Hi guys. I'm looking to buy a massive paint set. Either from vallejo or badger minitaire.
Has anyone actually tried the minitaire paints? besides the youtube peoples. you have to take there oppinions with a grain
of salt imo. since most of them are sponsored by badger.

input and cheapest place to buy for australia would be awesome.

Thanks

I have seen a few reviews here and there I think there was a great one on the PP forums. The YouTube review from Icheban painting was really good he did a great job of showing the strengths and weaknesses of the line.

Personally I use paints from just about every range. Why limit yourself to just one?

Hey,

Fellow Aussie here, I will happily vouch for Vallejo!

Like Darefsky I also use a few other ranges but I find for most colours Vallejo seems to come out just fine and has a range that is actually availible in AUS! (plus who doesn't love dropper bottles!).

Try the website: www.slavetopainting.com.au
Cheap paint, cheap postage, great service and situated in NZ so you will get the product quicker than from the states.

Hope that helps.

Other than having a couple of colors I couldn't find elsewhere I was not impressed with the Minitaire paints. They dry on the tip much, much more than any other paint I've used. Which I find very puzzling considering this is an airbrush company product. I had to use a retarder which I almost never have to do with other paints. Not worth the trouble when there are so many other paint options.

Personally I favor the Vallejo line - I've never had any problems with them. I also use other brands as well - like Tamiya, Testors, Com-Art, etc....

This. STP are brilliant and they stock all of Vallejo's paints which I've found are amazing to use. The dropper bottles are just easier to use and maintain and mean less chance of your paint pot drying out. Plus the fact the Kiwi shop often puts specials up (on average around 20% I think) on their range of products is an added bonus too.

Well that's not good Daf57. I think its just all hype. O I currently have alot of vallejo paints. Currently sold my GW ones. Just need a bigger paint selection now is all. As I'm doing some commissions for some people an need dem different paints. I've only been painting for about 1 year now. So I'm not as seasoned as most of you fellas :3 again thank you all greatly for the halp

While I'm at it. Does anyone no if there is a paint from w/e line that is for airbrushes. That is kinda like the nuirgling green and straken green. I need these 2 so badly for air brushing as im doing some really cool effect for nurgle marines with them + red pigments.

ty alls :3

Once more your answer would be Vallejo. They have a specific line of paints designed for being used in airbrush called Model Air. They could have the kind of colour pigments you're looking for but I wouldnt be 100% positive as I don't airbrush.

Vallejo and Minitaire are both great. My Minitaire set arrived a week or so ago and I've really liked the 30 or so colours I've tried now. At $135 or so for the 80 paints (+$20ish delivery) it was a great deal, but not sure what deals you can get now.

Web Airbrushes is where I got my Minitaire. There may still be a delay on shipping since its in high demand. I also got a Badger Krome in the same order and damn, it's a lot better than my cheap Chinese clone ; p

Wayland Games in the UK (and the now defunct Maelstrom) is where I got all my Vallejo. They're substantially cheaper than the Aussie sellers from what I've seen, the site linked above is $3.90 compared to ~$2.70 in the UK.

If you're going to airbrush at all, I'd highly recommend either VMA (if theres a VMA set?) or Minitaire which is also designed specifically for airbrush use - by an airbrush manufacturer, and they can both still be brushed on (arguably better for this as thin = good). If not, VGC or VMC are both good too. Overall I'd recommend Minitaire - it's a great set and the pre thinned colours with a much more uniform consistency are very nice to work with. If you get the Minitaire set and then cherry pick colours from the other ranges, you'll be set. I'd already moved away from a lot of my VGC and VMC colours to their VMA equivalents, and I'm doing the same again towards the Minitaire paints.

If you live in Perth you can drop by and have a gander at them.

That is sort of by design. They wanted their paints to be dry as fast as possible, though I haven't had any more difficulty with tip dry with the Minitaire than any other paint. Oddly though, some people had said similar about some of their FreakFLEX paints...though a lot of other people haven't had that problem - and prefer the way they behave.

Either line of paint is fine though. I like the Minitaire, as so far each bottle I have had the need to try out so far has been the same consistency right out of the bottle and hasn't needed any form of diluting at all. Vallejo does tend to vary a good bit from bottle to bottle, and they need thinning from time to time. They are also almost twice the size as Vallejo (30 ml versus 17 ml) for the same price.

VMA are great. But they stock mostly earthy, muted colours. If you want brighter, more luminous colours, you'd have to dilute your own with the VGC or VMC (Game Colour and Model Colour, respectively).

