Hello dakka. I have a question about squad leaders. Can they have options of squad members. or they compel to take only "...Noise Marine Champion can take blah-blah-blah..."?
This all takes my attention when i realise that Noise Marines Champion can't take even normal close combat weapon, but only Melee Weapons and Ranged Weapons from this sections of wargear of CSM codex plus some options like Doom Syren and Melta bombs. What do you say?

Squad leaders come with the basic kit of their unit e.g. a chaos marine aspiring champion has bolter, bolt pistol, combat weapon and grenades.

He then chooses to swap his guns or his combat weapon for weapons from his wargear list e.g. combi weapons, plasma pistol or power weapons/fists. He can also choose to buy extra options like melta bombs.

They do not have access to the squads weapon options though so you can't take an aspiring champion with a lascannon for example. The only exception to this I am aware of is marks of chaos as the whole unit has that.

Hope this helps!

This post should probably be in YMDC not proposed rules though.

Thank for your help, rohansoldier. I was in agreement with myself and you till morning, when i read this:
BRB page 63 Characters
"...Most characters are fielded in units from the start of the game,
and represent squad leaders, such as a Space Marine Veteran
Sergeant. They have their own profile, but do not have a
separate entry. They are effectively just another trooper in
their unit, with enhanced characteristics and perhaps a wider
selection of weapons and wargear choices..."
Didn't it mean that i CAN take weapons options of squad, becose "...They (characters as squad leaders) have their own profile, but do not have a
separate entry..." and "...They are effectively just another trooper in their unit, with enhanced characteristics and perhaps a wider selection of weapons and wargear choices..."

"perhaps a wider selection of weapons and wargear choices..." represents things that most squad members don't have already like power weapons, plasma pistols, gift of mutation, and other stuff. It doesn't mean they always have stuff the soldiers have, nor does it mean they always have access to special equipment.

It all depends on the wording. The unit leader is given a different name in his profile. This helps determine what he can and cannot take, and what the other members of the unit can and cannot take.

In the case of Noise Marines, there are between four and nineteen "Noise Marines", and a single "Noise Champion". According to the army list entry...

"Any Noise Marine may take..." - these items only the "Noise Marines" may be given - not the "Noise Champion".

"The Noise Champion may take..." - these items only the "Noise Champion" may be given - not the "Noise Marines".

"One model in the unit may take..." - these items either "Noise Marines" or the "Noise Champion" may take.

"The unit may take..." - if this option is selected, it applies to the whole unit - both "Noise Marines" and the "Noise Champion".

It's a one way street man, the character can go down the road of wargear but can't go backward on it and take squad equipment.

For instance in my DA codex the squad consists of 1 Space Marine Serg and 4 Space Marines. It is explicitly clear to go on THE SERGEANT (or vet. serg) can select wargear from the list blah blah which does NOT have an entry for "lascannon" or "Wrist Mounted Land Raider Crusader". It then goes on to say "Any SPACE MARINE can take a blah from the list". My Sergeant is not a lowly Space Marine he is a Space Marine Serg, so he gets to walk into the quartermaster's office and pimp slap him for special wargear, not the standard issue crap given to Bobby Bolter Marine.

This issue seems to be cropping up a lot recently and I don't know why, your codex tells you what model can have what (well, lets not mention the obscurities in the command squad section of the DA codex) and despite that really poorly written exert in the big rule book your codex trumps it. The only reason why characters were introduced was for duelling, I am of 2 minds for it, I like the idea but on a tabletop game like this it takes up too much time and lets face it, this is not cinema and we don't really want the cinematic duels... really, on a battlefield with rockets and lasers scudding overheat and armoured tanks bearing down ... ok back on topic sorry.

No your champion can not take a lascannon for +20 points
