Finally a nut job that did things in the right older:
1) Shoot self in head,
2) Kill everyone for no reason.
Also, what, exactly, is a ".22 caliber tactical rifle"?

I've seen 5.56 nato rounds called .22 caliber before (5.56 mm roughly comes out to .223 caliber), so it could be an AR-15 (I'm going to assume these are chambered the same as M-16s?) or something (like a cheap M-16 knockoff). Maybe the reporter thought that was the most dramatic way to phrase it.

Usually 5.56mm is referred to as ".223" though.

".22" is generally used for .22LR which is usually a target pistol round (and rimfire).

And yes, an AR-15 is chambered the same as an M-16. The AR is the civilian (and often just semi-automatic - one shot per trigger pull) version.

Comes down to a journo not knowing his elbow from his posterior sphincter when it comes to ammo.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Well, if journalists are now calling 9mm MP5SD submachine guns a .22 tactical rifle, why not...ah, this reminds me of this old picture...

That looks like a clone of a HK MP5SD. If it is indeed chambered in 22LR, then I think it was accurately described as a "22 caliber tactical", although I guess it's not really a rifle per se.

Aye, I thought of that, too, just after posting. I guess there are .22 variants of this...

Well, that doesn't make the image you posted less accurate in general.

It could also be a little .22LR with some black plastic on it.

If only they knew how to work Google It sounds more like the journalist was trying to sensationalise the story to tie it in with other shootings.

Sounds like he was trying an ambush and screwed it up. Once again, a BG if threatened is easily thwarted and usualy ends up eating a bullet.

There are a couple companies (like Colt/Umarex) that make .22lr versions of 'tacticool' weapons like this one. They are a ton cheaper to own and fire than the full caliber veriosns, and cannot really be converted. I have the Colt/Umarex M4-ops and love it.

Here is one of the available HKs: http://www.hk22rimfire.com/index.php?page=mp5-sd

Here is the one I have: http://www.colt22rimfire.com/index.php?page=colt-m4-ops

If you mean the Feinstein ban, I am pretty sure it would. The magazines would for sure. The gun itself has more than the one needed 'Assault Weapon' feature.

All semiautomatic rifles that can accept a detachable magazine and have at least one military feature: pistol grip; forward grip; folding, telescoping, or detachable stock; grenade launcher or rocket launcher; barrel shroud; or threaded barrel.

All semiautomatic pistols that can accept a detachable magazine and have at least one military feature: threaded barrel; second pistol grip; barrel shroud; capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip; or semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm.

from the Senator's website: http://www.feinstein.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/assault-weapons specifically here: http://www.feinstein.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/assault-weapons-ban-summary

I did a very quick search of the text of the bill and did not see it listed as an exception (allowed to own) so I do think this would have been illegal to buy once the bill became law.

I think this is the big deal personally, over the tarted up .22lr rifle. What is up with these disturbed young men and learning how to make bombs? It's not like improvising explosive devices is common knowledge.

Heck, when I was a kid you could buy published/pro-printed copies of the Anarchist Cookbook. I suspect if you don't mind setting off warning buzzers in the offices of Those Who Watch that online there are plenty of resources, and for the old school, libraries are gonna have plenty of useful books.... So, maybe not common knowledge, but it is easily obtained knowledge.

For the record, you can still get the Anarchist's Cookbook in most book stores, you might have to order it though. However, some of my buddies in EOD got a hold of a copy... their general conclusion is the book is a great guide to having a serious accident. Not actually causing havoc/mayhem. The book's recipes for gunpowder drew particular ire as I recall...

Edit: And I seem to recall the explosives the Aurora shooter had rigged up were like nothing the EOD team had seen before and it took them a couple days to disarm, that doesn't sound like the simple stuff to me.

You can get the Engineer Field Data book (FM 5-34 I think) if you look around. Again, the info is out there. Heck, Al Quada, in their english language publication 'Inspire' has some info that is a very good starting point.

A mate of mine who taught Dem in the Australian Army (he was a sapper) had a copy of the AC. He had gone through it with a red pencil and corrected it though (he can't stand sloppy work - and nobody ever hears a sloppy demo guy more than once).

That and "the poor man's James Bond". Two books guaranteed to reduce the gene pool - or at least horribly maim the people who read it with next to no actual knowledge of the processes involved.

I've heard that the AC has changed a lot over time. It would be interesting to see how a copy from the '80s compares to current.

I always thought the AC was a plant by the FBI or some such organization myself, if you buy it you go on a watch list, and if you use it, you're already preventing yourself from doing anything... usually by unintentional suicide.

A slightly above basic knowledge of chemistry can allow you to make explosives/poisonous gas bombs out of a bunch of easily aquired materials. Specifically cleaning agents and pool supplies.

Its not all that hard to make explosives. Making stable explosives without hurting yourself is the tricky part. But then an individual making homemade bombs probably isn't super concerned about that.

It would just be easier to make a bunch of Molotov cocktails, but hey, nobody ever claimed these nutters were thinking rationally.

Maybe not a deliberate plant, but probably a convenient piece of literature to monitor.

In the context of the media's reporting on firearms, reporting a .223 calibre round as .22 calibre is close to Pulitzer stuff.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. A. 22 caliber tactical rifle is a scary looking. 22. No one in the history of the world has ever referred to a Bushmaster or any other AR-15 clone as a .22 caliber rifle. ever.
