I admire Eristede Kell. That's a man whose dedication I can relate to. The way he died spoke volumes about him.

Are you a combat veteran? A sizable amount of Dakka posters actually are, and if that was the case I could understand, but otherwise that's something that weird to feel you relate to.

I have psychiatrist to talk to and I have had bad experiences when I talk about my personal history to regular people, last time I did was in a college class were it was turned against and made to make me look mentally unstable individual with violent tendencies, speaking about it on the internet seems like an even worse idea.
Just to be clear I’m actually a peaceful person under normal circumstances, it’s just that my circumstance up until a few years ago were not normal. I apologize for hijacking this thread but you asked a question so you deserved an answer.

I admire marduk.

although he is a "traitor" he works diligently at his job, he has unerring faith in his cause, he takes crap from all of his higher ups with silence. He has the book of lorgar committed to memory,
and beneath all of the chaos, he is as human as you or me. (kind of)

Ravenor. Utterly dedicated to the cause, but flexible in the way he approaches it. Willing to get his hands dirty with radicalism, but constantly doubting himself and his own motives. Loyal to a fault to his companions, and sometimes doesn't see their negatives when they have inadvertantly become a demonhost, but willing to put them down if and when it becomes necessary. Self recriminations galore when he makes a mistake, and especially when that mistake harms other people, and most especially when those other people are relatively innocent. Plus, how often do we feel isolated and locked away from the rest of the world? Ravenor deals with that on a daily basis, knows he is a ruined wreck, and still refuses to give in and eat a bolter round.

Never heard Agron described like that. Xarl reminds me of my best friend growing up, especially that story with the dog, he had one hell of a mean streak to him, but he was still a loyal friend. From what I hear he ended up spending time in jail.

When my family moved I met another friend just like the old, we use to think we were the local toughs even though we were like ten, wondered around the nieghborhood breaking things and fighting with other kids, it was fun but by the time I reached adulthood I felt spent and worthless, like I needed to prove my life was'nt a waste and needed it to have meaning.

Uh... hm. That's rather hard.

I guess Sergeant Criid from Gaunt's Ghosts, and the Colonel Regina Kasteen from the Ciaphas Cain series were most relateable to me, personally.

Given that the overwhelming majority of 40k is giant hot sweaty musclefreak dudes with tiny penises fighting giant hot sweaty musclefreak dudes with tiny penises / giant hot sweaty musclefreak genderless fungus people who smell funny / giant four-armed bugs who want to eat you / psychic ninja space elves from space / etc.... and that most of the writing sucks... it's a bit hard for me to empathize or see myself as being most of them, unless you define empathize strictly as "be able to understand their point of view"; in which case yeah, I understand, I just find myself caring very little about it.

Edit: By the way, that last paragraph was intended as a joke...

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

[edit: Let's get back on topic... removed the off topic portions...]

REGARDLESS, sadly, there's not really many characters in 40k that I "see myself as". The ones that I do often are minor characters. The main characters, frequently, are rather boring.

I don't find Alpharius/Omegon to be an interesting pair of characters. If I had to pick a primarch I'd probably go with one of the loyalists. I don't empathize with the traitors at all, they're all really pathetic to me save the ones that were forced in to it.

I thought there's been a rise in major female characters recently. Mostly due to ADB, come to think of it.

Cyrene and Octavia were both main characters. Lotara in Butchers Nails and Betrayer is probably one of the most badass starship captains around.

Other authors are getting in on the act too, Amberlay Vail is still fun, plus 'Beta' from Pariah.

I'd say the days really have changed from the times there was nothing but shallow, cliched female characters in the Black Library.

Hrm... sorta.

While I'm glad to see female characters take center-stage, or at the least sharing center-stage with male protagonists, in BL fiction... eh... a lot of the female characters are, on the page, largely indistinguishable from their male counterparts.

This is both good and bad.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
