It looks like it could be fun, but I couldn't help but notice similarites to 40k. Humanity traveled the stars and then was cut off for ages, a powerful, mysterious being shows up to save humanity (the Emprah), and now they are beginning a great crusade of sorts to reclaim lost planets, using soldiers imbued with a bit of the Emprah's, oops, Traveller's power. At least they didn't refer to them as space marines.

Sorry, just missed this thread.

Haha I knew others would be reminded of 40k but I love this idea and cannot wait to hear more.

I dont see anything 40k about this at all... maybe its because I know better than to think 40k was first to use that scifi trope or maybe its because the comparisons are a real stretch. If anything it vaguely reminds me of warmachine in space (mainly the art style and alien concept designs). Looking forward to seeing more.

Looks like someone hasn't had their tea yet today. It has elements of all sorts of sci-fi things, but being a Warhammer site, it is more fun to pluck out those. And really? You don't see how "humanity traveled the stars and then was cut off and now begins a great crusade to reclaim the stars for humanity" has a hint of 40k lore?

Maybe I missed something, but I thought they were going to reclaim the Earth for Humanity since the last bastion of human power is the city built beneath The Traveler, but that's being a tad nitpicky I suppose. I freely admit that I'm pretty sure that if I saw that video without anyone making a direct reference to 40K (IE, the title of the thread and the first post ) I probably would've thought of 40K. With that said, I'm pretty sure that that basic background (great civilization, DISASTER, now trying to reclaim at least a fragment of what they once held) is fairly generic.

I dont recall hearing the words/phrase 'great crusade', and humanity only ever travelled the solar system according to the video, so no. No, I dont see much 40k in there.

Little bit of 40K(backstory), little bit of halo halo(gameplay), little bit of mass effect(artstyle).

That was my impression of it anyway.

Well I'm not that impressed yet. Actually, the opposite.
The artworks are nice. Very nice in fact. But that's all there is, artworks and prerendered movies. I think we're waaaaay past the stage that non gameplay visuals should make us piss our pants.

The rest is just usual babbling that actually says nothing about the game.
The only limit is our imagination? Really? Is this the worst pick up line contest? Come on, that is just so cheap.

There's a reason this is a "ViDoc" rather than an announcement trailer.

Judging from how rough the build looks, they're pre-alpha stages at least.

I wouldn't say they tell us nothing about the game either. Sure we have no hard info but some can be inferred from the video:

It looks like there's some kind of space travel or ship management system in the game. We get a brief screen that looks like a fleet of ships in orbit and different ones being selected.

The game (I'm guessing wild here) looks like it might have some player customization. They show several different pics and screens that look like they're appearance options for the player.

From the video I'd even propose they may be taking some story or game play notes from Borderlands.

I didn't say they did, I am calling 'reclaiming the galaxy from aliens' a Great Crusade in reference to the Great Crusade from 40k. You'll have to do better then a semantic argument.

I think you'd have to be pretty blind not to see the mild similarities, or incredibly obstinate.

I heard the most elite of the Traveller's army have a tiny sliver of his own gun added to the steel that forged their own.

Or I maybe am not so great a fanboi that I associate things with 40k even though other settings did it first?

I love the art and weather effects.

Did Bungie at least tip their hat to 40k (again)? Probably.

Did they blatantly rip them off? Probably not.

I don't see super Spartan soldiers making a return, I see the ever increasing theme of a post apocalyptic realm with a thread of almost biblical hope for salvation woven within. It's a pretty standard and solid story that is constantly retold, and the fact that it's in space just reminds us on Dakka of the realm we care about most. Maybe GW could sell their IP to Bungie next go around - it's not like they'd be uncomfortable....

Did it even mention earth? I saw venus mentioned on the 'Autolog' thingy.

Looks cool, i Hope it will be a swansong for this generation of consoles.

Michael Pachter predicted that the multiplayer will have a subscription model, possibly more akin to COD elite than a typical mmo.

Personally i think there will be a kinda Prelude game for the current generation and then a fuller game possibly the year after on the next gen, that includes a port of the prelude game.

I hope the multiplayer not as crap as spartan ops.

Tip their hat to 40k again? When did they do so before? (I'm not a very big halo fan, excuse my ignorance).

I'm guessing the entire "Capture Young Kids and turn them into unhuman super soldiers"?

But that was more of a nod to the real world Sparta

Gonna need some more gameplay video to form more of an opinion.

Looking good so far. Anything that Bungie produces will pique my interest. They have a built up a lot of goodwill from Halo.

In the words of Bungie itself, Halo is: "Robocop and the Colonial Marines vs Predator and space zombies."

Maybe we can just say "this game and 40k have similarities" and leave it at that? I mean really, why is that line of discussion still running? Probably because Bungie didn't actually say too much in the video about the game Come on Bungie. Can't you see the mystery is tearing us apart XD

They've built up good will period. Bungie as a game maker, has long been able to foster the image of being attentive to the interests of their fans, and not being the money grubbing douches that many other companies appear to be. Any hate they may have incurred during the Halo days was pushed onto Microsoft one way or another. They've had a good image since the Myth games. Will that change? I hope not

Yeah true, but here's how the list on how the Astartes compare to Master Chief:

SMs:

Clad in the best armor available.
Indoctrinated at a very young age.
Superhuman.
Trained to martial perfection.
Defender of humanity
Zealous to a single quasi religious cause.
Were legion until broken by betrayal - later repaired by restructure.
The pinnacle weapon of a human empire.
Follow a written code.
Sons of the Emperor

Master Chief and Spartans:

Clad in the best armor available.
Indoctrinated at a very young age.
Superhuman.
Trained to martial perfection.
Defender of humanity.
Were legion until broken by betrayal - later repaired by restructure.
The pinnacle weapon of a human federation.

If anything, the SM's are Janissary Spartans - taken into the folds of a religious militarized cult and trained for war, where Master Chief is just a plain old spartan - albeit the first and greatest of his kind.
