They do not have access to the squads weapon options though so you can't take an aspiring champion with a lascannon for example. The only exception to this I am aware of is marks of chaos as the whole unit has that.

Didn't it mean that i CAN take weapons options of squad, becose "...They (characters as squad leaders) have their own profile, but do not have a
separate entry..." and "...They are effectively just
another trooper in their unit, with enhanced characteristics and
perhaps a wider selection of weapons and wargear choices..."
