The other day while getting an army on a table, another player noticed my scratch built deff dread and my converted dread from AoBR. He made a comment that himself alongs with others on dakka HATED models that were built or converted but had an actual kit made. This kinda came as an elitist remark. But I've gotta ask, anyone else feel this way?

Depends on the model. If it's obviously a hodge-podge of what the guy had home that he calls a "conversion" in order to save money then I'd be annoyed. Rule of cool is always in effect.

I tend to enjoy seeing conversions. Whether it's particularly extensive or a more simplistic kitbash (which I myself am more prone to doing) I find it just makes things more enjoyable.

For me personally though, the more important criterion is effort. I don't mind if somebody did something simply to save money, times are tough and it's an expensive hobby after all. I just like seeing that they tried.

My entire DKOK army besides the heavy weapons and one russ is non-GW. I hate the copy paste of all the armies 40k. Now that GW doesnt host tourneys like 'Ard Boys there is no reason to have all-GW models. I would rather see an army entirely kitbashed and unpainted than a well painted GW army. So much more flavor to the strange things people can come up with for models.

I've always noticed the exact opposite...people love it when someone gets creative/artistic and scratch builds or converts something. If done well, its much more impressive than doing a paint by numbers model. I'm still sad they made a battlewagon model, I loved it when it was in the codex with no model and everyone had to scratch build. There used to be crazy orky wagons all over the place. Ah, the good ol' days.

A deff dread is SUPPOSED to look scratch built! I sort of understand the criticism, especially if a model is sub par and since GW's ork kan's & dreads are fabulous...but orks are nothing if not original and creative! As much as I like the battlewagon model I'll probably never get one because it's uniqueness looks JUST LIKE the next army's unique wagon. I just don't see this critique as valid - especially concerning orks.

I'd like to add my orks are based off the idea of stealing imperial stuf and looting it. I have some meganobz that have termies for skeletons. they still get built up to meganob size, but I love the idea of looting weapons, tanks, dreads, anything. I make sure it fits to the size of a model, then make sure I like it.

There are different aspects of this hobby, modeling, painting, and the actual game. Different people like different parts. Stuff that people put work into is fine. Which is all I've personally seen. If someone wanted to use cheap junk that looks nothing like what it's supposed to "counts as" I'd have an issue with that. Or people using conversions to blatantly MFA. Rule of Cool obviously applies, and forgives many sins.

One of the things I enjoy about this hobby is two well painted armies squaring off against each other. Some armies, like chaos and Orcs, I expect to have custom work done on them. I lost a game to an orc player fielding 4 battlewagons, each of them different. And it was awesome.

orks are supoused to have conversions /scratchbuilt stuff the aobr dredd is a good and easily converted one.... or for a example how should we field looted wagons then? neither FW or GW have made a model for it.... so loot!

That being said, I notice a large percentage of 40K players that sound like the comic book store guy from the Simpsons.

In my early days as a grunt we 'ad a battlewagon traded in for lotza teef to get some 'eavy boomsupport. It wuz nice and all, but da uvver orks dat built it had dozens just like 'em. It was plain and boring, but it 'elped me an da uvver Meks see how da mekanic stuff worked, and after some changes where we cut off some parts, addin' dem on uvver places and included some magnetz to make da important gubbinz changeable it wuzn't too bad. But when we discoverd we cud use da tanks left behind after incinerating da pinkskins inside and buy plates and scrap for way less teef dan da battlewagon my mind went crazy.
Tradin' for da tanks and dakka iz boring and expenziv and why wud we want to end up a toofless army wiv unima..gah trukks when we gotz all of uz Meks in da lot dat can turn any scrap into a flamespittin' fort? All we really need iz da mecanic parts and gubbinz from uvver vehiclez, traded or looted, da rest we cud make from da scrap.

What da uvver clans make I look on as inspirashun, and sometimes we want to get a hold of dem to see how dey work, but we usually and up picking dem apart in da end. And every think we make we make nice wiv glyphs and ornamentz and purty names, cuz fielding somefink not nize is.. not nice. Tradin' for dakka iz not natural for uz orks anyways...

I'll prolly post a picture of my clan when we have gathered everyone, but it will take ages as we are fitting all da boyz and vehicles with magnetz. All da waitin' makes da boyz antzy too, so I recun we be short of some orks and tanks due to boredom.

In answer to your question, Yes, there are people who feel that way.

You should know that when you show up with a scratchbuild/converted model you're going to get the whole gambit of responses from "hate it" to "man that's cool".
The cooler your model is and the better it is constructed (sure ork models are "orky" but is it made well?....) more of your responses will fall on the "that's cool" end of the spectrum. However even for really well done models, it seems that there will always be a few who see anything short of buying the specific GW model as "uncool", "not supporting GW" or otherwise undesirable.

As to your specific situation, not having seen your model, I can't comment on how I feel about your model. I'm a rule-of-cool guy generally erring on the side of "that's cool" but I reserve the right to think "man that looks like crap". Post a pic and I'll let you know.

I'll never play an army (myself) that is badly converted and I've banned the use of using proxies within my own ranks (unless heavily sustained by own written fluff and stuff to back up special rules (Like I'm now fielding Imotekh, but it's still iron Man who brings Thor along for the lightning and Captain America for hyperlogical strategy, I 'field' these as you would 'field' ammo runts.), but as far as my opponent wants to convert (good or messed up) or use proxies in his army is up to him and him alone, I'll compliment good conversions and awesome proxies. (sometimes old school models fill nice gaps!) But I will never complain if it's bad, or even tell my opponent it's bad, unless they ask my opinion and it's bad, I'll tell them it's bad ><.

For the emperor's sake, someone I know even uses an empty flyer base (just the base and the see trough thingie) to field a flyer (Most awful proxy ever!) But he has never heard me complain! (Even tough I'm in the firm belief you should have A model to represent at least something!)

Someone complained about an ork conversion? Dats wut we'z do best 'sidez krumpin' tings!

But in all seriousness, if its a really crappy conversion/scratch build technically he can complain especially tourny-wise. Do a good job, making it look downright awesome, if he/she still complains theyre an elitist jerk and a WAAC.

Total scratchbuilt i tend to be leery of because its so much cheaper and dodges the bullet many have to pay. However ive seensome scratchbuilds that were like O.O and were insanely good, so i didnt care lol.
Rule of cool.

Not going to lie, when i finish painting my Deffbrute and someone complains about that (Hellbrute conversion) thats definately an elitist arsehole because this thing is maybe half-painted and already grabbing the attention of my friends cuz its so cool (seriously need to stop putting it off and finish it lol)

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

To me that looks a bit weird, but thats just style of conversions preferences than anything else. But it is indeed all GW bitz and unless they state no conversions outside of your own race for a tourny, its totally legal. Only restrictions is size and GW bitz percentages.

Well personally I'd prefer that if a kit existed for the unit that a few bits from it were actually used. Mostly for recognition though, I don't care if you stretch 1 Deff Dreads parts into making 3 of them as long as they look good I guess the Rule of Cool is indeed in effect, even with Orkz as half-haphazardly welded/nailed together as the official kits look, just gluing on random plastic card doesn't make them instant win.

Of course I don't mind good conversions or even proxy armies in friendly games. I like to know what I'm shooting at without having the ask 6 times (I'm forgetful!) but as long as some effort is involved I don't mind much. Half the units in the game seem to lack models anyway. Just as long as it isn't something like you showing up with 3 papercraft Stormtalons, which I have seen. Cute for a friendly game, but otherwise just a cheap way to cheeze.
