Can someone please tell me the rules on template weapons now please. I was told by a friend that template weapons now hit all the models under the template automatically. Is this true ?

Posting rules is frowned upon here at Dakka. You'll have to consult your own rulebook if you want the rules.

While I can't tell you the exact rules, I can tell you that what your friend said is false, the hits are still distributed as per the normal shooting rules.

Please consult the rulebook under Template weapons and under Blast weapons. Note that in GW game ruless, the “template” is the teardrop-shaped one. The 3” round one is a Blast marker, and the 5” round is a Large Blast marker.

HUH? That's not what the rules state.

Anyway, Warboss, go to page 52 in the rule book. Template Weapons. Second paragraph.

Yes it is. The friend MAY be suggesting that only the models under the template (or blast) can actually be hit/wounded/killed. Like in 3rd edition. Since 4th edition, templates and blast markers have been used to count the hits caused, but the casualties are not always the models under the marker/template. In 4th and 5th editions the guy controlling the wounded models chose. In 6th, it's the closest visible models to the firer. For example, if I hit a unit of 7 Paladins with a Vindicator and cause 6 wounds, but Draigo is standing at the front of the unit, he takes every wound first, rolling his 3+ invulnerable save (or using Look Out Sir before saving) until he's dead, and only once he's gone are hits apportioned to the next model behind him (or of course when he uses Look Out Sir).

Of course, the other old rule he may be thinking of is from 3rd and 4th editions, in which Blast and Large Blast markers only automatically hit a model if it's base was completely covered by the marker; any bases only partially covered would cause hits on a 4+. Starting in 5th edition Gw got rid of this, and now any models whose bases are even partially covered count as more hits automatically.

Anyway, Warboss, go to page 52 in the rule book. Template Weapons. Second paragraph.

I think he may also be confusing Templates and Blasts. In which case he also needs to refer to page 33.

I think that we're reading the OP a bit differently. He stated that he was told that models under the template are hit automaticaly. According to the rules, they are. (blast markers, too)
I've not seen anywhere in the rules that hits are distributed in any way, just tallied.
Wounds are distributed after the hits are tallied and to wound rolls are made.

He didn't mention wounds. He may have been confused and worded his question poorly. I took it at face value. After all, in previous editions, models partialy under the templates and markers had a roll to see if they were hit.
