Can someone give me a reason why This thread was locked? What breach in the TOS was violated because there was no warning, no reason, and no statement given. This is similar to Jimsolo's mysteriously locked thread and both of us would like some sort of answer to why it happened.

Because the Mods and Amins fear you'll hack there accounts, so are doing everything they can to reduce a threat to there power over Dakka.

But the 2nd thread had nothing to do with the mechanics of hacking, only the ethics of doing it.

Why is that against the rules?

Where in the TOS are we not allowed to speak about crime?

There are posts about slaughter, murder, religion, sex and drugs, and suddenly everyone is up in arms about an issue that is probably the most pertinent and prevailing on the internet?

There's not much to be discussed about hacking as most people know it's bad, that's probably why it got locked.

You're likely not to get an answer to this question in this thread, it's simply going to be locked - In the TOS you keep referring to, it clearly states who to contact if you have exactly the problem you have (at the bottom).

Furthermore, this is a privately operated site and you and the administrators have no contract between you - they are free to lock your threads for absolutely no good reason at all if they so choose, and you're free to walk away at any time if you don't like that arrangement. Although it's good business to be consistent, the fact is locking a thread for being in bad taste is subjective, and theirs is the only taste that matters.

Probably work

For what it's worth, it wasn't a very good thread for Dakka anyway. I've noticed that threads of a technical nature don't tend to do too well here.

As far as your gripe about percieved entitlements in the Terms of Service, well, I suppose all the money you had to pay when you signed up does give you some clout over being able to post whatever feels good.

O hai.

I had no intention of citing an entitlement I am not deserving of because you're right, I don't have one. I merely wanted to know the reason why they thought it prudent to lock the thread.

If I don't get an answer, it's their right.

I don't see a reason why I can't ask though.

Since your last hacking thread before that got locked, and you started another one, you shouldn't be surprised that it got locked as well.

Especially since by your 2nd and 3rd post you already turned the subject back to the same thing the original thread got locked for. It should really be obvious why it is locked considering it went like this: "I had a thread about hacking criminals, it got locked, so here is a thread about the ethics of hacking.........criminals".

Consider yourself lucky that you didn't get a bigger consequence than a locked thread.

Your first thread very clearly seemed to ask for assistance in helping to steal via hacking...as though you were either looking for information on how to do it or someone to actually assist you.

Asking others for help to commit any crime is never going to be allowed on this site.

Your second thread, given the content of your first thread, appears simply to be a thinly veiled attempt to re-skin the original thread's concept so that you can see those who reply with knowledge about hacking perhaps so that you can contact them privately. In addition, the off-topic forum still generally needs to be about an actual topic of discussion. I'm not going to try to say that there haven't been complete theoretical 'what would you do?' type threads before in the off-topic forum that weren't locked (because I'm sure there have been plenty), but in general we do try to restrict threads even in the OT forum to discussing actual topics of substance that people replying have some sort of touchstone to comment upon. So if there was a particular news story about hacking activity that you were asking peoples' opinions on, then that would generally be more acceptable, than simply saying: 'what would you do if you had the ability to hack?'

However, given the content of your first locked thread, for the near-future, pretty much any topic you try to start involving hacking is probably going to be locked.

Very well, I meant no offense, the 2nd thread was genuinely about the ethics of it, but that's just my word and my word means little.

Thank you for replying.

Hacking is ilegal and immoral. Its like opening a thread "hey whats wrong with murder?"

I think it was just the fact it seemed so horrifically thinly veiled that got it locked, in the end.
