With the release of the shiny Horus Heresy Codex, I realized that my plastic crack addiction needed a little something more. As the Heresy books were what got me into the hobby in the first place, I decided to create a Sons of Horus Army. I'll post up finished pics of my models here, as I've now been painting them for about a month and a half:

The dark green is an interesting approach, painting looks good, though maybe a little dark for my personal preference.

You may want to touch up your eyes/lenses with more of a "hotspot" For some reason they just don't have a focal point, IMO it makes them look like "coloring outside of the lines" rather than an actual glow effect.

"You are like a son and together we have all but conquered the galaxy. Now the time has come for me to retire to Terra. My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words came from mine own mouth. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.

I used the citadel water effect, added some red paint initially, added some black later to darken it to the colour I wanted. It took a few tries to get (and takes several applications as the effect dries) but I'm pretty happy with the result I've got now.

Many thanks, I try to get around 1 marine done a day, granted I get distracted by X-box... It's a pretty quick process, 18 steps to paint each model that takes around 5-6 hours a pop depending. I have been trying more deliberate battle damage (i.e. cutting the model with a hobby knife) though none that is really noticeable on the figures that are posted so far. The one I worked on today (still have a little work yet to do on it) I think I may have gone over the top... we'll see, though.

He's a mostly solid kit. Legs and torso are connected, but the shoulderpads are put on by themselves, so I just replaced the stock ones with the SoH Mk IV pads

Well, my Necrons are green and my CSM are green, so I was sick of standard greens haha. For these, I use Dawnstone with healthy applications of Coelia Greenshade to make the dark green (without actually having to paint green). As for the hotspot, I've been trying to do that more recently (probably more noticeable on the Contemptor) but, at least on the Mk II and Mk III armour, it's a royal pain to get the brush in the eye crevasses. Normally I just paint it red, add a white streak, then use a red glaze over that. I've looked around for other techniques, but I'm incredibly impatient and most of them are almost as many steps as it takes me to paint the complete models. Do you know of any good ways to do it? I've been debating maybe trying orange in the centre (built up from a darker red) but don't have the paints handy at the moment.

Glad you guys like them!

What are the property taxes like on Blood Planet? Are there good schools? I'm looking for a change of scenery and curious if Blood Planet would be a good place to settle down and start a family.

Your paintjobs are gritty, grimy, and well-executed. That's a great shade of green, and the bases are really well done. The captain looks a little freaked out, but I think I'd feel the same way on Blood Planet.

Your color scheme is absolutely gorgeous. Amazing combination of solid colors, metallics, and weathering. Visually stunning while retaining the "darker" atmosphere of the Sons of Horus.

My only criticism is that some of the paint (especially around the eyes) is a bit thick - or rather that some of the details were done with a brush slightly too large.

In any case, they're great looking and fearsome as a group. Good job!

Sadly, I was trying for the softer, more cuddly side of grimdark

Property taxes are low, the Imperium is trying to increase interest in colonization, but sadly their efforts aren't working. As for the captain, I had no idea how freaked out he actually did look until I took the photo haha.

Many thanks, they're resin bases from Secret Weapon Miniatures, with a designed-in impression so that you can fill it up with liquid.

Aye, certainly agree with the thick paint in places. My biggest weaknesses in painting are impatience and colourblindness. The first makes me rush (i.e. too much brush on my trusty 000) and the latter makes it so I can only use out of the pot paints, for fear of screwing up the mixture when I run out.

I've been working on 2nd Tactical Squad (my list has 2x 15-man squads) and here are the results thus far from the last couple of days:

The colouring looks a bit off on the Mk IV, however it's probably just because they're 3 individual photos rather than a photo of the 3, when they're actually side by side they match (I think). I've also started adding more rust weathering along the metal trim on the Mk IIIs and, due to suggestions from a member of another forum, actually been taking my hobby knife and drill to the models for more realistic battle damage. A couple models in 1st Squad are done the same way (maybe 2?) but it's a bit more noticeable on these latest 3 (not to mention it's just a larger picture of them).

Hope you enjoy!

SUPER brutal. These are great. You could definitely use these either as pre- or post-heresy Sons of Horus.
