I started out playing IG, but pretty soon I picked up GK, Orks, Templar, Eldar, Chaos, SM, Blood Angels, and some chaos here and there. Thing is, I don't think I'll ever get around to fielding most of what I've got. I'll always main IG, but the thing is with all these new projects I feel like I won't realistically finish it. Me and my friends call this "the zone", or when you have too much damn plastic crap. What's worse, this has followed me into Warhammer fantasy, and almost into Warmahordes. I passed a will save and managed not to get into a second army with warmahordes, but sadly I've got 3 armies now for fantasy.
Also, as a side note, I eventually got around being a paint snob. I found myself spending 98% of my wargaming time painting and modelling, and that's not what I set out to do. This new phase reared itself in fantasy, so now I have two fieldable armies, with quite a few figures in them being unpainted. But still, they can be played with, and that's what important.
So how many of you guys admit to have way too much space taken up by plastic and metal crack? Whatchoo gonna do about it? Sell it? Store it?

I have tons of excess figures and bitz laying around the house. Hell, I have had a half painted Khador battlegroup since Warmachine first came out, and some Dwarven warjacks still in the packages, back when they were released.

You have no idea how much I want to. I blame my love of the DoW series for making me play certain armies. My freebooter ork army, and my Eldar army def came about because of how cool they were in the games.
I'm thinking of setting out to make a certain style of army and sticking to it. For example through my haggles and spotting of good deals, I've gotten like...18 wraithguard for less than 60 dollars are so. I've seen lists built around 20 of them, and while it might be super noncompetitive, it would still be a fun thing that nobody would expect. With this style, I've got a good idea of what I don't need, like banshees and the like.

I have everything GK and a bunch of Nids. I like to play both. I thought Necrons would be fun and started collecting but I don't think I'll ever get around to them. I think I'll just sell them but prob will not get close to what I paid so I have been putting it off.

I play Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Eldar, Chaos Marines, Orks and even have access to a Grey Knight army i started for my son when he comes to visit. Fantasy i have Vampire Counts, Bretonnians, High Elves, Orcs, and Chaos Mortals...as well as a lot of just random minatures that used to be useful to my armies but as example should go to a Beastman army .

I am in same boat lol been in hobby since 1990 or maybe a bit earlier. A lot of stuff i have is OOP. With new price hikes and half my income going to my Ex and things like that i still love the hobby but cant afford to buy new and or as much things to replace OOP... so i still for example would play my space wolves in Rogue Trader "Beakie" armor and such against an opponet lol. Now then 95 percent of all my armies are pretty much painted... but again OOp so not look as good or in some cases like my Vampire Counts... fieldable but not very good after they tore undead apart and made Tomb Kings and Vampire counts... same with my Chaos Mortals... i had Chaos back when they had daemons and such all in one... so I am hurting on some new stuff...
What i personally am looking to do is post idea army lists for my armies and list my collection and get ideas of how to build a 2000 point Space Wolf army before i commit and sell off the models i dont want to run in list... for each army. I then have ready to go X point army to play or maybe keep a couple figures for smaller or little bit bigger list. Extra funds i get would go to magnets and containers to transport my figures to gaming events and such as well as maybe a special "New" model that i might actually be able to afford one or 2 if sell off stuff i dont need.
I just dont see using them all and as i get older i just want to pull out my army list and play a friendly game with ... humm.. i will play my BA today instead of my Wolves.. pull out the container that has them with Army Builder List and play... that and maybe get a starter for War Machine in case i could pick up a game with some people at local game club.
NOW the other side... lots of minis fantasy and 40k give you a lot of choice for RPG games and GW minatures seem to fill a lot of roles rather well in generic side of things... so that something to consider as well... i dont RPG much and when i do its at a friends who has more figures than i do and the RPG materials... so, why do i need them .
Hope that helps .

Nonsense! While it might hold true for some models (like the damn 2e orks I absolutely can not get rid of to save my life), I prefer the look of the old models. Gives things a vintage look. Old school metal cadian and catachan models for example are usually pretty nice. I happened upon a few of the sitting variety of cadians, then threw them on my leman. Just gives it a nice touch.
Also, the old and terribly ugly models are great to pull out for the noobs who say you can't field them because they aren't GW.

