Nope, he must take his assigned warlord trait, how ever un useful it is

But you can get around this by not using Sammael as your Warlord. I try and run a Librarian with Belial for my Deathwing force to sidestep the same issue.

Doesn't Belial have to be your warlord?

I'm away from my codex just now, but I don't think so. Pretty sure Azrael does, but not any of the other special characters.

Belial does not have a rule stating he must be your warlord, as far as I can tell only(in the DA codex) Azrael has a rule requiring him to be your warlord if you bring him.

Belial can only ever have The Hunt. However, as said above, unlike Azrael he does not have a rule saying he must be the Warlord. If you have another HQ with LD10 you can designate them as your Warlord instead.
