hay forum this is my first time on off-topic so i will ask a question that everybody will have an opinion of.

What is the best national anthem in the world

I have 2 rules

1. No going for your own country because you live their

2. Keep the debate civilised.

Apart from that Poll away.

No England?

Out of the choices available, I guess the USSR was the most uplifting.

Because most people would automatically vote for their own without consideration that it may not actually be any good?

The British national anthem is a bit dreary and as much as I hate to say it, the French anthem is much more lively and surprisingly violent

Ireland's national anthem of course!

Any national anthem that comes out of a country formed by violent revolution is always awesome. France's national anthem in particular is... surprisingly bloody actually.

and for a national anthem duel thread, the duel of anthems scene from Casablance seems appropriate:

Fun fact, the German national anthem wasn't used in the film (they substituted Der Wacht Am Rhein a WW1 marching song) because they would have had to pay royalties to the German government... in 1941.

Mine is frankly gak.

It is a ropey folk song from the 60s though so thats not that suprising.

The older one is much better

I don't generally like national anthems but the USSR's is/was pretty good.

This is correct, i don't not want people voting for there country because they live their, but i do want a thought process rather than just for the sake of being a "patriot" to one's country.

I know that, as does every schoolchild - I realized this when I was listening to God save the Queen, which I had never heard before. For a song I'd never before heard, it sounded.... awfully familiar

With my parent's experiences during The Troubles neither of them wanted anything in the house that might be taken the wrong way (especially when it was common for them growing up to be arrested on suspicion of being Irish)

Australians wouldn't. Our anthem sucks. Dreary, outdated song that's incredibly difficult to sing in key.

Really? I happen to think "Waltzing Matilda" is a great song.

/trollface

In all seriousness, I can't recall any national anthems other than the USA's, Canada's, and UK's off the top of my head so I'm going to have to go listen to the other ones.

Not that it stops anyone. Although finding people who know more than the first part is hard. I don't remember when it changed, but I can recall having to sing "god save the queen" at school as a young'un.

@Ratot: ... and the alternative is about a sheep-thief who kills himself rather than face the music.

Can't say that I like ANY of the options presented, though. Gotta admit the Roseanne Barr version of the US anthem was amusing. Purely for the bile and hate levelled at it.

I only know the second verse because we had to learn it when I joined the army...

Although it turns out there are a couple of other verses floating around that most people have never heard of... We got a shock at the first school function for my wife's little brothers, as they were at a Christian school that uses one of the 'alternate' verses. So halfway through the anthem it cuts into this verse that we had never heard before, and all of the parents carried on singing it as if this was perfectly normal. It was like slipping into some weird alternate dimension...

1984. Although the first couple of schools I went to weren't big on singing the anthem, so I never actually learnt God Save The Queen until well after it was no longer the anthem...

My great grandparents and granpa were forced from Ireland as things started ramping up towards '16, settled in a Irish neighborhood in New York, Great Grandpa went back to Europe with the US Marines for WW1, Granpa went to the Pacific for WW2, otherwise, same Irish neighborhood in New York with all the rest of the FOBs.

My wife's grandfather moved to the US from Germany as a child and ended up in WW2 in the US army, must have been fun knowing that if he was captured the Germans would have tried him as a traitor

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

The sad part is during the Olympics, when a Kazak althlete won a medal in one of the competitions they played that instead of the real Anthem. The Kazak government was none too pleased.

Well, I don't know that he needed to include all of them, but at least the big ones, like the G-8 - especially when there was room for a country that doesn't exist anymore.
