Well I was painting a dark eldar venom last night and it was looking good. It was white overall with the blades and the center in screaming bell. I went to put a gloss white layer on it to really make it shine and decided to try out liquid mask. That was a really bad decision. Sprayed on the white and it was looking nice. Went to pull up the mask and everything came up all the way to the plastic. Primer and all. Any suggestions on what i did wrong? Now i have to clean the whole model off and start again. Fun times.

Well I recommend to allow about a day or so before doing stuff like that. Helps the paint cure, and properly bond with the plastic and primer.

What kind of liquid mask did you use? Was the paint under the mask fully cured and how long did you leave the mask on?

Did you clean the model properly before priming? When planning multi layer effects I always make sure the surfaces prepped properly (washed and lightly sanded).

did you cut the liquid mask with a hobby knife before pulling it up? You want to make sure to cut out the liquid mask by basically tracing the trim edges gently with your hobby knife. After you do that, you can take the knife and carefully peel back a corner of the mask and then pull it from there.

The model was cleaned and i went over it lightly with 800 grit sand paper.

Hmmm. I wonder if that was it. I just picked a corner and everything came up.

Yes....that is the step you missed. After painting over liquid mask....you simply cannot expect to pull it off unless you cut it out with a hobby knife. Everything else you did right. I just finished a few eldar models with canopys and mine came out great. After letting your paint dry completely....cut along the glass pane....as if you are stenciling it....make sure you connect your cut marks toghether and you cut out the piece of liquid mask you are removing in its entirety. That should take care of it

Well fart. I have the venom in the ICU brake fluid so I will start over tonight.

I have never had good success with liquid mask - perhaps I am just not doing it right - but I find that very careful application of painters tape works well.

Of course, it is not easy to use on complex surfaces.

I have seen a few tutorials on liquid mask, but am always looking for good advice from someone more successful than I.

this is a handy tip. I've not seen anyone do that in the few tutorial videos I've watched, so I'd have never thought to do that myself...

Also, I dont know if you apply your liquid mask with a brush...but that is a good idea to...gives you more control and you avoid the panes of the canopy pretty well

I did use a brush. I think i am just going to go back to the old tape. It worked and this really made me sad. But on the up side

Got it stripped pretty well and ready to start again.
