PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts woman has sued FedEx, claiming the company mistakenly sent her a package containing seven pounds of marijuana, then gave her address to the intended recipients, who later showed up at her door.

Maryangela Tobin of Plymouth said in the suit filed Feb. 12 that by disclosing her address, the company violated state privacy laws and put herself and her children in danger.

"I feel like the safety of my daughters and myself was invaded and it makes things complicated," she told WBZ-TV. "I walk into my house first every time, my kids don't."

Tobin said she thought the package was a birthday present for her daughter, because when she opened it, she found candles, pixie sticks and peppermint. There was also something she thought was potpourri, but it was marijuana.

Tobin said that about an hour later, a man knocked on her door looking for the package, while two men sat in a vehicle in her driveway, waiting. She said she didn't have it, and bolted and slammed the door. Tobin claims FedEx gave out her address, which led the men to her home.

Police made an arrest, but Tobin said now she's worried about retribution.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Very...

They shouldn't reveal where they sent that package to... someone from FedEx shouldn've taken care of it.

Not sure if she has a case though.

How would you like it if they sent you weed and told the dealer it was supposed to go to where you live?

Do we know if Fedex actually gave out the address or did the dealers use her address as a proxy, hoping to keep it tracked and pick it up when it was delivered?

A little experience with this kind of thing eh?

Seriously though, I deal with FedEx for work and it wouldn't surprise me if they have these guys her address.

If she's the kind of person who mistakes weed for potpouri then I don't think it's unreasonable to think she is also one of those people who beleives all drug dealers are psychopathic maniacs who would kill her and her children for no other reason than for fun.

If she was that worried about retribution, she could have just given them the package instead of slamming and bolting the door.

Wow...and I thought USPS sucked donkey balls.

Hope those guys don't go back. If it can be proven that they gave her address to the men, and it wasn't a proxy address as suggested, she should win her case with ease. FedEx done fethed up.

In this messed up world, they would have been DEA agents and she'd be looking at 200 years for distribution

I doubt Fedex is really in trouble over this, because the way I see it, there are 2 possibilities:

1.) The actual drug fellows would never use a house connected to them for drug deliveries. That's just... bush league. They'd use a foreclosed house, or something like what happened in the story. So they didn't get the address from Fedex because they didn't need to.

OR

2.) The call center Fedex uses is subcontracted out to avoid liability for just this sort of event.

The title is obviously an exaggeration*, and the company as a whole is in no danger, but certainly this is bad PR, and I imagine at the very least they are going to be out of some money.

*I noticed the article before heading out the door and just tossed it on Dakka as I thought the readers would find it amusing. If I had put a little more time into it the title would have been a little less grandiose.

I think you should have made it more grandiose, because this is Dakka and this is how we do things. I'd go with one of the following:

FEDEX: THE END IS NIGH
Why Fedex Won't Exist Anymore
Fedex issues a death sentence to family
Fedex delivers a box of murder
Fedex assists drug cartels!!1!
Fedex delivers Marijuana, Republicans demand answers from Obama

Yeah, some local prosecutor probably would have charged her as an accessory or something. She was given a gakky situation, she reacted, and overall she probably handled it as best she could.

So it was to hard to I don't know, do something like "Oh we delivered this package to the wrong place, can we get it back off of you so we can deliver it to the right place? Sorry about this".

At the least if this was all by the guy who delivered it, someone's about to start looking for a new job.

I work at FedEx and FedEx people can be this stupid. Allow my to provide an example: There are people who run the place (lower management types) incapable of counting to 5. I know this because the guy in charge of stamping boxes with how many boxes are in the order is incapable of doing his job. I will get a package marked as "2" meaning there are 2 boxes in the order. 50 minutes later, I have 20 of them.

Now, compound that with it happen with a dozen orders. Welcome to hell.

The families about 60,000 people killed in Mexico by drug dealers would agree with her.

While I concede you have a point (that drug dealers in Mexico are very violent) I'm not sure we can conflate that all the way over to Massachusetts.

Oh, Chrome. I could never have spelled Massachusetts without you.

Well, according to the Department of Justice, criminals who used drugs also had higher violence rates then those without. Drug users, who were also dealers, correlated with higher rates of violence. Granted, I'm sure she wasn't picturing DOJ statistics when she made that call, but I doubt my reaction would have been differant. A ton of pot ends up at my house, and then people show up there looking for it, I'd be slamming the door in their face, grabbing my rifle (not shooting people, just getting it), and calling the cops.