Just a warning, though, Vallejo colours don't seem to play nice with non-Vallejo thinners. I've added some Tamiya thinner to my Vallejos with disastrous results. Water seems to be the way to go with Vallejos.

Only real difference between the two is Minitaire was going for a uniform consistency in their paint formula. The Minitaire stuff is targeted at Miniature painters specifically I know Chung and Les from my Malifaux group and they helped get the line going for badger both guys are legit on reviews of any product..

speaking as someone that bought the entire (old) GW line of paints in one go, I would suggest not buying an entire paint line at once. you will end up with a lot of colors you simply never use and that offsets the savings you get for buying in bulk. plus, it commits you to a single paint line and not every paint from a given line is a winner. mixing and matching across paint lines is the way to go, imo. buy the best/what you need from each line as you need them. easy enough to pick up a few more bottles down the road as your needs change. in the meantime, you don't have a pile of bottles collecting dust and you can be flexible when someone recommends a particular paint. just my 2 cents

I ordered my full set of minitaire, though still waiting on it. I feel varl and others are right that you shouldnt commit to just one paint line exclusively. I only intended on getting the ghost tints, but the 50% off full set was just a steal for the amount of paint I'm getting (80 paints at 30ml each vs 17ml for any vallejo or 12 for GW) so for 1/2 off the warstores price for VMA colors Im getting more paint. Good deals.

But that doesn't mean I'm giving up my P3 paints, or my model colors as some of those colors just work for what I need them to do. (P3's opacity works well for me on their jack bone and cygnar blues, all my orks pants are painted with coal black) I will probably give up some of my VGC and GW old pots when/if these colors come in and work the way I want them to. It will depend on how well I can use various techniques on them.

If your painting on commission, assuming your doing it for pay (if not at least cost) finalize their color choices and make them pay for the colors they need you to paint with. I did this for a few friends and my paint range increased significantly. After a while you simply reorder paints you run out of.

Speaking as someone that bought a full set of Reaper paints at about 75% off, I have no regrets. I never have to go to the store when I think "I need color X", which they may not have in stock. I can just try it right off the bat, see how it goes, and stuff it away for later if it's not what I'm going for. I've also only got to use about 1/4 of the whole set before I've broken even, which I've done at this point. The rest is essentially 'free', and I've got a lot I can experiment with now available to me. I'm not a fan of all the colors (not a fan of the silver/gold metallics), and I have a few Vallejo paints around for that purpose, but the bulk of it I'm happy with.

It all depends on the deal you're getting. I got a ridiculous deal on mine, so it worked for me. If it was 50% or less off, though, I'd probably pass and go for individual.

That's what I thought aswell... :/ either way I just bought like 150 bucks worth of paints, pigments, brushes ect. But I kinda agree with the example. I'm painting plague marines.
I feel like painting imperial fist now. O woops no yellow gotta order more paints wait 1month But I see the arguement on both sides... tuff decision tho.

FWIW Slavetopainting is good but if you are looking for paints quickly in AUS.

Check out Irresistibleforce, The Combat Company, Defiant Gaming, Phoenix-Forge.

All of them are Australian based companies, that are awesome, and i think they all stock Vallejo, at least most of them do.

Were they all listed as in stock? How long ago did you place your order?

One order from Wayland for me was a little annoying. After 2 weeks of no update I emailed them about it, they removed a couple items from my order (and refunded them) then sent the rest the next day. So they might need a prod after a while if something breaks.

I ordered the Miniatire set from Amazon but am wondering about pulling the plug :-/ as folks who ordered wayyyyy before me are still waiting. But the full set of Vallejo Air is soooooooo much more money . Is there a more limited set of Vallejo Air to get started with, maybe?

Not being able to thin Vallejo with anything other than water concerns me, as I had planned to use airbrush medium...

I also don't want drab colors, as someone mentioned the Vallejo Air line tending towards. Wish Minitaire would just solve their backlog problem...

Minitaire is a new line with high demand, they're making them as fast as they can hehe. The new demand is justified though, they're a great range - worth the 6 week wait it took for mine to ship.

You can thin VMA with standard thinners, I use Vallejo airbrush thinner when airbrushing them. If you want more vibrant colours you definitely want Minitaire though. I'm *really* happy with the vibrancy of the colours, they have some beautiful colours in the selection.

Thank you all for your current input. I currently have vallejo paints. About 10 That I have used on my Forgefiend and they are fine to thin.
I use the vallejo paint thinner, and its awesome for it. I don't need to really thin the VMA but for my game colours I add thinner and it works amazingly.
