The changes made in the recently released February 2013 FAQ included that the "Strength X" value would be replaced with "Strength 1" in the profiles of applicable Codex Space Marine units. This will apply to Sternguard Veterans universally!

How will this change the game? Why did they change it?

And does the poisoned (2+) still apply for wounding targets or will it be carried out differently during gameplay?

Poisoned will still work, but to units who are immune to poison, they will take a strength 1 hit, rather than no hit.

They would still wound on whatever the weapon description says. The strength value is for working out damage against vehicles. So if you shot at anything with an armour value, it would count as strength 1.

Furthermore, if you shot at a majority T1 unit, you would also get to re-roll to wound.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

S1 wounds T1 on a 4+, so no reroll.

Re-read the rules for Poison.

Technically that only applies in CC, as it makes no mention of that in the section on shooting attacks by poisoned weapons.

Is it? I'm away from books right now and thought that it said something like if the strength of the wielder (or weapon) was equal to or higher than enemy Toughness you could re-roll.

Just checked it - it's close combat only. Page 40. The rule is split between how it effects shooting weapons and close combat attacks, so the effects are quite clear. It says "weapon" so that there's no distinction between whether the close combat attack comes from the model or its wargear.

Ah. My bad. Apologies for the confusion (if any).

IIRC, it's only rerollable if the "to-wound" roll is that same with the users strength, as it is with the poison. So you'll commonly see S4 with 4+ Poison, getting a reroll versus <T5.
So against T1, you'd need S3 with 2+ Poison to get a reroll.

Re-read the rules for poison. Your take on it is wrong.

This isn't specifically directed at you, but I have noticed a trend on Dakka lately, to simply post: "Reread the rules."
Normally, I'd be more than happy to, but there are times that a rulebook isn't handy or available.

Would it kill people (again, not you specifically.) to explain the rule in a sentence or two, without bothering to post the entire section that they are referencing?
I'd like to be able to continue to engage in a discussion without waiting until a shift is over.

Well I got my rulebook right here...
it says...
"If the strength of the weilder (or the poisoned weapon) is the same or higher than the toughness of the victim, then weilder must re-roll failed rolls to wound in close combat."

So S1 (poisoned) would reroll against T1. Dont know of many T1 models that you can get into close combat with though...

I would like to point out (although it is irrelevant to the question) the change from Str X to Str 1 was made before January of last year. It has been Str 1 since 5th edition.

Yeah when I first saw the title I though it was going to be a question regarding the new range and wound allocation FAQ with the varying ranges of the special ammo.

This has been an errata for a millennia or more.

It has no impact on gameplay.
