My favorite game from GW is Necromunda. I started playing back when it first came out and was instantly hooked. I picked up pretty much everything they came out with for this game and painted up enough stuff for the numberous factions that I could field a good number of them. My favorite guys for these are the Van Sarrs, but the Eshers arn't bad on the eyes. I've never picked up the extra ones they came out with after the revamped second edition rulebook, and wasn't a big fan of some of the changes, so I like to stick to the old second edition 40K style play, and house rules for what we found to have issues with.
My second favorite game from GW is Space Hulk. I picked up my first Space Hulk game just right before the start of second edition. I picked up a few more after that, and then eventually got into collecting more and more, and adding in the Rogue Trader stuff, along with learning more and more of how deep the stories and background really got. It wasn't pretty, but it was pretty interesting, especially when you boiled down the game to tactical and small unit level stuff.
I like some of the older stuff that came out from the sculpters through the years that did work for them, and have followed quite a few of the past game designers, and am appreceate thier efforts and work in making the game fun back when they worked thier.
I follow most of the names work and find that thier experience gained from working for GW has helped them to develop thier newer and varied games as they went on to work for PP, Mantic, Alien Dungeon, Studio McVey, and anyone else I didn't mention off the top of my head.
Aside from jumping up and down and going crazy over some of the same retreaded ground over and over, as GW continues to pull thier gak, I'm going to throw it down on the table and say that I think Only War is a pretty good looking game and that some of you did a pretty good job in adding to the material.
This is some of my positive, along with the fact that I'm going to go on back and dig out a few RT era orks and try to paint up a small ork force of that base set that originally started me on in on 40K.
I might even pull out some squats and start a squad and a leader for them, then dig out my Rogue trader book, or see if they can fit into FF's stuff somewhere.
Other then that, This is my attempt to divert some of this gak that I've started seeing on a continuous basis that's just getting to the WTF are we doing phase.
How about you?
Lets hear some positive from you about your gaming. I used GW, for a start, but lets hear about your positives. You got a new game? did you put together something new? did you find a new game?
Some other positives NOT having to do with GW, for me, are that I'm going to put together a few more Warmachine forces, and a crazy Malfaux faction from Molly and her undead kids, as well as dig into this Infinity stuff that I have with the Adriana.
How about your stuff? What do you have going on?
Edited to remove the GW centric focus.
I took GW out of the conversation in the title. I just want to see some other positive stuff about anyone elses gaming out there. Lets see what's going on.

So if I am understanig right you want positives about GW. Well here it goes I started abouttwo years ago playing 40k I have played maybe ten games. My Job keeps me very busy. I didnt like 5th edition but have enjoyed 6th. My wife who is not a gamer has gotten into playing 40k. I started to be able to spend more time with my sons age 24 and 26. I love the models and buy more plastic than I will ever paint. I also play Fantasy. A lot of people complain but seems in my area at least lots of folks love the fluff. Play the game at my local store. Continue to buy and we have a thriving community.
Warmachine I have played it twice like it but its not the same game.

If it's confusing, I apologise.
I'm posting this thread for just fishing for something positive about GW, or gaming in general.
If GW games have totally crapped in your cheerios, then any other game you want to talk about.

Some positives:
1) I just got the 98th Shadowsword FW produced, new in box, for cheaper than the current FW Shadowsword kit. My superheavy tank collection now has a proper command tank.
2) I just got my new Hydra turret to go with the OOP Hydra emplacement terrain, so my aegis line + quad gun will be infinitely cooler than the plastic ones everyone else has.
3) My modeling to-do list includes a Marauder Destroyer, Minotaur, OOP Lightning, and OOP Vulture to look forward to, and no matter how much GW screws up everything I still have my awesome models.
4) X-Wing is fun and I look forward to playing more of it.

Well I've been trying to expand the game horizons at a game store I frequent. Been introducing them to X-Wing, Judge Dredd and BattleTech. As a result I actually have a reason to paint the models that come from the Btech starter. I've been expanding my experiences as well, getting into board games and Infinity. I've been making a play it painted promise to myself to get more paint on my models, so I'll see how long that lasts. Unfortunately, due to my schedule it's hard for my to get Warmahordes games in. Sold off my nids and dwarves to focus on warmachine, hordes, infinity, Judge Dredd, btech, my marines and what little I want for my ogres.

I've enjoyed this hobby for nearly 24 years now. Over the last few years, I've begun to enjoy painting more and more and GW models are a blast to paint. I can actually field models I enjoy playing with now and they do reasonably well (Harlequins in particular).
Ironically, despite all the griping (including myself), we still had 5 games of 40K going and 2 of Fantasy at our FLGS yesterday. I've actually seen an increase of players since 6th edition.
Wargaming in general has been a nice getaway for me over the years. I can sit back, move my painted models around and b.s. with whomever I'm gaming with and relax. My wife knows where I'm at and doesn't take issue with it (she just prefers to see things I buy get painted rather than sit in a box).
All in all, while I'm not happy with GW pricing or generally how they are handling 6th edition, I'm happy with the painting and generally hanging out rolling dice.
|
No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

Well, I have been wargaming for far too long now and at the moment the hobby as never looked stronger.
The quality of the latest minis continue to astound as does some of the accessory terrain pieces. You can play in any scale from 54mm to 2mm with any one of a myriad of rulesets. Conventions just seem to get bigger and better.
If you ignore GW and all the hand wringing and doom saying about it, there is so much out there to enjoy.
Playing with toys has never felt so good.

