I still have, more or less, two WHFB armies needing to be painted for about ten years.

Less 40k stuff but still, loads of stuff.

Curse my inability to pass up on deals.

I have five armies and the only one near fully painted was bought second hand. I still have multiple boxes of stuff that hasn't been built yet, some of it three years old.

The great thing I love about 15mm is that I can order a whole army for my Tomorrow's War rule-set (so I get about $30 worth of models, and in 15mm that's about 60 or so), open all the boxes in the morning and have it based, painted, and ready to go by that night as opposed to 28mm (specifically 40k) where it took me a month to get my whole Guard army to a passable table-top quality

I have a lot of projects that are still no where near finished. I have CSM, Dwarves, a small amount of orks and VC, even some arbites for necromunda, all way to much to actually due at my current rate.

To put it in perspective Ive painted 5 figures since mid December, and 4 of those were for a friends zombicide.

Ive found it pretty overwhelming since Im a novice painter, just started using green stuff and drilling barrels and such, I guess its good that I dont play. I just like painting.

I'm in the same boat. I started about 6 years ago as a junior high kid with a bunch of friends in Fantasy. We stopped playing after a year or so. Eventually I picked up 40k 2 years ago, and I've been playing on and off. I fell for the BUY EVERYTHING desire and outpaced my painting considerably. Now that I have to move between different parents' houses and college, I have realized I need to consolidate. Here's the list.
Fantasy Orcs - 2k (most of it is being re-purposed for a 40k snakebite army. still have to sell some of the unusable stuff. stripping most of the models to primer)
CSM Khorne Army - 2k (sold off piece-meal to fund the next army... I miss my berserkers)
Tau Army - 5k (my main project. had everything painted, then bought more stuff. realized I hated the current paint scheme and stripped all of it. working on repainting everything for the new codex)
Dark Elves - 4k (my little brother's army. never had a big interest in playing, I think he just played because I played. he gave it all to me and I'm working on finishing up his paint scheme. 65% painted)
Guard - 500 pts (sold to my friend. impulse buy a couple of months ago. was planning on making a prison army. he's actually continuing the idea for me)
Skaven - 1k (another impulse buy. tons of rats. no idea why I even bought these guys...)
High Elves - 4k (given to me by one of my old friends that I used to play with. no clue what to do with these guys)
Eldar - 500 pts (given by the same friend. maybe exodites?)
Empire - 3k (bought off of the last friend who used to play with me because I couldn't bear to see them collect dust in the closet. the current idea is to create a Solland army trying to reclaim its province. hopefully going to make a P&M blog once I get started)
I am just swamped and have no clue what to do or what to work one first. I feel like I should sell some of these armies, but I really regret selling my CSM army a year ago. Plus I am thinking about starting a DAK FoW army...
In summery, plastic crack is whack!

I started out playing IG, but pretty soon I picked up GK, Orks, Templar, Eldar, Chaos, SM, Blood Angels, and some chaos here and there. Thing is, I don't think I'll ever get around to fielding most of what I've got. I'll always main IG, but the thing is with all these new projects I feel like I won't realistically finish it. Me and my friends call this "the zone", or when you have too much damn plastic crap. What's worse, this has followed me into Warhammer fantasy, and almost into Warmahordes. I passed a will save and managed not to get into a second army with warmahordes, but sadly I've got 3 armies now for fantasy.

Also, as a side note, I eventually got around being a paint snob. I found myself spending 98% of my wargaming time painting and modelling, and that's not what I set out to do. This new phase reared itself in fantasy, so now I have two fieldable armies, with quite a few figures in them being unpainted. But still, they can be played with, and that's what important.

So how many of you guys admit to have way too much space taken up by plastic and metal crack? Whatchoo gonna do about it? Sell it? Store it?

I have way too much stuff for sure. Building a Dark Eldar army, upgrading some chaos forces, rebuilding my Tzeentch chaos marine force, also some new daemon figs as well, the addons for my dark angel army and the figs I wanted to collect from the space wolves line. Also have the parts for the Ork and Tyranid armies I have recently scrapped plans for due to continued rising prices just making them pointless. This doesn't cover all the minis I have for other games that need building and painting, nor the general modeling projects I have or the 1/35 scale WWII dioramas I have planned and in progress, etc, etc.

I had a serious illness from 2003 until finally recovered and back to work near the end of 2010. During the recovery phase I built and sold off some 10 different 40k armies, painting half of them fully before selling and buying more to work on. After years of over stocking on projects I finally finished building ALL of the minis I had sitting around in my hobby room closet for so long. Now, after being back to work for 2+ years again my backlog is not so slowly growing again. Just the nature of the beast. Recently got around to building the following forge world kits I had scared up: Chaos decimator walker, khorne dread, slaanesh noise marine dread, chaos contemptor, mortis contemptor for my dark angels, 5 heresy era terminators, along with preparing FW weapons for a regular space wolf mortis dread. Just built my forge fiend kit and have built up and prepared the extra maulerfiend pieces to customize a maulerfiend for my tzeentch force using a tomb kings warsphinx as a base. Planning to also build a stock maulerfiend and use that kit's left over forgefiend weapons to customize a necrosphinx kit to be a forgefiend for my tzeentch force.

I know some folks who have *1* army for *1* game that they play and never have or plan to buy anything else and I just can't fathom it.

Up until recently I had far too much stuff. I had an army for CSM (2 armies actually), SM (x2), daemons, IG, necrons and vampire counts. I have now managed to sell most of the stuff I didn't play with much/couldn't be bothered painting and now only have 1 CSM army, a daemon army and the start of a HH betrayal army. I'm not planning on starting anymore armies until those three are finished. "Planning" being the dangerous word in that sentence

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Well, I had many bits lying around. So I came to the point to spend for each army I have a box (basicaly a box from a GW tank) to put all the stuff lying around inside. It helped me to gain an overview about the stuff I have.

