything
I'm currently thinking this will be the order of plastic kits:
1 Otter Ashigaru
2 Rat Raider
3 Weasel Fusilier
4 Mouse Conscript
5 Tanuki Samurai
6 Hamster Berserker / Viklander
7 Badger-At-Claw or Shrew Hussar / Carbineer
8 Mouse Lancer
9 Kunoichi or Daimyo (Includes bits for all levels)
10 Warlord (Includes bits for all levels)
11 Mole Tactician (Includes bits for all levels)
12 Conquistador (Includes bits for all levels)
Which would then get us the ability to do plastic Starter Sets for half of the factions, and then we'd do Axony, Chugoku, Scyzantium, and Zabar...

Seriously? The top three faction options I have been debating over are Zabar, Scyzantium, and Chugoku Oh well...the concept art for those rat raiders does look amazing.
On a mostly unrelated note, is there any easy way to find out what the multipart resin kits (Red Wu, Veiled Assassins, etc.) include for bits and pieces? Your web store doesn't specify how many of what weapon options are included. Also, head options: are there extras or just enough?

If its something the model can take, we include one bit of it for every model in the box. This is also true of extra heads.
I think the only thing that is a 1 per box is the 'Gesture' hand option for the Sand Guard.

I'm digging the order also. When I do demo games at cons, I find Ribenguo is the most requested. With Vanalands and Aquitar tied for 2nd. I don't own any Civitan modles yet, but never get asked about them much when trying to explain all the factions.
Also for abit of input. When I do Intro games I try to stick to what comes in the starter boxes. But their are two exception to this.
-When using Ribenguo I tend to swap the Kunoichi for a Daimyo, but otherwise try to stick to the starter force. I feel like the Daimyo is a more forgiving model to use for new players then the Kunoichi.
-For Vanderlands I tend to give them 5 rat raiders since their usely up ageist troops with rifles.
Also the news about plastic heros kinda surprised me in all honesty. many companies have said before it's hard to get the economies of scale to work with hero models.

I can understand that, I've been going back and forth a few times on Kunoichi vs Daimyo in the starter. It could easily go either way.

I do not know if we will do Plastic Heroes beyond the starter set ones. I feel that if we're going to do plastic troops in the starters we minds well do plastic heroes as well (and do the bits for all 4 levels of equipment).

Will there be an announcement on what will be released at GenCon? Did I miss it somewhere, or are you still waiting to see what pieces you can get done by then?

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

Yeah, the cost of tooling the molds is more expensive than metal/resin, in the long run it becomes cheaper because once the price of making the mold has been paid off it becomes almost pure profit as plastic is fething cheap when compared to resin or metal (at those numbers).
Also are you on holiday, your flag says Ireland.
