Where can I find old second edition stuff for really really cheap, or possibly even free?
By "stuff" I mean anything from the books, to miniatures.
I definitely want the books for sure.
Ebay has pretty much turned up squat (mostly because idk what I'm looking for)
let me know.

Because in this hobby the newest and shiniest things are expensive, and the old dusty stuff is the cheap stuff that people use as ale coasters

Ebay *can* turn up some gems. For 2nd ed in particular, start with the 3 main books from the box set - that's the Rulebook, the Wargear book and Codex Imperialis. Then you'll want the Codex(es) relevant to your forces.
Miniatures wise, 2nd ed Marine models can be fairly easy to come by but a bit more expensive as some are more sought after. Other models, not so much. To get models cheap, go for poorly painted examples and strip them down (there are plenty of tutorials on this, but it boils down to - leave them in nail varnish remover or some similar chemical overnight then toothbrush 'em). You're in luck as a lot of older models are fully metal, which unlike plastic is nigh-on impossible to melt if you pick the wrong chemical.
(added) Try going specifically to ebay.co.uk as well. It can be a pain finding auctions that are ok with sending abroad and you'll have a heck of a wait on your purchases, but you'll find more here as Games Workshop wasn't as big in the States back then as it is now.

There are certain models that are STILL in use from 2nd edition - AND still sold by GW, too. Like certain SM character models, certain vehicle models, certain Eldar models.

If you think the "vintage" GW models are going to be cheap you're in for a rude surprise.
Look up OOP Metal Cadians on ebay sometime. Not the new ones with football armor, but the older ones with the roman legion esque armor.
They cost even more than buying a brand new space marine box straight from GW.

It's the RT stuff that's quite expensive, 2nd ed materials like books are mostly cheap. The figures vary, some of them are very sought after. Things like genestealer cults and IG praetorians are rather expensive.

Anyone know roughly how much rogue trader marines go for each?
I've found 6 of em at the bottom of a job lot, hiding under more coats of paint that I've ever seen on anything (although I've stripped that off)

I got 30 plastic RT Imperial Guard a few years back for $20.
I occasionally find good deals in the metals (I don't use ebay and prefer to browse the 2nd hand stalls at larger cons - I like to see the stuff up close) and plastics from RT and 2nd ed - but you really can't give away the 2nd ed box set stuff.

This one speaks the truth. The price depends entirely on what you're trying to get, which in turn is dictated by how usable and wanted the models still are.
To give you some examples. Metal Space Marine Dreadnoughts are still going for anywhere between £10-£30, not including terribad paint jobs or pro-painted. But they're still roughly the same size and valid in just about any Marine army.
The old metal Eldar Dreadnoughts and Chaos Dreadnoughts on the other hand are going for about £3-£4 each. That's because, while still a valid army choice, they're a good deal smaller than their current models (which are also objectively much better looking).
Sergeant Centurius - a *very* rare 2nd ed metal Legion of the Damned model - is going for £50 at the least, even assembled and painted. He has no rules now but he's hard to come by, looks damn cool and has nostalgia value for anyone who remembers when he first turned up.
I checked out multiple limited edition Games Day Chaos Fantasy models - Hero, Sorcerer, Champion - and the highest asking price was £15 for one still in its blister pack.
As I said before, one way of knocking the price down is to look for badly painted stuff deliberately and strip it later. Since I last posted, I got hold of a 2nd ed Hive Tyrant and Carnifex for £10 combined doing just that.

There is an incredible range in price for rogue trader metal marines on ebay. The common ones can often be found for sale in lots that end up selling for about 2-3 dollars per mini. Single figures that are stripped go for 5 to 7 dollars each if they are the common ones. You can expect to find chaplains for around 10 dollars each. Techmarines and librarians also are frequently available in the 8-10 range.
There are of course many listings of these same figures for really high prices. You can also expect to pay a premium for rare items like the old rhino riders and "dead marine".
There really is more supply than demand for a lot of the common metal rogue trader marines. I have been monitoring ebay prices on these for a couple of years. There are people who will pay very high prices if they are in blister packs though. It is amazing how many boxes of the old rtb01 marines still on the sprue turn up. They sell from 100 to 200 dollars pretty regularly.
For some of the very rare older imperial models you need to be really careful because more and more people are selling recast figures, even priming them to hide the fact they are recasts.

The metal eldar dreadnought isn't that much smaller than the wraithlord, though. Neither is its "spirit warrior" version from 1st edition. The tips of the banner poles bring it up to around the same height as the "wings" of the WL.
Chaos dreads, also aren't that much smaller - as they did tend to come with the longer legs (SM ones had two leg lengths, stumpy and longer legs). They did however, look more warped and chaosy than the metal box one circa 2nd ed.

I use both in my army - I built the base up slightly for my smaller wraithlords and put an extra gun on them. They still don't look as good, but they are acceptable for a game.
I want another 7 Wraithlords though. Then I can take a 'squad' of 10 in apoc...

Maybe, but I just don't understand why anyone would want rules for an edition now 4 editions out of date. When 3rd ed came out everyone in my area switched to it, and I hated it so much I stopped playing. I can understand why people might want some of the older minitures and those I didn't throw out (even the godaweful scouts from Tyranid Attack).

Some people want them because they actually still play the game. When 3rd ed came out, a lot of people didn't like the 'streamlining' and kept playing 2nd. Others have gone back to it later on. I know down here in Oz 2nd ed has had a bit of a revival recently... I think the release of 6th edition with its strong 2nd edition leanings reminded some players how much fun 2nd was.
Others just like to collect the old stuff for nostalgia value (because they had them way back when and got rid of them years ago) or for the sake of collecting, or just so they can see how the game has progressed.

I keep my old books. For example I still have my old Chaos codex (the Abbadon one with the mushroom cloud) because it has additional fluff on the traitor legions and awesome art like that page with the conversion sketches.
Of course I dont use the rules anymore but the art and fluff references keep it on my shelf. Where else can you read about Cypher these days?

People still play 2nd edition for the same reason people still play 3.5 D&D, or Pathfinder.
For me, 2nd edition reminds me of the fist days I found 40K, so there's a HUGE nostalgia factor, to be sure. And I only play friendly games, so I see zero instances of the "breaks" that people complain about from 2nd edition. I like a smaller game that focuses on the qualities of the troops and the characters that lead them, not masses of pawns, like the latest editions have become.
I find my layers of importance to be this: Setting>Models> Rules. Being able to do things like fielding Exodites in my Eldar army and 2nd Ed does that for me. I'm just bummed that I would have to construct rules for most of my Necrons if I wanted to play them in 2nd edition, as the only existed in a very, very limited fashion. Luckily even my SoB army can be used with 2nd edition.
Hell, I only play 4th edition games so I can use all my non-standard armies on the table, like Space Wolves 13th Company, or Kroot Mercs, or my Legion of the Damned army with it's Cursed Founding rules. If not for Chapter Approved, I might not play any sort of edition after 3rd, really.
