DENVER —
A United Nations-based drug agency urged the United States government on Tuesday to challenge the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in Colorado and Washington, saying the state laws violate international drug treaties.
The International Narcotics Control Board made its appeal in an annual drug report. It called on Washington, D.C., to act to "ensure full compliance with the international drug control treaties on its entire territory."
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said last week that he was in the last stages of reviewing the Colorado and Washington state laws. Holder said he was examining policy options and international implications of the issue. Marijuana is illegal under federal law.
The federal government could sue the states over legalization or decide not to mount a court challenge. Washington and Colorado became the first states to pass laws legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in last fall's elections.
"The entire international system is based on countries respecting the rules, and there's a broad fabric of international treaties that are part and parcel to that," said David Johnson, the U.S. delegate to the Vienna-based board.
The control board is the independent monitoring body for the implementation of United Nations drug control conventions. Its head, Raymond Yans, also called on Holder to challenge the laws soon after voters in both states approved them in November.
The director of the Open Society Foundations' Global Drug Policy Program, Kasia Malinowska-Sempruch, blamed repressive drug laws for millions of arrests and called on the United Nations General Assembly to reconsider its approach when it holds a special session on drugs in 2016.
The U.N. report also cited prescription drug abuse as a continuing problem as well as the emergence of so-called designer drugs that are engineered to fall out of the scope of existing drug controls.

What kind of treaty are we talking about? Does it mention weed specifically or is it like "any drugs which are illegal by national law", which is something we can get around pretty easily by legalizing it on the federal level.
It's in our best interest to follow the treaties we get into, even when they suck, just on principle since we demand that other nations do the same. Optimally we find some loophole that allows everyone go go home happy.

Amusing given we probably strong-armed for those drug treaties to begin with.
As we have a time honored tradition of scoffing at the UN, think this could actually increase the number of states legalizing pot?

Seattle police say they seized 40 to 45 marijuana plants from a public park over the weekend, but don't plan to investigate further because pot enforcement is a "low, low, low priority."
King County sheriff's deputies called Seattle police on Saturday morning to say they'd found the plants growing in a 9-acre park called Llandover Woods Greenspace, on the Shoreline border. The Seattle Police Department said in a blog post Monday that officers seized and destroyed the plants because they can't be cultivated publicly, and because "it's not that kind of greenspace."
The department says it's unusual for people to surreptitiously grow marijuana plants in public parks in Seattle, especially during the cold and rainy winters.
Washington voters legalized the possession of up to an ounce of marijuana last fall.
Feels good to have the appropriate amount of gaks given to weed.

Should have said flowers, not leaves, just nitpicking. You can't smoke leaves.
I only know this from personal anecdotes but the Federal Govt is indeed still going after pot growers in Washington. My friend in the Border Patrol sent me pics of some guys grow they busted the other day. Granted the guy put up pics of himself on FaceBook standing in front of his grow holding an AK so I feel no sympathy for him, but still has me worried about Holder's speech due soon. Anyone else think Obama is full of it on something else and is gonna reverse again and go after Washington and Colorado? I honestly don't know. I want to believe he won't, but I really don't know anymore.
Also I really have a problem respecting the opinion of a body that is so vehemently anti-pot yet still allows members in that practice female circumcision.

It's only like six months since the last time this happened. Did you see the thing where Republicans were refusing to ratify the UN treaty on the rights of the disabled. But Republicans freaked out and said the treaty threatened US sovereignty. It's non-binding, and doesn't call for anything the US didn't already have in place (it was based on the US law on treatment of the disabled).
I mean, a lot of people over here will just dismiss US politics as crazy and ridiculous, just laugh. I'll always say it's more complicated than that, but god damn, when it comes to the UN you guys are hilarious. Automatically Appended Next Post:

Because its not legal, mearly not criminal in the Netherlands. Big legal difference.
It is amazing how the US freak out over the UN. The international drug treaty was indeed a US backed law, pritty much pushed through by the US, and enforced by the US. The realy stupid thing is nothing is stopping the US from withdrwaing from the treaty, yet rather than suggest that people would rather freak out and post things like "keep out of our business".

When was the treaty last looked at? Is it something we've had going for decades or is it something that was recently (Recently being within the last five years) brought back up?

I only glanced at them, but it appears that the treaties are about preventing underground drug markets. If something is legal and regulated, those treaties don't seem to care about it.
It's more a problem because we've got this patchwork of rules about it where its illegal on the federal level, but several states are legalizing and not enforcing and the federal law enforcement is choosing not to care. That's the part that's running afoul of the treaties.
