Secret Force Behind the Rise of the Tau

USA

Yeah I was wrong XD

After almost a year of rumors and whispers, Sony has finally revealed the worst kept secret in gaming: The PlayStation 4 is on the way.

At a lavish press event in New York, the company showed off its next-generation console, a system it hopes will lure people away not only from competing machines from Microsoft and Nintendo, but from smart phones, tablets and other new gaming platforms. It will be released this holiday season, though the company didn’t announce a price.

While the PS4 will feature improved graphical performance, Sony plans to use more than flashy hardware to appease finicky gamers. The system will highlight social aspects, such as the ability to share gaming footage. It will include a new version of the company’s classic DualShock game controller, now featuring a touchpad, motion controls, and a built-in ‘share’ button.

Other features to look forward to include much quicker startup times, the ability to browse live gameplay videos of your friends and a partnership with Facebook and UStream that lets people play with their real world friends, as well as people they've met in games.

The system will also feature a personalization option, along the same lines as Apple's Genius, that will download and suggest games it believes you will enjoy.

Mark Cerny holds the new PS4 controller (Credit: Frank Franklin II, AP)"As the system learns your likes and dislikes, ... you'll discover content preloaded and ready to go on your console," said Mark Cerny, lead system architect of PS4. "Our long-term vision is to reduce download times to zero."

The PS4 will also boast a robust, cloud-enabled network that let users sample games before purchase without waiting to download.

“What we’re creating is the fastest most powerful network for gaming in the world,” said Gaikai’s David Perry.

The company showed off a variety of games to demonstrate the system’s power and capabilities, including new entries in first-party franchises like Killzone and Infamous. And Activision-Blizzard, in a surprise appearance, showed up to announce plans for a PS4 version of both Blizzard's 2012 PC hit Diablo III and Bungie's upcoming Destiny. (Versions of both games will also appear on the PS3.)

Sony is hoping to regain its king of the hill status in the gaming world with the PS4. The PlayStation 3, while nowhere close to a failure, has failed to live up to its predecessor's numbers. Research firm IDC estimates life to date worldwide sales currently stand at around 77 million.

"This was a very disappointing cycle for them," says Eric Handler, senior equity analyst of MKM Partners. "They definitely lost market share. … Their whole marketing message at the time was 'we're the most powerful machine' but what the Wii showed us was … people want to buy a console that has the most entertainment value. Machine strength isn't the Holy Grail. So they've got an opportunity here to show they have an interesting, compelling product."

The system could also breathe new life into the PS Vita. Sony said its goal is to make all PS4 games transferable to the portable gaming system, letting players play when and where they want - even when other family members are using the TV.

"PlayStation 4 is designed to be a highly integrated platform," said Cerny.

Perhaps Microsoft will follow up with a reveal of their own work.

EDIT: And as a follow up to the previous PS4 Controller thread:

The Final design of the controller is really nice.
I might be getting this one, Any news on the DRM/No pre-owneds? IIRC Sony officially stated a while back they had 'no plans' to implement such a feature.

Looks like there will be no lock-out on used games, sensibly. I was expecting this, as it would hand Microsoft a massive trump card if their console had that feature over Sony's.

Eh, I said before I wasn't planning on buying the next generation of consoles, I'm planning on going the PC route myself, but if the price is right (I.E. - half the price of what the PS3 was on release), I might reconsider.

Not really "sensibly", it's Sony reacting to the flak that came out over Microsoft's "leaked" stats regarding it.

Fun fact: the used game technology is licensed from Sony.

Well, sensible to remain a contender to be my choice of next-gen platform at any rate - I buy most of my games second hand.

No backwards compatibility for PS4, apparently, which is less of an issue for me as I don't own a PS3, but with a stack of 360 titles next to the TV it's an opportunity for Microsoft to add a little incentive. In the end my choice could depend upon which machine has the most enticing software library come the first price drop; let the scramble for exclusives commence!

Yeah, but if you buy most of your games secondhand?

