Well, I've been trying to make something about this.

Point wise, we can forget assault sternguard and assault marines. Bulky, not point cost effective...

5 SS/TH seems good, but I don't know what IC attach to them, really. The most obvious should be Vulkan, but then you've to tailor your entire list around him.

Tactical marines will shoot their heavy weapon at 6's, and are not amazing at combat, so they're a no-no.

An Ironclad dreadnought seems very good, with a pair of heavy flamers.

So, what I will add to a Raven, if I add something, is gonna be in this order of preference:

1 - SS/TH TDA, with Vulkan, and an Ironclad.
2 - Ironclad alone, Vulkan coming in a pod with some sternguard.
3 - Sternguard if the game is at a lot of points, and I don't need extra pods.

What about you?

You can use it simply as a gunship and put a 5-man Tac / scout squad inside for last turn objective grabbing
Otherwise, Vanguard Veterans are not bulky as you're not paying the 10pts jump pack upgrade if you're fielding them in a Stormraven

I know it can transport models but i think your better off just running it as a fighter, that is unless Death from the Skys has given you some way to keep flying and land your payload

I believe the new compendium gives the Stormraven the "Skies of Fury" special rule, which is just "Skies of Blood" renamed.

I'm curious however, if you use the Skies of Fury ability to disembark from the Zooming Flyer, and the Stormraven has a locator beacon, would the unit disembarking have to roll for scatter?

For starters, an ironclad dread and 5-6 th/ss termies. ;]

Later on, depending on what kind of a list I run, I might go just termies or termies+lysander or perhaps even just a combat squad that can deep strike on an objective while I use the stormraven as a pure gunship.

The point about null zone is good, but in general its very dangerous to put stuff in the Stormraven.

So wait, How do you disembark from a Storm Raven now? You roll scatter and if you dont get a hit everyone takes a dangerous terrain test? Is there a difference between the 18" move or 36" move?

No you simply deep strike along the flight path of the SR. If you cannot place a model (deep strike mishap) you lose the entire unit automatically. If you scatter at all you must make a dangerous terrain test for all models.

In hover mode, you should be able to disembark normally. And charge, as you are an assault vehicle.

This bit of rules is from the BA FAQ, I'd guess it applies to C:SM ravens as well:

Skies of Fury: If the Stormraven has moved more than 6", passengers can still disembark, but they must do so as follows: Nominate any point over which the Stormraven moved that turn and deploy the squad as if it were deep striking onto that point. If the unit scatters, every disembarking model must immediately take a Dangerous Terrain test. If any of the models cannot be deployed, the entire unit is destroyed, as per a Terrible Accident result on the Deep Strike Mishap table. Models that disembark using the Skies of Fury special rule cannot charge in the turn that they do so.

For a locator beacon to work, you need two things: Start the beacon on the table, and be within 6" of it. So you can't zoom on to the table and then use Skies of Fury to precision drop with the raven's own beacon. (Pre-placed beacons would still work) But on your second turn on the table, the last 6" of your movement should be in range.

Null Zone works in the Storm Raven? Eldar can't use Psychic powers in transport but SM can?

I think you're confused.

Null zone is an AoE, from the librarian, that is inside the raven. Like the combo that GK used last edition with lots of rhinos and a librarian in a centered land raider.

What eldar psychic power are you talking about?

I think the issue is that fareseer powers are targeted and the Eldar transports don't have firing ports.

If you look at the posts asking about ravens for the grey knights, you'll see that most of the advice is against putting units in them. This is because Skies of Fury is really just a more dangerous form of deepstriking, and if you go into hover every anti-vehicle weapon in your opponents army will shoot it. Now, C:SM may have some units that are better suited for cheap objective grabbing, but for what it's worth most GK players have been running their ravens empty, as pure gunships.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

It's a bit shame that they're not so great as transports. Jump pack troops at least should be able to use Skies of Fury more safely.

Ill put my small 5 man ML/Plas squad in it to drop on objectives late game. Cant justify putting anything bigger in it.

TH/SS are ok, as when the thing blows up 75% of them should survive.

I can see putting a nearly naked squad of assault scouts in there for late objective grabs

Drop pods are better ways of getting dreads into combat, and they dont come with a large chance of penetating hit.