Anyway, my daughter is starting a Tyranid army. We put together 3 Warriors, 12 Termagants and 3 Rippers (spreadloading the "two" bases' worth that came with the 'gants and warriors, because I think four per base is plenty and they accidentally gave us 2 large bases in the 'gant box, the filthy swine!) last night and she's hoping for a hive tyrant for Easter.
I've been playing a lot of X-Wing lately too. I can't wait for that expansion.

I enjoy the lore and fluff in general of 40k and fantasy. Even if Im not painting I can read a book in that universe.
I can still throw Space Marine in my xbox and get the same joy out of it that I had the first time I played, which is what introduced me in the first place to warhammer.
Ive started to expand a little into other systems, there is alot out there to paint/play, and I like that about gaming in general.

I've been loving getting my rules from a different company than the one that makes the miniatures I use. It's awesome that I can concentrate on what the figure looks like and use the rules I want to represent it on the table top. And that all the miniatures I buy stand on their own merit without needing rules to make them valuable in game terms. And that all the rules I play are not compromised by the need to sell more miniatures.
A "Sell me rules, or sell me miniatures-- but not both" approach has revitalized my hobby completely. I totally get why this has been the norm for historicals for decades and am glad I wised up and applied the approach to fantasy and sci-fi as well.

As my wargaming group has fractured (we used to all work together, so it was easy to schedule games weekly), my wargaming time has declined. However, I've been running a regular (4 years now) roleplaying group each week. We played D&D 4e (and loved it), as well as some Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (2e--which was awesome!), Deathwatch (fantastic game, but not the right 'tone' for my group of players), and GURPS. We are now playing Pathfinder and having an amazing time with adventures from a fantastic company.
I finally went to GenCon last August (since thinking about it as a 13 year old in the eighties) and had a blast. I dressed up as a 40K priest (complete with chainsword) and got a lot of nice recognition from loads of people, including the friendly guys working at the Forgeworld booth. I finally picked up my first Forgeworld models (I was so intimidated by the prospect of getting a miscast replaced internationally).
My father was recently diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer, so it's been really emotionally rough on me, as we are very close. However, my regular gaming group gives me something to focus on that's enjoyable each week. I've also gotten back into modeling and painting, as it is a wonderful way to distract myself from my troubles for a few hours. The orks have always been my favorite army, and now that I'm more comfortable about Forgeworld products, I've started adding a lot to the small amount I had assembled.
I've assembled a Mega-Dread, and a Warboss on Bike. I'm working on three Ork planes at the moment. I ordered one Forgeworld Ork Trukk, and liked it so much I've decided to get the other one and use pieces from both on three trukks. I also managed to get my hands on the Forgeworld Ork Sqwadron commander. I would paint some of these guys, but it's been so damp here that I'm terrified to prime anything!
I also finally got a copy of Crusade of Fire and the Dogfighting and Arena combat rules look like perfect minigames to play with my friends, and maybe even run at a local charity tournament.
I've always been an avid reader of the Black Library's stuff, and that hasn't changed at all. Other than the limited edition collector's stuff (grrr...) I pick up all of their new releases each month and generally finish them by the next month's stuff.
While I can't pretend that I'm happy with the 'business' side of Games Workshop, their creative side (the sculptors and writers) have made a lot of great things that have been bringing a lot of pleasure into my life.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

I've just rediscovered minis after a break of nigh on 20 years. To be honest, I'd kind of slipped into the habit of drinking too much in my spare time (not that I get a lot of spare time). But getting back into modelling has put a stop to that. It's slow going, but I'm starting to get a couple of units done, my wife is getting curious what the game is like, and I have an eye on picking up war machine too.

My Shaper and Weyland Corporation decks are looking awesome after the latest Netrunner expansion. I could probably splash some more NBN cards to get my glacier working faster (Woodcutter needs twenty subroutines NOW), but Shapers are currently in a really good place with Chaos Theory, Dinosaurus, and Personal Workbench. Now I just need to find a way to stop working during the tournaments...
The Machinations league is shaping up to be rather interesting, and a plague-ridden Gladiator is definitely a game changer for Skorne. If I end up going with Khador this time around (again), Vlad1 with 11 Berserkers is going to be even more ridiculous. April is going to suck a rather lot of course, as I get plastic Cetrati, light cavalry, the Mammoth, and a warlock unit in a two week period. My wallet will hate me, but my painting desk will be crying tears of joy.
I'm even fairly happy with the new WoC army book, and look forward to finising sculpting a Firewyrm to use as a Mutalith/Warshrine. Kind of annoyed at the Lore of Tzeentch, but being able to use Metal is pretty handy. Not sure if I'll be picking up a couple more boxes of Warriors or if I'll be throwing money at AoW.

