So, I'm going to be pairing up some Valhallan Ice Warrior IG with my SW. I figure mostly, I'll just do Cadians with an appropriate paint scheme and supplement with some actual Valhallan models. Of course, there are a lot of great 3rd party options out there for IG, but I'm concerned about using too many non-GW models. I don't intend to play at one of my local GW's very often, and I don't know of any games at the couple FLGS I know of. Still, I imagine there's still the possibility of someone not being cool with it. What do you all do? Do many IG players use a large proportion of non-GW models, none, or just a few or partials (for converisions) etc?

-Some are purists (like myself)
-Some use third party for conversions, kitbashes, details, and weapons
-Some peoples' models are mostly third party, maybe with GW arms or heads
-Some people don't own a single GW model and play 40k

All of these are fine, and outside GW stores, you shouldn't have any trouble.

To be truthful, anyone who refuses to play against you because you have some third party models is a-

Well, you probably wouldn't want to play a game against them anyways.

Good point. The only potential opponents I can think of, outside a GW, that may have an issue are my neighbors who work for GW. I don't know though, I don't really know them that well. Besides, that'd be a pretty ridiculous thing to base my purchases off of.

I've quickly come to accept the fact that this allied detachment will become its own army. I wonder if there's anyone for whom this didn't happen, lol.

You'd be surprised. Outside of work, they're not toting the company line, and probably don't give two gaks what you put on the table as long as it's not in a GW store.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'll most likely end up with a mix of GW and non-GW models depending on price.

Go to the stores you typically play at and ask them "hey, I'd like to use some non GW bits for my IG. They will still look like IG, and the third party bitz are being used to make my guys look like a discontinued GW IG line (this is how I convince people to see why I'm making older styled Cadians) They will be WYSIWYG. Would you be ok with playing against that?"

Then they'll give you an answer. As for the GW store, almost all have a 0 tolerance policy to 3rd party models (and the few that don't tend to not last long) Only bring GW minis or minis that you think will pass as one without the store owner being able to call you out on it (and I would only do that if I literally had no GW models on me that day for some weird reason)

TL;DR: Go to the stores and talk to the people you would tend to play against. Show them what you have in mind, and explain why you're passionate about the project. Make it WYSIWYG and most importantly, follow the rule of cool and have them painted. Nobody likes playing against unpainted minis, no matter how cool they are

That's a good idea. If I ever find a store to play at around here. Pretty sparse. Otherwise, the only non-gw I have is my Rune Priest. I guess at least it'd be MOSTLY GW. Maybe people in general, myself included, make too big a deal of this stuff. Via other conversations, it seems most people outside a GW store don't care at all.

Though I will admit to knowing one that thinks you're not allowed to play 40k at all with non-gw, AND if new versions of the models come out, the old GW is disallowed. I just shake my head.
