Hi, its my first tutorial ever but I'll post pics in a pit

1. Get some Cadians
2. Get some green stuff
3. assemble the cadians
4. shave the flak armour off
5. green stuff the the greatcoat on
6. remove the cadian head and get the pig iron heads
7, swap the heads
8. voila, cheap DKOK! have fun!

I'll post pics in a bit, but people can post their results here as well

Might I recommend not building the cadian with head first so it does not need to be removed later?

I like to use the head as a reference point, but perhaps blue tacking is better

Any pics for a WIP?

I actually have to agree with this. With the amount of time and money it takes (since your buying Cadians and Pig Iron stuff), you might just be better off ordering the actual models (especially since GW is starting to even prices out with FW since FW hasn't been increasing price as much as GW has been). They are amazing models too, better than I could ever do with green stuff...and by that I mean, I will completely butcher it most likely so I lose money on it.

Also, for some odd reason some countries starting a FW army is actually cheaper than starting a GW plastic army (like, Australia)...

By this point, you're just scratchbuilding. Paying for cadians and then basically only using their arms doesn't make much sense. Better to buy some cheaper third party stuff instead.

Or just buy the actual FW models. The absurd amount of time it would take you to do an entire guard army (probably of worse quality unless you're great with GS)... well, you might as well spend that time working an extra part-time job and buying the minis.

I really want to see the pics.
I'm in the middle of converting some 28mm WWII German grenadiers from wargames factory to Steel Legion, which I guess is quite similar to your method.

As the others have said, it is simply too time consuming and probably almost as expensive as buying as green stuff is not cheap.

An alternate way to really make it easier would be to getting into resin casting. Expensive in the short term sure, but way faster, easier and cheaper in the long run.

I'll just repeat what a few people here have said, but with pictures. Here are some of my IG Veterans with Wargames factory models, GW arms and pig iron heads. Good results for such an easy kitbash I think, and I don't think I used any GS (GS is expensive here anyway...)

Sorry for the quality, I just did them on my iphone.

Those look great Masterdoobie. Dig those a LOT!

Big difference between a kitbash like that and the extensive converting and modelling Emperorlives was describing.

But this is my method and my way of doing it

if I wanted to buy DKOK I would but I'm not a hipster, so I sculpt my own and it looks just as good

Pics please, im still on the fence about going for the official dkok to emphasize the bulk of the marines and am looking for convincing alternatives.

They look very awesome, in fact probably better than FW DKOK. But making an entire army of them? Man that would just be...yeah.

I think that you don't understand what a hipster or the hipster ethos is, because your comment makes little to no sense.

A hipster would be more likely to handcraft his own.

Also, the ones in the photos that masterdoobie posted ARE NOT the recommended conversion from the OP, but really nicely done, simple kitbashes.

The tutorials forum is for threads for actual tutorials...meaning WIP pics included with each detailed step, not just posting a general list of steps with finished pics of the models.

If you'd like to actually write up a tutorial for making these models with WIP pics, etc, then feel free to create another thread in the tutorials forum.

But for this thread, I'm moving it into the general painting and modeling forum.

nice conversion but with the pig iron heads they look more like British expeditionary force or BEF versions of the DKOK more like killer corps of essex its those tin hats that do it

For DKOK heads, you need these.

http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=126_149&products_id=1523
They are by the same company that makes the british helmet/gasmask heads above, so they may be a bit on the small size, but they're the only pickelhaube ( WW1 German helmet with spike) helmets with gasmasks separate heads that I've seen in 28mm.

This guy...

...put them on Cadians.

The backpack is from the warzone plastics. Which are so cheap that it's worth it just for the backpacks.

Depends on how you want the DKOK to look. The heads from west wind look completely different from DKOK. Different gas masks, and DKOK don't have the pickelhaube spike.

The heads that you would want to replicate DKoK are the French Adrian helmets, also available in from Westwind Productions. And as far as the filter style, add the hose to a back or hip style filter using either guitar wire or the corrugated line cast in pewter from another company that sells bases and such that I cannot remember the name of at the moment...

You guys may be right. Not sure what I was thinking. The heads I mentioned are not quite right

The french heads are here:
http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=126_149&products_id=1524

No pic, but I would assume they will be like these, but with a mask.

It has the correct ridge on the top, but it has a rim instead of the fritz style rim protecting the lower rear portion of the head.

Here's a DKoK soldier showing that the helment is kind of a mix of German and French elements.

Here's the rest of the WestWind gas mask heads.
http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=126_149&products_id=1523
The german ones might work, but I can't see a profile to see which helmet style they have and the gas mask has two side canisters.

I'm really not sure what would be the best head to use. Maybe pig Iron is a good choice? It's got a pretty close shape, and the gas mask has a center mounted canister which could be attached to guitar wire to make it look like the DKoK mask. Or maybe the pickelhaube helmet would be good with the spike removed and the front brim filed down a bit.

Whatever you decided, good luck to you!