I've tried to keep stuff clean and orderly. (whole armies in boxes) but flyers are making this impossible. I now have two dakka jets, one Heldrake, one Razorwing, one StormRaven, and one Valkyrie with no where to go. So they just sit anywhere there is a flat place to put them. Its really annoying actually.

For about a whole year, probably longer actually, I had 2,500 points of Dark Eldar on my shelf waiting for paint, whilst at the same time being in the middle of a Guard repaint of a comparable size. I recently sold all the Dark Eldar and am now a lot more on top of my plastic crack.

Which is not to say I don't have a lot to work on. I have a LOT of Flames of War stuff to both assemble and paint, about a hundred Guardsmen to strip and repaint, 2 Russes to put together, and I plan on blowing a considerable amount of cash on a Skorne army for Hordes. Life is good!

I have a good bit more than I need, but I also take it upon myself to sell off anything that doesn't get used after a while. The trick is to learn not to buy that stuff in the first place .

At the moment I'm finishing up my 5th Edition Imperial Guard army (the Jagdmacht), and I've just built up a Dark Angels army mostly using bits and figures from Dark Vengeance and Assault on Black Reach. I purchased a Necron army but immediately shelved it because I was underwhelmed by the modeling opportunities that it presented (never mind being turned off to Necrons in general after cutting my teeth in 6th Edition against Scythewing). I have a Dark Eldar army from 3rd/4th Edition which is partially painted and in desperate need of an update. On top of all of this, I've decided to start a new Imperial Guard army for 6th Edition. This is somewhat unfortunate, as I had been waiting for Daemons to drop and would have held off on starting a second Guard army had I known that they were coming out .

Only big mutants and chaos hounds would be wasted for a Lost and the Damned army now. You can run it using the Chaos marine codex and use all those mutants as cultists now. I have all of my old lost and the damned custom built mutants running as two large units of cultists in my Nurgle CSM army right now. My friends also let me use my big mutants (made up of LotR cave troll models) using the points out of the Eye of Terror book if I want to as well. Not like they are an overpowered or game breaking unit by any means, especially when they keep you from including a better elite unit.

Or maybe you can find someone with Imperial Armour Volume 5: The Sieage of Vraks and make a force up using the Vraks Chaos Renegades list using your Lost and the Damned minis.

I have 6 armies, to say that I have too much crap lying around is an understatement. I have infantry from each army that still need to be assembled, as well as boxes upon boxes of bits everywhere. A friend has removed all of his bits from the spruces I should really do that.

Got Dark Vengeance for Christmas and I loved the Chaos Cultists so I bought an extra two packets of them.... thankfully I had a carry case too so a lot of the models that I have put together from DV go in there.

But then I have my tiny Ork army which takes up some space in my case, only 8 Boys a Runtherd and some Grots and my Nobs sit next to my TV since they are too big to put in there.

Then I have my tiny Tau army which was my first army and I just put them in a muffin box and some of the models got broken and I'm kicking myself for it.

I repainted a stealth suit and a crisis suit(?) and I didn't have a case at the time so they are both by my tv, along with a terminator, 2 tyranids, a chaos cultist flamer, a helbrute and some Flames of War models.

I will get around to painting everything, it's just I've been ill recently so I haven't finished my Orks.

I did the whole "paint what you've got, first" thing - haven't bought a 40K model in a few years. I also haven't painted more than a quarter of what I had already snagged before I said "enough... for now," but that's more a measure of my sluggish pace than the imposing quantity.

Then Mantic rolled around with their Black Friday/Xmas bulk "random" sprues deal. Then I found Infinity. Then Mantic round two. Then a few units to round off a trio of simple, core-heavy fantasy armies for which the prior two sales had laid the foundation. Then FoW piqued my interest and I finally laid down the law... again - no new systems, no new armies.

I just got a dozen Reaper heroes/monsters to paint "just for fun." I could be painting for two years at quintuple my current rate and not run out of things to paint. I don't even really play. If it's something I'd like to work on and I find a good enough deal, it's just so damned hard to pass. I'm the same with modeling tools, as well - I can't count the number of <$5 "I could totally use this" purchases I've made that see the light of day less than twice a year.

It really lives up to it's name of being plastic crack.

I started with orks, and that wasn't enough I moved to tau, and then hell GK looked cool. Made a gk army, by this time I was a pretty good painter (after about 2k orks and 1k tau) So when I decided I wasn't a fan of GK anymore. I sold them and came out on top. I am now thinking diligently of what my 3rd army should be. I already have two rhinos so I figured why not space marines. Who would have thought it is such a tough choice.

As far as my orks go I have about 50 boyz painted, and about 53 unpainted. I am working my way there.

I used to throw myself into painting because it chills me out to a massive extent. And when I was single with too much expendable income and no woman in my life I accrued an insane number of models each and every month. I also took models off friends who were downsizing due to having women in their lives.
Now while my collection certainly is not the largest, now that I have a wife, and therefore less free time, and despite the fact that I am banished every Sunday to the FLGS and often to my painting desk in the study of an evening, I very much doubt I will paint what's in my collection let alone what I am continuing to buy.

I did recently sort it all out, and a list would be pointless as well as depressing but the way I am dealing with it is I have picked 2 armies each from 40k and WHFB and the rest is stored and catalogued, and I'm just concentrating on them, and only them. My imperial fists battle company has models from 4 different armies I've accrued, and stripped, original rogue trader marines mixed in with the current load of models, and is generally taking far longer than I would have liked. I should have listened to everyone who told me to avoid yellow marines like the plague...
