At one point they were the elite heavy cavalry of the ogres.
They used to carry a baby rhinox to the top of a mountain to prove themselves.

In this edition, they are simply a slave beast now?
Seems like the whole Ironskin tribe have vanished, along with any hopes of rules for them since the ones printed in an old WD.

Just seems like they have changed the fluff pretty badly and given them large cats instead

Ogres have Mournfangs. The best MC in the game. So...you know...it's kind of hard to shed a tear. You could convert them to Rhinox I guess. But they are already about as close to OP as you can get.

Forgeworld has some rhinox riders.

You could maybe use those models and Thundertusk rules or something. I don't think the FW rules were very good as they simply made even better Mournfangs, which made the universe cry.

Ironskin tribes still there, but they mostly focused on the larger tribes near the valcano's to the west this time. Rhinox riders still have rules from FW if ya wanna use them though, seeing as they weren't in the old dex.

Forge World still has Grimhorn Rhinox riders.

FLuffwise, they appear to have made Rhinox be more super heavy cavelry and rare due to their bad tempers. With Mournfangs being the normal cavelry of the OK.

Rules are still on FW's site, quite different from mournfangs too imo.

Yeah, they got an upgrade.

They became basically Maneaters on Rhinoxen. The unit is Stubborn and Frenzied. Rhinox do D3+1 impact hits, and give +3 to armor.

So with Ironfists they can have 1+ armor/6+ parry. Or be just 2+ with Great Weapons.

Thanks guys

I was generally looking more at the fluff, since they went from being the main warbeast in the army, to a slave beast, which seems like kind of a drastic drop.
Infact, rhinox('s/en?) barely get much attention in the new book.

More kind of irked that i have now got 15 Rhinox riders and a Ghark convertion with no real use for it
May just run them as mourn's.
Shame you cant mount a character on one though.

Yeah, plenty of people run them as Counts As mournfangs. Same base size and generally same whole schbang.

Maybe the main reason they "downgraded them" was so that they didnt have to remind people the pain and anguish of the Rhinox Riders before the 8th book

Depends.
The old ones were just plain nasty and fun to use.

Just caused an issue when 3 fully tooled up bull rhinox set you back over 500 points
(D6 inpact hits, tons of attacks + more)

FW ones are pretty tame i guess.
350 or so for 3 tooled up ones, nice impact, but nothing too serious for its points.

I think you sell them short.

They deal D3+1 Str5 impact hits each on the charge. Then, each Rider has 5 Str5 attacks at WS4 I3. Then the Rhinox has 5 Str5 attacks at I2. Then Str5 thunderstomp. All that with a 1+/6++ save. Or you can sacrifice the Parry and a point of armor to get another attack(or be Str7 ASL on the Riders)

All this on a T5 4 wound model.

Of course they do set you back 115 points each so they are fairly costed. But their damage output is a little silly.

In an ogre army they are also cannon magnets.
Granted, movement can cut down the risk of cannon damage, but its still going to hurt.

Granted, the damage output is pretty damn high, theres no denying that, but i just feel they are too different to what they were.
Before it was more about a fluffy, hard hitting unit under the command of a mounted tyrant on a huge mechanical rhinox.

Just seems to have lost character, thats all

You could also make a "Pseudo" Chariot with the FW rules

Field single rhinox rider, give him champion upgrade and a weapon of choice. May not be as efficient as a chariot but you have basically a cruise missile Bruiser!

Thats one way of using the FW Rhinox Riders. Take them in units of one, all with Champion, heavy armor, and pistols. You will have what Chariots should have always been.
