Thinking back to my 1st 40k game in 5th I wondered if what this real PITA guy was right.

The Mawlocs blast template can only hit the 1st level and nothing on the 2nd -- the same for his melee attacks? Seems silly especially for melee my huge model on the 1st floor can't melee guys on the 2nd floor when I can move where my talons to literally wrap almost totally around the model.

Can a Giant model on the 1st floor hit things on the 2nd? Can the blast/deepstrike on the Mawloc only be used on the 1st floor in 5th Edition? I know he can only Deepstrike on to battlements or the 1st floor in 6th.

Rereading the rules on melee that brings up another question that recently happened. My Termagants charged Terminators and totally surrounded them and at the time it was said if my Tervigone couldn't get into base contact so he couldn't fight. Well I know they were wrong b/c it says you only have be with 2" of a friendly model in base contact. Here is my after question tho. It says units that have one or models in base contact are locked in combat. So the Tervigone isn't locked in combat only engaged b/c it is with in 2" of a friendly model locked in combat. Can the Tervigone just leave its next movement phase b/c it isn't locked in combat but only engaged? Is engaged and locked the same? Doesn't look like it.

The back ground story if it matters.

Spoiler:
"That Guy".

I played that guy several times. It was my very 1st game(5th ed) and a league game at the store. I still don't know if he was right. The Mawlocs blast template can only hit the 1st level and nothing on the 2nd -- the same for his melee attacks. He was moving everything about 8 inches and when I called him on it he said that almost that exact thing you were told, "I am your elder both in real life and the game and it goes how I say it goes. You will respect me". Also at placement I infiltrated a unit of genestealers and decided to move them somewhere else and he said it was like chess once you placed a unit it was down even tho I hadn't placed anything else yet. At the end of the game we counted kill points and what do you know my very 1st game I had tied a veteran. When I went to get the league sheet a guy watching the game pulled me on the side and said recount you have 8 kill points of his units he only has 7 of yours. He lied about his total losses - what do you know it had never even dawned on me that someone would lie about their game. A real super more mosest unfunerest of guys (he is maybe a Nurglite even tho I saw no diseases and smelled no rot). I have a special Grey Knight list I keep that is tailored to use vs his sisters - (it took 9 months, 6th ed., and the next league before this guy played me again but it was worth it.). Tabled is all I can say. Go go Fortress of Redemption, Coteaz, Inquistor, 16 Jokearos, and 6 plasma cannon Servitors. He even complained at the start he couldn't win especially since both the Inq. and Coteaz had rolled ignores cover.

Close combat attacks, in 5th, could be allocated to any model in the uinit. THe rules for shooting blasts at ruined buildings have no bearing on close combat.

Your final parapragh has one major issu e- youre wrong on your assumption. You can make combat attacks if in base to base OR if you are within 2" of a model from the same unit who is in base to base. You didnt read the whole of the rule.

The tervigon cannot complate an assault move, as it is unable to get into base to base.

Nope I just read it -- pg 23 who can fight. That is why this came up.

"Durning its Init. Step, it is within 2" of a FRIENDLY MODEL in base contact with one or more enemy models in the same combat."

Friendly model is what is stated.

Hmmm....... NM you are prob right bc in the 1st paragraph,"You must determine whether or not a unit locked in is also engaged."

Right, however, to get into assault initially, one model from the unit has to get into base contact.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I was thinking you just couldn't assault but you would be engaged. But like I said it does mention it for units locked in combat models then determine if they are engaged. Doh oh well.
