By the Emperor, if GW had sales like Steam, we wouldn't have wallets.
That... is a reasonable claim.

The Auld Grump

Maybe we'll have half a wallet.

Steam has amazing sales.

I own every expansion pack and piece of DLC for all the Relic Warhammer 40k games on Steam. Every single one for Dawn of War 1 and 2.

I can repaint my Dawn of War armies in an instant and be ready to go, download a free mod and get access to more paintjobs, more models, even brand new armies or balance tweaks. I can change to a new army by clicking a different option on a dropdown menu.

It's hard to believe we use models for anything other than showpieces considering the above. I can't believe I got into wargaming in the first place, but here I am. Painting models is agonizing. When offered a choice between playing a quick jump-in game in Dawn of War or painting my cut-and-paste Dark Angel Spess Mareen, rarely does my Spess Mareen model win that argument.

Fang, son of Great Fang, the traitor we seek, The laws of the brethren say this: That only the king sees the crown of the gods, And he, the usurper, must die.
Mother earth is pregnant for the third time, for y'all have knocked her up. I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe, but I was not offended. For I knew I had to rise above it all, or drown in my own gak.

That's pretty sad, Ted, since games can make you angry and painting can calm you! I have a number of games as well, but I haven't played them in a while thanks to hobbying and wargaming. Plus, it's not physical and could be lost forever if your computer crashes.

The Bones Kickstarter came close.

A dragon for $10 that will be $20 after release and that goes for $80 in metal? Score! (My dragon haul from Bones - Two Nethyrmaul, two Ebonwraith, two Deathsleet, one Wernerclocke (the steampunk dragon), one Kaladrax Reborn, two There Be Dragons (two smaller dragons each), one Pathfinder Red Dragon, and one Jabberwock. I'd be happy with the amount that I spent even if the only things that I was getting were the dragons.)

Some will be used for Kings of War, some will be used for Pathfinder, one will be used for a steampunk game using Spycraft 2.0, and all of them will spend a great deal of time sitting on a shelf, looking pretty.

The Mantic Kings of War Kickstarter also had a bit of that feel - especially after it ran off the rails on the third day.

You know that $20,00 Stretch Goal that we were never going to reach?
Yeah?
We reached it just now.
What are we going to do now?!

And they started throwing stuff up on the board. Most fun that I'd had with a Kickstarter until Bones.

*EDIT* Unstated, but intended - Kickstarter can sometimes feel like those Steam sales.
