I realize that the clanrat box has both skavenslave models and clanrat models. I just find it a bit odd that it's a mixture whereas other sets allow you to make a unit as one thing or another the clanrat box has them mixed into one unit so you can count them as both. Then again considering how clanrats are basically just 2-3 pieces per model and the whole body is pretty much a model it's not like you could really customize a slave to be a clanrat unless armor was another piece or something and could go right over the slave bodies. That's pretty much the biggest aesthetic difference between clanrats and slaves considering the slaves are whipped but sometimes probably wear clothes whereas all clanrats have light armor.

Right. I'd much rather a few Slaves with armour than the whole unit use models with an entirely different design than Clanrats. It'd be like a movie with cartoon characters side-by-side with live actors.

I always painted to differentiate, the slaves have just solid color robes, and clan rats actually get clan colors.

Hordes of Skaven are always good and annoyong to fight. Clanrats I have found can also be very good for flanking though, while the enemy is tied with endless slaves, the clanrats can scurry around to the side.

Only disadvantage is facing war machine heavy armies. The blocks of rats will crumble under their fire, but there is of course no lack of ways to combat that with Skaven.

I use the newer, bulkier, better looking skaven as clan rats.

I use the older, uglier, monkey models for slaves

See, I did that at a tournament because I needed all painted models. But artistically, having those two models side-by-side looks just as bad as having painted and unpainted ones.
I guess the upside was that I could prove I put some time into it.
