I'm in a bit of a spot here.

I'd like to add some Penitent Engines to my army, but the price and the model itself are both hideous imo. While the prince isn't a KILLER issue, I'm not willing to pay for that ugly of a model. So I'm relying on conversions, and honestly I'm stumped.

The best idea I've had so far is to cut open some Killa Kanz for the body of the Engine, but from there, I've got no idea. Any thoughts?

Sentinel parts will be your friend

And also Empire Flagellates

Unless you're going for the Female piloted ones.... (which seems to be getting to be more popular I think, did the fluff change or something? Or are they just conveniently female in the recent images of them)

Sentinels definitely have the right legs, that's for sure. But how do you deal with the arms? The frame provided by Sentinel legs I could see being kinda top-heavy looking.

As far as the pilots go, there's no rules or fluff precedent that I know of. It does mention that some Sisters are put into one, but not that it is exclusive to them. The pilot of the original model is the one part of the model I like, but that's more for the hooded look than anything else.

Kanz are too small imo. Get dreads.
Sentinel legs, dread body, dread arms and add some of its weapons into the blades.
Then file all the ork parks, cut open the front and you get the rest.

Hmm while it seems obvious to use ork arms, I dont exactly know how they'll look on imperium stuff without looking orky

While Penitent engines may look crude, they still have an air of "imperium-ness" imo which might look weird if its ork parts. Though then again as I said I've never really seen ork arms.

Do you happen to have a Kan/Dred model on hand? How is the "body" of it set up? Is it hollow and easy to cut the 'walls' of it open?

Sentinel plus Heavy Flamer side mount plus 3 or 4 Flagellants hanging off the side with Eviscerators or other CCW?

Yes, the dredd body is 'hollow' and would be pretty easy to cut to leave an open front - and if you're trying to match the look of the standard model, the 'pilot' is strapped to the front rather than inside anyway.

Certainly some work would be needed to stop it looking too much like a converted dredd, but wouldn't be too difficult, so long as you have a well-stocked bits box.

Using a sentinel would avoid the orky look, but doesn't come with any arms. The best option might be to buy a sentinel and a dredd then mix and match parts to make 2 pen engines?
