The question is pretty self-explainatory, but has 2 catagories: Player age as referring to actual age and game experiance in years.
Does it affect your desire to play a game with them?
I, personally, prefer the more experianced players myself, but if a new player is willing to learn, i'm more than willing to play small games.
So how do the other dakkanaughts feel?

I started playing in 2003.
I will happily play with any player, regardless of experience. I prefer people with a little experience under their belts, since they tend to provide a better game, but there are always exceptions.

Been playing 25+ years (since before RT)
Started with historicals and got into WHFB and 40K when they came around.
My criteria for whether i play yo has jack to do with your age, and a lot to do with your maturity level and attitude.
I've played ten year olds who've given me a more enjoyable game then 25 year olds with gak-poor WAAChole attitudes, whose only concern is whether or not you'll ruin the 'perfect' WLD rating they have from rolling newbies.
Don't get me wrong, i like to win, but i'd rather lose in an enjoyable (preferably tight fought) game with someone who's really having a good time than faceroll someone who is annoying to be playing opposite.

Does it affect my desire to play younger people.
Feth yes.
I'm over 40. I mean, even apart from the sheer creepiness factor of playing against young teens.
I'm older than their parents. We have nothing in common apart from the game. I don't like their music, their smack talk or their general inability to focus on playing the game for more than 30 seconds before they check their phone or wander off.
Now, if they can act maturely, lose WELL (as in no tantrums, no shouting, no throwing things, etc) then maybe I'll play them.
I've also had games against 35 year olds who were less mature than some of the 18 year olds in my club, though.
|
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

If i said age effects my desire to play i'd be a hypocrit. Im 14 and have been playing for about 3 years, but i wouldn't be playing for 3 years if no one played me would I?
I didn't throw tantrums, i didn't wander off and i knew my rules (as well as theres No, your Khorne CSM dont have an invul) since the start. I can say that some kids arn't as tacticaly minded or can get distracted, but i've never noticed it. Mainly i play people older then me (because, in general i can expect a better game) but i will play a new kid to teach them how to play.

I'll play anyone of any amount of play experience. I've only been playing for 8months and now most of the people that are 5 times or more my senior at this game ask me about certain situations that come up. I'm not a big fan of children though, I don't mind teenagers. I just want people to focus on the game when it's being played. I very much dislike a wondering opponent.

Yup, older then dirt here.
I don't mind playing younger kids. Part of being the "old guard" is teaching the new guys the ropes. Things like sportsmanship and manners, not just the rules of the game. Some of the behavior that's OK online is not OK in person. While not their dad, I can provide a good example of what is acceptable. And a lot of younger players are good gamers, just a little rough around the edges. But that's not their fault, they just need some experience to become great gamers.
I does get odd sometimes. You play against some weedy kid for a while, he turns out to be a cool guy, goes off to school. A few years pass and that "kid" still recognizes you (more or less the same, just a little less hair) but he's picked up a foot and a half of hight and did a stint in the marines.

I am 33. I have been interested in playing for 17 years now and have off and on over the years (usually money was an issue). I like to know my rules, play the game for the fun...
At our game club - we have a 10 and 13 year old. They may not be the BEST, but they are also the ones least likely to run cheese. They play what they like, know their rules, enjoy playing, and are the first to admit they screwed up.
Most of the games at our club ar between 25-40. Some are still engrained in 5th ed, 'forget' what their rules are, or try the little cheat methods, or loose poorly. When they lose, they pout, when they win, they glote.
Now, this is not an example of EVERY member of that age range - but when a guy complains the entire game about another person's army list, it makes the game boring (wasn't my list).
So basically, their age is a non-issue. I like to see how they play vs others before I play them. I may not be the best or have every rule memorized, but I don't play a WAAC game - I plan for TAC, pick a theme and run with it (currently a Slaneesh list, even if I have to 'play as' something else....and why does the God of Excess not give FNP? those whips HURT!), and play to learn and have fun. If the opponent only wants to win - i won't play them.
Oh - and on that - we have a guy, mid-20s I believe, who is by far the BEST gamer I have ever met - he is great at list building, plays what he enjoys, has fun, is tactically sound, and will encourage and help new players....A++ style in my book

Exactly.
When I walked in for a game in my FLGS for the first time, some older guys (I'm 15) just asked me and my mate what armies we played.
In those few words, we had a 2 v 2 game.
Life is good.

I'll play with anyone. Hell, I'd play against a 10 year old if he could reach the models! Age does not, at all, matter. Attitude, on the other hand, means all the world. If you're going to be disengaged, rude, or otherwise unseemly, I'm not going to want to play with you again. And, as I'm sure many of you can attest, there are plenty of "adults" out there who act far less mature when it comes to games than many teenagers that I've met.

I would prefer someone at least have basic knowledge of the game mechanics, but other than that, I don't care. Physical age doesn't matter too much to me either, maturity level does. I was very mature for my age when I was younger, as are my children. If someone is mature enough to play that's what matters.
I've learned a few things from younger players, and I remember when I was younger, my first trip into a GW with my Skaven Mordheim warband I ended up playing a man much older than myself. He was very helpful about letting me get the hang of things. I think it's important to create experiences like that for new and/or younger players to help them in the game, and come to love it. As well as help them feel comfortable going into a store to play (something I still have a bit of nervousness with).

I'll play anyone with an army and is capable of communicating at least once.
As to the poll, I started the hobby about ten years ago, but there's a rather large eight year gap in the middle where I didn't do anything Warhammer related.

I'll generally hesitate to play against children because they tend to be rather hyperactive and distractable. Plus, it's apparently creepy. On the other hand, I have enjoyed some games against younger players, so really it's all a matter of how much I'm playing the game and how much I'm actually just babysitting.

Age does not matter to me. As others have stated its about Maturity. Played some 16 olds that like the game and had a good match. Ive also played "that Guy" in his 40's that has played his army since it was made, that constantly complains about how much better his army USED to be.

I like playing against newer players due to their enthusiasm for the game, and older players who can show me some good tactics, and make for a challenge.
As for actual age, I'd say I prefer anyone who can act maturely (There are 12 year olds who can be quite nice people, and 20+ year olds who are utter douchebags).

I dont like to play kids, anyone under 16 basically and even then it's a push, most younger people I have known dont.have a grasp.on the rules and can't comprehend them.properly, never have proper armies, and these armies are rarely painted... Sounds like most adults I know too, difference is I.can.talk to them on the same wavelength rather than whatever Justin bieber is doing this week.. I dont like kids.. Can you tell haha

I wouldnt play against kids younger than 16 in a pick up game because it would look and feel kind of creepy. Now if they were friends of my son or something that eliminated the creepy aspect I wouldnt mind. In a tournament I dont mind playing against any age because it is a game arranged by a third party.

For me its more if they know the rules properly, and have an army (I dont mind if people forget their codex, I play almost all the armies in 40k, ill know if they're cheating) Really, the only time id turn down a game is if they're hyperactive and likely to get distracted or break models. Taking cheese isnt a problem, they always say "fight cheese with cheese"

No. Player maturity does. As shown by this thread, a lot of "older" people are also highly immature.
