im supposed to be playing this guy who plays tyranid tomorrow and he uses 3 tyranfexis...I was looking at their weapons and it has a gun thats str 10 ap 4.....and has a 48" range? Plus the fact that it has a +2 save and 6 wounds...um...how the hell you supposed to fight something like that?
I play chaos marines...it seems most armies the stronger the weapon the shorter the range...but not in this case

Laugh at him, tyranofexs are terrible, he is paying 795 for units that cannot effectively kill marines, they will kill dreads and land raiders and other vehicles, but everything else will mess them up

Honestly, Tyrannofeci are some of the most overcosted models in an army that has alot of expensive stuff. Yes, the gun is strong, but at Ap4 it is only blowing up your tanks on a 6. It's also 2 shots on a Bs3 model, meaning that it's only averaging one hit. Its got a 2+ save a 6 wounds, but few attacks and a mediocre Ws. For all of that, each one costs as much as a Land Raider and Rhino, so he's dropping ~800 pts on those three guys, which also preclude him from taking trygons/carnifex, which are much more dangerous to your marines.
If your worried about killing them use any of these to take em down
Obliterators (a squad of 3 is much cheaper than even 1, and can use their other weapons for horde duty)
Deep striking terminators with plasma (can take ~8 for the cost of one of his big gribbles)
Daemon Prince with Daemon weapon/wings (still cheaper and can drop 1 each turn in close combat)

that gun also has special rules on non open topped vehicles if I remember. so its not as great as it sounds. even without deepstriking, even running a larger unit at it will probably get to it before it kills off your group at only 2 shots a turn, that really limits it.

Yeah, the Str10 gun sounds cool but its a minimum of 265 points to field. Treat it like a terminator squad and lascannon/plasma/melta it down.

You're thinking of Venom Cannons (both types).

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Jaws of The World Wolf and he is dead. Haha works everytime. But really, I have found for Lascannons to work well, along with maybe heavy flamers and definitely power weapons, those will tear through it.
I agree though, they are rather overcosted, and only good with particular army lists.

I find it kind of funny how much guard players love their S10 Ap4 manticores, while tyranid players loathe their tyrannofexes with the same kind of gun...
As for what to do about it, you've still got staple CSM things like combicide terminators and obliterators. Also, you know that part where all of your marines come with free krak grenades? Guess what you can use against monstrous creatures now...

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Properly supported, three Tyrannofexes can and will advance forwards and just push everything out of their way. They make an incredible anvil. Don't underestimate them, or more accurately don't underestimate their ability to sit there and not die.

Yes, because a large blast weapon with D3 hits is the same gun as a two shot weapon with BS3, for 100 more points.

Probably because the tyranid version costs double the points, isn't a large blast, isn't a barrage and doesn't hit D3 times. Edit: ninja'd

Just take a hoard of guys, shoot any small beasties with bolters and then take objectives while firing some sort of anti tank against the fexes. Cower in fear when up to 6 marines die a turn ( on a seriously bad roll for you, more like 1 a turn)

serious theyre that expesive? Nowonder why the local nids player has NEVER fielded those lol.
I woudnt even consider those in a joke army. If it was a small blast, ok thats not THAT bad but still blows, but its a single shot. Just dont take armor spams or multi-wound models w/o a 2+ save and they really wont do much the whole game.
Why on earth would you use those....horrible guns....

It's two shots.
In 5th they were potentially viable because of all the armor that had to be cracked - but even then 5 Hive Guard are cheaper and do a better job, so unless you were maxed out at 9 Hive Guard and had 300 points laying around...
In 6th the Ruoture Cannon is basically worthless. Any opponent who builds a Rupture Cannon Tyrannofex should be thanked.

As rigeld said, they may have had a place in 5th, but not anymore.
I dropped my 2 and added in 2 tervigons and 3 more hive guard for 6th.
Even with 3 in his army, you wont really notice shooting from them as its that minor and ineffective most of the time.
If you really want to kill them though, leave oblitz to blast away at them for a few turns.
Unless theres an actual threat to shoot at instead.

Let's see, 800 points for six shots a turn at BS3 (so avg 3 hits) that can't puncture the armor on your non-cultist infantry? I know I'm terrified. Even if you're running a vehicle-heavy list they're unlikely to get any kills from pens since the gun's AP4.

Paying nearly 300 points for two shots?
I don't like paying 250 for five twin-linked shots with 14 armour and 10 troop capacity. Much rather pay a third of that for eight with armour 13.

Plasma is your friend in this case. Consider a 6 man chosen squad with plasmas in a rhino. Zoom up to him first turn, hop out (or if it's wrecked, shuffle around a bit) turn two and give him both barrels. 10 plasma shots will pretty much make mince of one of these guys for ~220 points. Take Abaddon and now they're scoring MC hunters.

Well ti depends, I thought it had three shooting weapons and was more of a midfield unit rather then standing back and shooty.

IIRC the ap1 bonus wasn't existent in 4th edition. Although whether that's relevant to tyrannofexes I have no idea.

I stand corrected. Still, ap4 had a 33% chance of destroying a vehicle then on a pen, whereas now it has only a 17% chance. It was significantly better at its job then, although I suppose with enough of them now you could glance most vehicles to death pretty quickly. You're just paying a huge premium to do so.

Really it's only use is to fire 3 weapons on a 2+ 6w 6t model.
Treat it like a squad of terminators and it'll die just as easy - easier since there's no invul.