As a positive post regarding this industry I tried to point out the positive side of things about GW shortcomings... It seems it has been confused with negativity? I truly believe the way things are is in the best interest of other small companies and that if even at first look may appear that its bad for GW, its not, they are still making its profits but not being super competent at blocking concurrence from a piece of the pie.
I find enjoyable the amount of companies that has been growing and created in the past years... So Yes I cannot think of anything more positive for us all... But you want me to talk about specific games rather than our hobby in the general? Why? I'm I offtopic?

My favorite GW game is Blood Bowl, I adore everything about it, the fluff, the game, the models.
Its fantastic- and it has a computer game based on it.
I do have Hordes but there are no gaming stores round these parts (and if there are they are either just as far, or no busses go near them so I can't get there).
Back home there was 1 gaming store only but miniature games were on the total decline for MTG, which I took up (and got sick of).
Now, well I don't know what I'll do after my completion of the Blood Bowl teams...

I buy miniatures regardless of companies, so for me it's all about good minis first... regardless of who produces them and yes last purchases have been GW brilliant nurgle demons.

Well, Navarro, yes, I'd say making a negative comment about a given company is off topic for this thread. I don't think your comment about GW was particularly over the top, and in some other threads I wouldn't bat an eye at it, but as a reminder, here's what the OP asked for:

On topic, for me:
I have two ongoing D&D games, for one. One most Thursday nights, and the other one Saturday evening a month. The once a month group is comprised mostly of a bunch of older friends of mine whom I met through the old Dakka league, all of whom but me have lost the time or inclination for the wargaming hobby, and who mostly only play computer games or get their gaming urges out other ways (one coaches and referees in multiple youth soccer leagues). Playing with these guys is always a blast and it's my way to see them regularly.
The Thursday night group is also comprised of old friends, most of whom I've been gaming with (primarily D&D) for ten to fifteen years. We're still enjoying 4th ed but are looking forward to trying 5th; one of the guys has been running some playtest sessions of that, too.
For wargaming, I'm still playing a lot of 40k. I loved 5th ed, but the changes in 6th (especially stuff like allies) have been a big refresher for the game and I've really gotten into the challenge of adapting my armies, learning new tactics, and how to face new opponents and new army types and combinations. This month rather than winning any tournaments I won Best Sportsmanship at the Onslaught GT, and my buddy Jamie and I got the Players' Choice (which is an aggregate sports/comp/painting/rules knowledge award) prize yesterday at a big doubles event. I've been accused (mostly by friends, whose criticism I take to heart) of being overly intense and competitive in the past, so I'm very happy to be recognized for being fun to play against.
I'm also looking forward to getting back into WHFB 8th ed. My Wood Elves are still in need of an update, but my chaos warriors just got a big deluxe new book, and I've signed up to be a filler player/merc for the Bragging Rights ETC/ATC-style team event this summer, so I look forward to getting back into the swing of things!
Also, Warmachine occasionally seems to want to call me back. I haven't played in a couple of years but I do still have a bunch of painted Cryx stuff that I used to enjoy. I had finally decided when I quit that I couldn't devote the time and energy to mastering the game that I'd want to in order to play at the level I wanted to, but Mark 2 really looks good, and I've been tempted to break out the models again and try a couple of casual games.

Super Dungeon Explore has been a lot of fun for me. It crosses into totally different types of gamers as well as younger ones. Basically I get to be 'Dungeon master' as I provide all the models so I get new games and people to game with, and I get to paint it all which I enjoy.
The Impact Miniatures Kickstarter and the Super 3D dungeon boards are also going to be on my plate this spring and I am super excited. The HYDRA release was a refreshing release and I enjoyed the model more than anything else in a long time.
Other than that, I got the Ramshackle Games Helicopter which is like a flying Ork Battlewagon, and it is a smart model... It is probably getting primed this week. I watched the sculptor design this model over the past year and enjoyed finally getting it. It is a fun model!
As for 40k, I have been playing mainly Battlewagon bash for 6th edition, so I was happy to fork over a pile of my money to Kromlech for his new armored dudes, got a unit of them ordered. I also have a unit of 2nd edition MANZ which I got via a trade at a store event which I will paint at the same time to bring my MANZ total up to 40.
NOVA just released registration, so I registered for the GT and the Narrative which I enjoyed last year. I will be hitting up tourneys as I can, but NOVA is the main one I take time off from work for. I have been using my FLGS token purchases I make when gaming at stores on ork bikers as well as some ebaying and a bunch of bikes I got from NOVA Sponsors last year (warstore, Spikeybitz)
Goal is to have 40 bikers, 10 Nobz, 2 Warbosses and a Wazdakka and run bikers at NOVA and other late summer Tourneys. I am looking forward to all the awesome events this summer.
I work in computers and am on a computer at least 12 hours a day for work, so any time I can unplug is awesome... So it usually involves travel, gaming or modeling. And there is a lot to be happy about in the gaming/Modeling arena.