Guilty.
Too much stuff to know where to start. But every journey starts with the first step, or something like that, lol!
I like the new stuff better than all the old stuff, that's why I keep buying the new releases, and i'm a gamer from way back when ( early 90's ), so I did have a lot of old stuff. Now my new stuff outnumbers the old.
I will stop collecting armies after this latest codex release, and concentrate on what I have... Untill Tyranids get a redux. Sigh...

Can't say it's the same, but I'm not too far from that. I have so much lying around it's a pain to ever move it all. Worse still it's not on sprue so I have to be SUPER careful with it. It's like handling and being surrounded by the most fragile glass.

Strange I never bought models I didnt play with and I always sell models , that will rotate next edition codex . I do have some realy old models , like old morodian las cannon hvy weapon teams , but only becaue they were cheaper to buy then new cadian ones . Only unused model I ever owned for a longertime were 3 extra marbos I got from GW. I ordered different stuff and they mispackaged it .I always wanted to sell them , but till 6th came no one wanted to play IG here with the army costing so much . Sold them in 6th because with ally everyone wanted to have some IG units .

I only started wargaming recently so I don't have that much stuff lying around ... yet.
I'm a gamer aswell, so I try to get Collector's Editions of games and well, those figurines also take up some space. The books take up some space. The figures I bought concerning other stuff like Neon Genesis Evangelion also take up some space.
So far I already had to magically create some space for my Necron army and I still have 2 lychguard boxes, 2 wraith boxes and a destroyer to cut and build. I'm trying my hard not to fail my will test and buy more stuff for more army (except cool bits from 3rd companies) before I finish painting what I have now, but I fear I'm on the same road you are.

Guess it's all a matter of opinion here, I love the look of a lot of the OOP Imperial Guard stuff. They look more how I would expect them to look and (call me old, I dare you) I actually kinda prefer metal as a medium. I know plastic is lighter and cheaper, but man up and lift ( ) and at this point the old metal models were cheaper for more than the current plastic ones it feels like.
But yeah, I have too much. Not all of it is 28mm even, majority of my stuff is close to an actual ton of metal 15mm and 20mm stuff for Sci-Fi (Tomorrows War) or moderns (Force on Force). 15mm is small and easy to store, but you would be surprised how heavy that stuff gets after you buy 90 models for a game all for around $40

Yes I have boxes of warhammer piled up. Got a whole tyranid army build ready to paint and its been in a corner for half a year. Boxes of dark eldar not even built yet still around from about 3 months ago. My desk is covered in random models, I have other systems also laying around a few dreadnought and battleship class ships from firestorm armada. A few boxes of dystopian wars and ive got more incoming with a few judge dredd miniatures! I like the feeling you get when you buy new models but i never get round to finishing any of them.

This is probably the only hobby I'm showing restraint in (because of experience with other hobbies). I knew going in what army(ies) I wanted to play, and have only picked up what I wanted to field.
Initially, I was going to play SoB (and if they ever release something new, my current army will collect dust), so I have a few Sisters and Uriah Jacobus, but once Dark Vengeance hit, I stuck with Dark Angels because they can ally with Sisters.
Now, I have a self-imposed rule that I can't buy anything else until I paint what I have. I can field 2000 points of DA with limited upgrades (I can probably hit 2500 if I upgrade), which has allowed me some flexibility in our 1500 point games. I still lose, but that's for another thread.