You don't matter to publishers or developers. The simple fact is that secondhand game sales are nothing but profit for the shops selling them. There's a reason for the rise of DLC on consoles, and it is an attempt to offset the used game market by making sure that there is a carrot to get people to keep the game rather than sell it back to GameStop or Game for store credit.

I only said it looks nice, the touchpad looks like it may require a pair of fing-longerers for the thumbs. However i cant say for sure until i've tried it.

AFAIK Sony only filed a patent for technology that locked out used media. Whether or not they licensed it is speculation on your part, or simply wrong. By all means provide evidence of this. Trawling patents is a standard business practise, similar to how they try to buy out all vaguely relevant URLs.

Sucks about PS3 games.. but either way, since i have a PS3 I'll get a PS4 unless MS does something amazing. I might wait till both are out for a year or so though.

Honestly I fear the next xbox will not be as powerful, I hope it is, otherwise I will have a tough decision of Halo or PS4

I was shocked when I found out the infamous trailer was supposed to be in-game, thought it was a pre-rendered trailer, next gen...... my body is ready.

I don't see Playstation ever ascending to the forefront of video gaming unless some great PS4 only titles come out. Isn't it too much of a hassle for a developer to make a product for PC, XBox, and PS4? Just thinking of Skyrim here, but the PC customers receive the most attention, followed by XBox, and apparently the PS3 version of the game is still nearly unplayable for some people.

It seemed a rush presentation to respond to the Countdown for E3 xbox is running.

Not sure if that was the best reaction, but I suspect the pricing point for the EU will be ludicrous again. Hopefully Sony won't come across as arrogant this time.

Although after saying that, I am very likely to be picking one of these up as well as a xbox next, as unless some kind of miracle occurs, Dynasty Warriors 8/9 will be PS4 only, and I have missed Disgaea this generation of the console wars.

Hoping for detailed EU release/price info now, and an actual launch day game list.

I wonder when Microsoft are gonna announce an even date, they have got some serious work to do. I expected them to make an announcement for an event the day after the Sony meeting to try and instantly steal all the thunder.

I heard that ps2 was pretty popular and skyrim was an xbox game first, xbox game second and a pc game third.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

I do buy most of my games second hand, but that's mainly because I play old systems as well as 360. To put this in perspective I have at least ten 360 titles that were either bought new by me or bought as a gift, so I'm by no means worthless to publishers despite the used market being important to me. Ultimately any advantage that one console has over the other could be a factor in deciding early sales.

My god, it's like they took my nightmare list of features on a console and made something with EVERY SINGLE ONE IN IT.

Please, PLEASE, Microsoft, don't pull the same crap or I'll need to start saving up for a gaming PC (although to be fair I should've already started saving up for it)

This is because Bethesda wouldn't know a good port if they were bitten on the arse by it.

The Xbox 360 version only came out as well as it did because it's basically a very underpowered and unreliable PC.

Bethesda couldn't be bothered doing any work on the PS3 port to make it work well with the PS3's divided memory (which makes load times for small files much faster, but makes bigger files slower to load) complaining "The PS3 has very difficult architecture to work with" (sounding very similar to the crap spouted by Valve) which basically translates to "We can't be arsed to learn how to program properly for the PS3, so we're going to give you a horrendously bad port". At least Valve came to their sense when it came to the PS3 version of Portal 2, which is on-par with the PC version (despite the lack of the level editor) and even comes with a free digital copy of the PC version, although it doesn't forgive the atrocious port we got of The Orange Box.

Simply put, these companies should either make sure the ports are good or not port the games at all.

An electronics outlet accidentally allowed pre-orders of the PS4 for £400. I would guess that would be the same figure in dollars. So it wont be as expensive as the ps3 was but still pricier than the 360 was at launch by a third.

Thing i hate about these new game consoles is the fanciness of the controllers, they're going to be really dear as a result. The wii was bad enough, then the wii-u and i dont doubt the dualshock 4 will be bloody dear as well.

The new Dualshock actually looks pretty cool.

Also, with all the new features of the PS4...Kojima and Psycho Mantis are going to have a field day with this.
