Marines who love Space Marines
By Alan Siegel at Slate.com
Thought this was an interesting article, kind of an old one but...w/e. At first, I wasn't impressed by the article because the beginning just shoots you through a vague name dropping description of 40k. Then it follows up with some lackluster googled info about GW. Still, i was interested to hear how service men/woman played 40k and enjoyed the hobby. The article featured several Marines sharing some interesting tid-bits and also had its share of terminology "Faux pas" IMHO
The game is essentially Risk but with Dark Eldar and Chaos Daemons
mmmmm........no.....but ok.
figurines
 there it is..
Overall i enjoyed reading it and especially liked the description of an afternoon gaming at Mike Brandts house lol. A quick comment by Neil Gilstrap is tossed in too.

It was posted a couple times on here a while back (I know because I reposted it), but 40k is popular in the military, I have several Army and Marine friends that are players.

So now we're criticising grammatically correct descriptions? A figurine is a statuette. A statuette is a small statue, which is a carving or cast of something.

I understand that. I personally think that phrase calls up little glass dolphin or fairy collections to most peoples minds who are not familiar with the hobby.Describing words like miniature, model, or even figures fit better ....Even GW tries to avoid that word.

I picked up 40K on my first deployment from a team leader in my platoon. I carry on the tradition, being in the middle of my second deployment, by painting and building. Even labeled a wooden shelf I built as "The Glorious Shelf of Art" where I display minis I have completed.
I get called a nerd, but funny thing about it is I have more experience as an infantryman than most guys I work with.

I imagine the jokes and ball busting are the worst part in the military. You can always tell them your a warrior-artist lol. Do you find it hard to find time/ space to paint on deployment?

All that crap ended at basic, during deployment the paratroopers I was with pretty much embraced anything that did not involve rucking and sandbags, almost every soldier that was exposed to the hobby at worst said they could never do it because they had no patience for painting or building, usually they ordered paints and minis within a few days, or had family at home ship some.
I built a table/desk in my hooch to work on stuff, when I had time, and some of the guys built a sandtable to game on, hell we even had a few officers play a few games, was funny to see enlisted guys curbstomp them
Only real dificultly was the paints drying out when you were out on mission, at least in the warmer times, that and good painting light at night, the TOC usually had the best lighting so if you had duty there, you could usually get some painting time in.
If something is important to you , you will find a way.
