I kinda think everyone is missing the point as to why, in my opinion, this speech was awesome.
It has nothing to do with flat tax, HSA, tithe...
It's about the need to drop the current political correctness that is so pervasive to our society.
We need to have an arena where we can FREELY exchange ideas and honestly debate them without getting fee-fee getting hurt.
For the record regarding this tax idea... it's all pie-in-the-sky as there are waaaaaay too many special interest groups/lobbiest/politicians who don't want a fair system and want to keep the status quo.
"Political correctness" isn't some rampant beast that slays free debate and exchange of ideas. What exactly do you believe PC has stopped being discussed?

Yeah it's not like the government is legally forcing you to be politically correct.
SilverMK2 wrote: "Political correctness" isn't some rampant beast that slays free debate and exchange of ideas. What exactly do you believe PC has stopped being discussed?
Because it's so pervasive.
PC-ism (is that a word?) is an emotional appeal of an argument, rather than reason.
Adopting certain positions makes the politically correct feel empowered by believing they're "right", even more so when they are preventing the expression of an opinion that is in conflict with their own. (shaming others for having contrary opinions).

Not really, because if you're making an argument about racial slurs not being an appropriate way to address strangers then political correctness could be part of you reasoning.
The phrase "political correctness" was born as a coded cover for all who still want to say Paki, spastic or queer, all those who still want to pick on anyone not like them, playground bullies who never grew up. The politically correct society is the civilised society, however much some may squirm at the more inelegant official circumlocutions designed to avoid offence. -Julius Ceasar
Political correctness, generally speaking is a pejorative term for a doctrine or policy of being considerate toward the feelings of others, especially minority groups. It is a term that has come in for a bit of deserved lampooning, when oversensitive people and groups (such as colleges or city councils) have come up with seemingly silly and/or heavy-handed policies, or clumsy terms, that overcompensate and create new problems. But mostly it’s a term used in the culture wars to deride liberalism, by people who would like to go on using rude terms for women and minorities without consequence.
Careful observation and considered judgment can allow the interested observer to determine when a given instance of “political correctness” is being derided because it is silly, or because the person deriding it is defending bigotry.
That's the common meaning, of course. The article author seemed to basically use it to mean "common ideas which I don't agree with." And "Un-PC" to mean "ideas opposed to those of liberals".

HOW? currently a single mom with 3 kids gets a tax return far more than she pays in if shes making less than 30k a year. which in turn, is hurting our government more than the person benefitting since they are not paying taxes. Right now as a low income single non dependant, I'm paying far more than the flat tax would have me paying (depending on my point in life, I've paid up to 25% of my income between state and federal taxes) but due to earned income credit, Im allowed to get more back than I pay in.
furthermore, currently those with higher incomes often have enough tax breaks availible to them that they have to pay much less than a flat tax would allow. Some corps are famous for paying zero taxes (bank of america?) One small business owner I talked to actually got a tax return because his tax breaks were greater than the taxes he owed for the year. (made over 100k, but recieved a 5k check after finding all the tax loopholes that credited him for expenses....again how is this accurate?)
The flat tax theory may not be perfect, but its definately better than what we have. currently both the poor and rich benefit, but the middleclass is having to pull all the weight for everyone else. You should never recieve more than you paid in tax return wise, and I always thought the purpose of a tax return was to recieve the amount you OVERPAID in taxes.
I really don't care if it hurts my household, I'm more of an advocate of whats fair to all people involved. Middleclass pretty much run the economics of the country, but we bleed them dry with taxation. Us under middleclass citizens need to either work harder or smarter to advance our position, rather than let the government pay us to stay here and take the easy road. We need things to build towards not incentives to stay stagnant.
If the middle class have the power to introduce a flat tax system, why not use it to introduce a progressive tax system that will gather in more of the money that rich people are currently avoiding through various means?

Maybe not enough of the middle class lust after rich folks' property?

Ah the 'politics of envy' strawman.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Or maybe the "middle class" doesn't actually have any power...

The Flat Tax, as it is commonly discussed in the USA, involves compensation in excess of total, individual tax burden.