Seconded. I have ~10k of CSM, a good portion built but not painted, a lot of it is OOP - 2nd/3rd ed Rhinos, (metal) Khorne Lord on Juggernaut, old metal Raptors, etc. I also have more bitz than is reasonable or sane, lol. Some on sprue, some not.
I built a Draigo-wing army a while back (also mostly unpainted) using parts from several different resin/plastic companies & did a lot of Ebay'ing to get GK bits & again - ended up w/ way more bits than I intended & all these were off sprue, so they're sitting around in gallon ziplock bags lol.
I also have a DE Wych cult list w/ a lot of redundant models due to problems w/ the finecast blisters @ the time, so I have ended up w/ 15 Incubi, 3 Lelith models & 4 Archons. Since I wanted all the Wych models in the army to be female, I again went Ebay'ing & purched several wych torso bits & now have lots of leftover male torso's laying about.
Thats just full armies, I have random models that I've acquired over the years from people quitting the hobby - OOP metal DA vet sarges, old GK terminators ( w/ lightning claws!)metal legion of the Damned models (whose backpacks & pauldrons made great Chosen conversions). A buddy of mine moved & didn't want to take his Warmachine stuff, so along w/ the paints I wanted he gave me about $200 worth of Warmachine too.
Luckily I have a whole room dedicated to all this stuff so it doesn't spill out to the rest of my house. Makes for a happy marriage, lol.

Oh boy:
5k+ Tau - haven't used them in years, currently stocking up on stuff pending a new book.
4k+ Tyranids - half-built, doing lots of conversion work haven't ever used em, still need more stuff
8k+ Eldar - Main army for a while, disassembled for painting for a year now
2k+ Dark Eldar - Unbuilt (except for Tantalus)
6k+ Daemons - Current main army, haven't used them in about 6 months (been playing warmachine), half painted
~1k Chaos Marines - Allies for my Daemons, never used
~2k Grey Knights - Using Scibor Adeptus Custodes minis, unbuilt
~2k Pre-Heresy Forgeworld Marines - Unassembled
5k+ Ogre Kingdoms - Haven't played a game in about a year, mostly built, still need to buy more stuff, convert, and paint.
~150 Khador - Play these guys regularly, everything is built except my Gun Carriage (just need to paint it first) nothing is painted, but a lot of it has never been used and I need MOAR!
~75 Blindwater Congregation - Trying to fully paint them, slow progress...
25 Legion of Everblight - Unassembled, got it for a steal last week
5k+ Flames of War Fallschirmjager - No vehicles, some painted, mostly unassembled
~1k Flames of War Mid War Monsters - 4 boxes of British Boarhound armored cars, unbuilt
Malifaux - Dreamer Starter Box, unbuilt
Arkham City - I own all the models released thus far, still in packaging
Infinity - More PanO models than I will ever use in a single game, even if I supplied both sides with minis, even if I played a three way and I supplied all the minis...
Dreamforge Games - 1 Leviathan Crusader in box + extras, unbuilt (plus 5 Ada minis and 5 Feral Shadokesh minis)
I tried the "dont buy new stuff until I paint old stuff" thing, but I love a good deal (and I typically get my stuff at 50% off because of that).

I have to much stuff, likely.
I have a dedicated room for my wargaming/RP stuff, and a bunch of old stuff in storage.
At this point, barring occasional splurges, i only buy new models as tournament entries, and i'm trying to catch up on the ones i have.
I only have three boxes unopened (Nephilim and two Venom), but my unpainted list is just ridiculous...

The fewer armies you have the better.
Not only is it cheaper, but you actually get around to painting everything.
Also people who rotate too many armies and game systems seem to forget rules and are slower players. If you only play 1 or 2 armies you pretty much have your codex and stats memorized after enough games.

My experiance has been the opposite. People who know multiple armies can spot stupid rule mistakes and know the holostic game better than narrow specialists who often misread rules and duped by others. Who doesn't have SM stat lines and USR down by now? I can easily play Orks, SM, SW, IG, GK, CSM, and DA without looking at a codex for anything other than double checking named character stats... and I'm hardly the exception in my meta.

Agreed. Having multiple armies & knowing the rules are not mutually exclusive. No matter what army you play, the core rules of the game are unchanged. Then it just becomes a matter of becoming familiar w/ your army(ies).
As to the 'its cheaper' statement - most hobbies are expensive, so thats a moot statement. Also, some models are just cool & fun to paint, whether you have the corresponding army or not.

I'm drowning in plastic and metal crack. I keep telling myself I wont buy more till I finish assembling and painting what I have now, but I always cave in.
I did purge through some of the stuff I never used though, including all of my fantasy stuff (which ironically were my only 2 fully painted armies). I hadn't played fantasy since 2002 or so. I ebayed them, made some good money, then promptly spent it on more plastic crack. Le sigh...
